Welcome to Birthday week as we celebrate Founders’ Day 2007. There are many activities planned to celebrate the
School’s birthday in the coming days and I would encourage all members of the School Family to attend those functions where
possible. Our Founders’ Day Service and Concert will be held in the School Chapel commencing at 9:15am on Friday and I
would ask that all attendees be seated by 9.05am. The SATU Passing Out Parade will take place after the service and the
Reviewing Officer this year will be Capt. Mark Wilson RAE, Adj. UNSWR. This will be followed by various activities in each of
the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools. In the evening, we come together for the Founders’ Day Dinner for fine food, fellowship
and wonderful music supplied by members of Brass RaZoo.
The SATU Dining-In Night takes place on Saturday evening in Horbury Hunt Hall. Year 12 are the guests at this annual event
for SATU members which is hosted by Year 11, with Year 10 assisting with serving.
Also this weekend, the School will be hosting the Dean’s Conference which means that all the Anglican Cathedral Deans will be
coming to Newcastle over Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Part of their conference will be held at the School.
During the last week I had the privilege of being with Year 11 at their Camp and I want to congratulate all of them on their
demeanour, friendliness and cooperation. I would like to thank Fr. Brian for organising the camp and also to the following staff
for their attendance and organisation; Mr Filby, Mr Potter, Mrs Robertson, Mr Hopson, Mr Brain and Mrs Martin.
The postponed Junior School Athletics Carnival was held on a beautiful sunny day this week and I would like to thank Miss
Byrnes, the Junior School Staff and Students for their contribution to a most enjoyable and happy occasion.
Congratulations to the Under 16 soccer team who were successful in winning the Hunter Region Independent Schools’ Gala
Day. A particular thank you to their coach Miss Parezanovic.
Mr A G Green
Gspn!uif!Tdippm!Dibqmbjo!
Year 11 went away during Week 1 of the term for their Senior Camp. They travelled to Myall Shores Ecotourism Resort on
Wallis Lake and spent the two and half days exploring leadership and just having some fun. The purpose of the camp is to give
these Year 11 students the chance to consider their emerging role of leadership in the School. Activities included a Eucharist
and meditation, a talk on leadership given by the Headmaster, group activities (including the very popular Latin dancing
sessions), games, archery and a walk through the sand hills and rainforest. A very successful trivia night was organised by the
trivia master extraordinaire, Mr Brain, who keep everyone amused and happy for hours of fun.
I would like to thank all the staff who attended and made such a huge contribution to the success of the camp. Special thanks
to the Headmaster, Mr Filby, Mr Potter, Mrs Robertson, Mrs Martin, Mr Hopson and Mr Brain.
Year 11 were exemplary ambassadors for the School and I received many compliments about their behaviour and demeanour.
It was fun and relaxing to be away with them. The evaluation forms showed that the students enjoyed themselves and many
positive comments were made about the experience and the activities.
Congratulations Year 11 on such a useful group experience.
SPRING FAIR – RAFFLE DONATIONS NEEDED URGENTLY
The Spring Fair is the main fund-raising event organised by the Spring Fair Committee and the money
raised is used to improve facilities and purchase equipment for the students.
The Raffle has always been a big part of the Fair and in the past parents and friends have very
generously made donations of all kinds to be raffled. These have included electrical goods, jewellery,
artworks, gift vouchers, theatre tickets, food orders, dinners, 3-day holidays, wines, horticultural supplies,
taxi vouchers, car services, horse riding lessons and skiing and diving goods to name a few.
Many of these parents and friends have donated year after year, which has been greatly appreciated. If
you are in that category and would like to donate again this year; or if you are new parents or other
parents who feel you would like to contribute, please contact me.
Miss Wotton - wotj@ngs.nsw.edu.au or phone: 4929 5811
As this needs to be finalised very soon, any donations need to be with me by 13 August 2007.
“Be a Gene-ius” and help support the Children’s Medical
Research Institute in 2007
Hunter House will once again be supporting Jeans for Genes Day a FUNdraising day for the Children’s Medical Research
Institute.
On Friday, 3 August, students on the Hill Campus will be encouraged to change into their jeans at lunchtime and donate $2 for
the privilege. Last year nation wide, over $4.1 million was raised, with Schools responsible for a huge amount of the total.
Hunter House managed to collect over $1000 and we would like to at least equal that amount in 2007. So, let’s continue to
show our support for this worthy cause by getting into the spirit of the day and bringing along our jeans and a $2 coin.
SENIOR BIOLOGY STUDENTS
There is an Open Day at the Museum of Human Disease at UNSW on Saturday, 18 August 2007.
This is in the middle of the Trial Exams but there may be some students who will be in Sydney on that weekend and who would
like to attend. It would allow students to view specimens and resources, which would supplement their work in the
Disease Unit that we do study.
The day is free and runs from 10:00am - 4:00pm. As large crowds are attracted to this Open Day
it is suggested that visitors register their attendance to avoid queuing.
