9. Amenity and Recreation
9.1 Objectives
In addition to the policies of the Council outlined in Chapter
13 of the Kildare County Development Plan (2005-2011) or the
relevant chapter of any subsequent County Development
Plan, it shall be an objective of the Council:
AR 1 To complete and maintain where appropriate the
riverside walk south of Main Street in conjunction with
all relevant statutory and non-statutory bodies. This
development shall include:
(i) Extending the riverside walk to the Liffey Bridge.
(ii) The extension of the high quality, well-lit
pedestrian route along the riverside up to Liffey
Bridge. The route shall also be suitable for the
requirements of disabled users.
(iii) High quality formal and informal seating
arrangements
(iv) The planting of a mixture of semi mature and
mature trees for the length of the linear park, both
formally and informally.
AR 2 To facilitate community-managed garden/allotments.
Public allotments and community gardens can have a
number of benefits including promoting healthy
lifestyles, providing an inexpensive and local source of
food and promoting diversity.
AR 3 To extend the pedestrian walkways along the Rye river
to Kellystown.
AR 4 To provide a pedestrian link along the Rye to Louisa
Bridge Train Station and Leixlip Spa.
AR 5 To facilitate a network of walking routes along the
Northern and Southern Banks of the Rye from Distillery
Lane to Woodside Estate.
AR 6 To improve existing open space areas in housing
developments that have been taken in-charge by the
Council.
AR 7 To provide additional play facilities in Leixlip in addition
to the existing facility provided in the Leixlip Amenities
Centre.
AR 8 To develop the amenity lands at Lough na Mona to
cater for active and passive recreation and to create a

pedestrian link between these amenity lands and
Leixlip Amenities Centre.
AR 9 To protect existing open spaces and recreational uses
from encroachment by other unsuitable and
incompatible uses.
AR 10 To continue to co-operate with community and sports
bodies in the development where appropriate of the
Rye River and Canal and other recreational areas in the
town.
AR 11 To prohibit the loss of existing public and private
recreational open space unless alternative recreational
facilities are provided at a suitable location.
AR 12 To maintain a green belt between Leixlip, Celbridge
and Maynooth.
AR 13 To ensure the completion of a public park at The
Wonderful Barn.
AR 14 To develop and implement a conservation plan for the
restoration and management of Leixlip Spa cSAC.
AR 15 To open up new pedestrian access routes as illustrated
on Map 4(b) to enhance pedestrian access to the New
Street.
AR 16 Any proposed pedestrian crossings shall be designed
so that there is minimum impact on either the Rye
River (cSAC) or the Canal (pNHA).
AR 17 To support the development of a swimming pool and
associated facilities in Leixlip.
AR 18 To improve the amenity of the Silleachain Valley
without compromising the biodiversity of the location
and strengthen its links with St. Catherine’s Park.
AR 19 To support the provision of public art throughout
Leixlip.
AR 20 To identify and map all areas of designated open space
within housing estates during the lifetime of this Local
Area Plan and to amend the Local Area Plan
accordingly.
AR 21 To improve pedestrian linkages between Castletown
House and the Wonderful Barn.
