9. Amenity and Recreation<br />

9.1 Objectives<br />

In addition to the polic<strong>ie</strong>s of the Council outlined in Chapter<br />

13 of the <strong>Kildare</strong> County Development <strong>Plan</strong> (2005-2011) or the<br />

relevant chapter of any subsequent County Development<br />

<strong>Plan</strong>, it shall be an objective of the Council:<br />

AR 1 To complete and maintain where appropriate the<br />

riverside walk south of Main Street in conjunction with<br />

all relevant statutory and non-statutory bod<strong>ie</strong>s. This<br />

development shall include:<br />

(i) Extending the riverside walk to the Liffey Bridge.<br />

(ii) The extension of the high quality, well-lit<br />

pedestrian route along the riverside up to Liffey<br />

Bridge. The route shall also be suitable for the<br />

requirements of disabled users.<br />

(iii) High quality formal and informal seating<br />

arrangements<br />

(iv) The planting of a mixture of semi mature and<br />

mature trees for the length of the linear park, both<br />

formally and informally.<br />

AR 2 To facilitate community-managed garden/allotments.<br />

Public allotments and community gardens can have a<br />

number of benefits including promoting healthy<br />

lifestyles, providing an inexpensive and local source of<br />

food and promoting diversity.<br />

AR 3 To extend the pedestrian walkways along the Rye river<br />

to Kellystown.<br />

AR 4 To provide a pedestrian link along the Rye to Louisa<br />

Bridge Train Station and <strong>Leixlip</strong> Spa.<br />

AR 5 To facilitate a network of walking routes along the<br />

Northern and Southern Banks of the Rye from Distillery<br />

Lane to Woodside Estate.<br />

AR 6 To improve existing open space areas in housing<br />

developments that have been taken in-charge by the<br />

Council.<br />

AR 7 To provide additional play facilit<strong>ie</strong>s in <strong>Leixlip</strong> in addition<br />

to the existing facility provided in the <strong>Leixlip</strong> Amenit<strong>ie</strong>s<br />

Centre.<br />

AR 8 To develop the amenity lands at Lough na Mona to<br />

cater for active and passive recreation and to create a<br />

pedestrian link between these amenity lands and<br />

<strong>Leixlip</strong> Amenit<strong>ie</strong>s Centre.<br />

AR 9 To protect existing open spaces and recreational uses<br />

from encroachment by other unsuitable and<br />

incompatible uses.<br />

AR 10 To continue to co-operate with community and sports<br />

bod<strong>ie</strong>s in the development where appropriate of the<br />

Rye River and Canal and other recreational areas in the<br />

town.<br />

AR 11 To prohibit the loss of existing public and private<br />

recreational open space unless alternative recreational<br />

facilit<strong>ie</strong>s are provided at a suitable location.<br />

AR 12 To maintain a green belt between <strong>Leixlip</strong>, Celbridge<br />

and Maynooth.<br />

AR 13 To ensure the completion of a public park at The<br />

Wonderful Barn.<br />

AR 14 To develop and implement a conservation plan for the<br />

restoration and management of <strong>Leixlip</strong> Spa cSAC.<br />

AR 15 To open up new pedestrian access routes as illustrated<br />

on Map 4(b) to enhance pedestrian access to the New<br />

Street.<br />

AR 16 Any proposed pedestrian crossings shall be designed<br />

so that there is minimum impact on either the Rye<br />

River (cSAC) or the Canal (pNHA).<br />

AR 17 To support the development of a swimming pool and<br />

associated facilit<strong>ie</strong>s in <strong>Leixlip</strong>.<br />

AR 18 To improve the amenity of the Silleachain Valley<br />

without compromising the biodiversity of the location<br />

and strengthen its links with St. Catherine’s Park.<br />

AR 19 To support the provision of public art throughout<br />

<strong>Leixlip</strong>.<br />

AR 20 To identify and map all areas of designated open space<br />

within housing estates during the lifetime of this <strong>Local</strong><br />

<strong>Area</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> and to amend the <strong>Local</strong> <strong>Area</strong> <strong>Plan</strong><br />

accordingly.<br />

AR 21 To improve pedestrian linkages between Castletown<br />

House and the Wonderful Barn.