FROM THE ACTING HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL
This Friday we celebrate Founders' Day. All Middle School families should have received a note outlining the activities students
will take part in. In summary, the day begins with a Church Service in Christchurch Cathedral followed by a short concert. After
recess, students watch or take part in the Years 6, 7 and 8 debating finals. After lunch, all Middle School students attend a
sporting afternoon on Newcastle's Foreshore. Students are returned to School before the end of the School day. Parents are
invited to attend any part or all of the day’s festivities.
The Middle School Showcase is fast approaching. The idea behind Showcase is to give students the opportunity to show-off or
'showcase' their work. Showcase is being held on Tuesday, 21 August beginning at 3:30pm and concluding at 7:00pm.
Originally, it was to be held in SWPC but due to the storm damage to Park Campus, Showcase is now being held on the Hill
Campus in and around the Middle School classrooms.
All Middle School students are involved in Showcase. A note will be mailed home in the next week or so outlining all the
specific details but in short there will be performances from the Middle School Strings, Middle School Wind Band,
Grammarphones and Middle C's. Our Year 6 classes will perform dances taught in PE and our Years 7 and 8 students will
perform pieces taught in Drama. The Tournament of Minds group will perform, as will some of our Aerobics teams. Selected
individuals or groups from Speech and Drama will also perform. In addition to all these performances, students work will be on
display so you can wander through the School and see what your child has been doing at School. There will also be items of
food and drink available for purchase with funds raised going to ’The World Vision School Support Project’ in Tanzania Africa.
The HRIS Primary Schools' Athletics Carnival is being held next Tuesday. We wish all students selected to represent our
School the very best. Whilst on Athletics, the date for the CIS Primary Schools' Athletics Carnival has been changed. It is now
being held on Tuesday, 18 September, which clashes with our Years 5 and 6 trip to Canberra. If any of our Years 5 and 6
students are selected to represent at this carnival we shall ring parents and make arrangements to accommodate the students
as best as possible.
Last week our Assembly was led by Anne Seah and Tristan Barrie from 8AP. Thank you Anne and Tristan. Congratulations to
students from 7HP, Sarah Walsh and Lucy Clifton who read at Chapel, and Courtney Wholohan, Damon Proulx, Laura Nesbitt
This Saturday our senior cadets will be conducting a Dining-In Night in the Horbury Hunt Hall. This is an opportunity for our
Year 12 cadets and their parents, along with Year 11 cadets and guests, to experience a traditional military dinner. Year 10
members of the SATU will also be helping as servers for the night.
PROPOSED TOUR TO FRANCE and ITALY IN 2008
Villers-Bretonneux Pompeii
NGS has been invited to attend the first official Australian Anzac Day Dawn Ceremony to be held in France, on Anzac Day,
2008. Our SATU students have the opportunity to be a part of the official ceremony, wearing genuine WWI uniforms. This
invitation has inspired us to organise a sixteen-day tour, which involves extensive touring of the Western Front regions in both
France and Belgium, in particular Fromelles and Bullecourt and Ypres. Added to this will be a stay in Paris and time to explore
Pompeii and Herculaneum in Italy.
This tour is designed to fit not only SATU students, but also students of senior Modern and Ancient History, as these areas are
central to their studies. However, there are no restrictions. Anyone who is interested in these historical places is welcome to
come. This may include families.
The tour will cost just under $6,000 per person and will run in the school holidays next April.
So, how are you going to celebrate Anzac Day 2008?
At this stage, we are seeking expressions of interest. If you are interested, please talk to Mr Barter or Mrs Grace. Future
planning rests on this expression of interest. We are hoping to have an Information Evening soon.
UPCOMING CIS SPORT NOMINATIONS
CIS has a large number of sports, which they convene to enable students from NSW Independent schools to access
representative channels. The due dates for nominations to attend trials for these sports are published well in advance and are
posted on the Sports noticeboards in both the Middle School (near storeroom) and Senior School (Merrick quad.). Students are
reminded to ensure they read that information regularly if they wish to nominate for trials in their particular sport. Nominations
must come through the Sports Department. Any questions regarding these trials should be referred to Mr Carroll (Years 7-12) or
Mrs Rowntree and Miss Byrnes (Years 3-6). Late nominations will not be accepted by CIS.
The team comprises Sam Rayment, Sam Dart, Michael Weeks, Sam Webb, Liam Speers, Tim Grunsell, Bowen Potter, Dominic
Game 1 = 1 - 1 draw against Lakes Anglican Grammar School (goal by Alex Butters)
Game 2 = 3 - 1 win against St Philip's Waratah goals by Simon Megalos = 2, Charles Shillington = 1)
Grand Final - met Macquarie College again in a tight and even encounter until a goal scored by Sam Burt in the 9th minute of
the 2nd half.
Leading goal scorer from Newcastle Grammar was Simon Megalos (plays with Hamilton Olympic) with five for the tournament
followed by Sam Burt (plays with Merewether Juniors) with four. Matt Barter (midfielder and captain who kept the boys unified
and did not stop running all seven games - only sat off for one half) rep player with Macquarie.
Other players on the team were:-
Mathius Halliday = sweeper who did not let anything get past him.
