Drinking Water
The council considered the following motion from Councillor Byrne:
To ask the council if it will review the policy of adding fluoride to drinking water, given the fact
of high levels of dental hygiene and the weight of evidence of the negating health effects of
this chemical on consumers and that the cost of this chemical treatment be provided to
members.
The meetings administrator presented a report to the members from Water Services
Department stating that water fluoridation is public health policy in Ireland to aid in the
prevention and management of tooth decay. This policy was reviewed in 2000 and the main
conclusion of the review was that fluoridation of public piped water supplies should continue
as a public health measure. The report also set out the capital and operational costs. The
members acknowledged the report and sought clarity on costs involved. Mr Boland set out
the breakdown of the costs involved and confirmed that same is recouped from the Health
Service Executive.