Zac Bush
Willem Evers = unstoppable stopper
Lachlan Stronach
Daniel Scotton = solid defender and keeper for a few halves
William Blanch = strong defender
10
All the boys played with heart and as a team. Before the day began, the team discussed why the Socceroos lost and they were
adamant that they would focus on playing as a team, which they did throughout all 7 games. I was very proud of their efforts on
and off the park. They are by far the best team that I have ever coached. Ms S Parazenovic – Manager
TENNIS
The 2007 Tennis competition has begun with most teams based at District Park. Division 5 will play all games at National Park
Tennis Courts until further notice due to the extensive storm damage at District Park. Unfortunately, as a result of this damage,
there are not enough courts available for a Sunday Beginner's group competition this year. We will be organising a competition
for this group later in the term during the Thursday co-curricular time slot. There is some emerging talent in this group and we
look forward to following the progress of these enthusiastic participants.
A reminder that if you are unable to meet your commitment on any Sunday, you must contact Nathan Cook before that day so
that he can organise a replacement for you.
ROWING
From The Director of Rowing
South-Queensland Championship yields NGS a platform for early success in this new season!
With a band of only six rowers, NGS impressed many large school contingents at the Hinze Dam on the Gold Coast last
weekend. The regatta fields were large with as many as 32 single scullers and 28 double sculls – leading to the necessity of
heats, semi-finals and then finals. Despite this, NGS scullers made the finals in every event they entered. At this Schools
Championship, Newcastle Grammar notched up three gold and two silver medals – an outstanding result for our first regatta of
the season!
It was truly exciting to see Matthew Filmer and Brandon Brown fight out the final of the under 15 single scull – finishing first and
second – wow!
Mathew and Brandon combined to crush the opposition in the Year 9 Double Scull winning by more than six lengths. Other
school coaches were heard to say to their crews not to bother trying to beat Newcastle Grammar but rather save their energy for
the contest for silver and bronze – that turned out to be good advice!
Matthew Filmer and Christian Moore both equited themselves well in a very strong under 16 single scull final – finishing sixth
and seventh.
James Shafren proved equal to the task in the Under 17 Sculls Final where in a top field and despite having already had five
races, finished strongly in fifth place.
James and Riley Lewis were unstoppable in the final of the Year 10 Double Scull where they dominated – leading from start to
finish! They also combined bravely and raced into the final of the year 11 Double Sculls – here not outclassed despite the age
difference – they finished fourth.
James, Riley, Matthew and Brandon combined to contest the Year 10 Quad Scull – making the final despite a breakage in their
boat. In the final, they lead for half the distance (750m) but a problem in the bow seat meant they finished with virtually three
scullers only – still finishing fifth.
And to our only female representative – Sarah Thompson. Sarah, with her HSC Trials preparation underway flew up on Friday
to compete in the Open Schoolgirls’ Single and flew back on Saturday night after her race. Her heroic performance coming from
sixth position at the 500m to finish second in a PB for the 2000m distance by over 20 seconds was an uplifting experience for
the whole team – well done Sarah!
Thank you to Mr Redpath for his escorting the team on the plane and his great assistance at the regatta. Thank you to Sarah
Thompson’s family, Matthew Filmer’s family, Riley Lewis’ parents and Christian Moore’s grandparents for their support at the
regatta – it was wonderful to see you there! We all had great fun and made new friends on the Gold Coast and at the same time
again put Newcastle Grammar’s name forward as a top Rowing School – congratulations to all the rowers on a job well done!
Presentations will be held at next week’s Headmaster’s Assembly.
TRAINING PROGRAMME:
Starts for all those not involved in any other sport this Saturday at 7:00am and again at 7:00am on Sunday. Please
note that new rowers will begin training in September. Training from next week on will be posted in this newsletter
next week as well as being handed out this weekend.
SPONSOR NEEDED!
The School has a sponsor for its new coxless quad but needs sponsors for our new double and single as well as our new
training/rescue speedboat. There will again be a naming ceremony for several boats and a blessing of the fleet at a date to be
fixed. Please contact me if you would be interested in sponsoring any of these boats, which will be rowed by our crews at the
State and National Championships – your name exhibited with pride by our rowers!
Ergometer Challenge – starts next week – look for posters in the sports notice boards. Try your hand – great prizes!
The rowing timetable for the coming season will be published next week and available to all rowers at the shed.
What a great start to our new season – we can only imagine how it will develop – if you want to be a part of this great
endeavour contact me at school.
HOW WOULD YOU LIKE MERRICK TO LOOK?
Attention: All budding designers
Here’s a chance to show your burgeoning talent by designing a new Merrick
Quad!
After the recent storms, we are left with just one (very problematic) tree and
a lot of bare space.
Do we replace those that Mother Nature removed?
Or do we remove the remaining one?
How about a shady area to provide respite from the summer sun??
If you have ideas to share, please forward your suggestions to the
Headmaster’s office for consideration. Proposals can be as detailed or simple
as you like – drawings, pictures of other situations, notes, etc.
The winning entry will be judged on criteria such as aesthetics, suitability etc.
however; the final result will also be based on cost. The winner will be
announced in the newsletter and receive an open order to the store of their
choice.
