“Onward and UPWARD!”
THE BUTLER SERVES
Right now our church is at the half way point in our UPWARD basketball season. This is our 5 th year of
UPWARD and the impact of this truly amazing ministry continues to grow and build year by year.
Let me share with you an UPWARD story as it was related to me by Austin Talley. Four years ago Austin’s
nephew played UPWARD basketball in our 3 rd -4 th grade league. Just before the season’s games started his
nephew’s dad died unexpectedly. The whole family, hurting from their loss, attended the nephew’s UPWARD
games and were infused with hope by the whole atmosphere of UPWARD and particularly the half time
devotionals given by our church members. Austin began to believe God really did love him through what he saw,
felt, and heard at our UPWARD basketball games. The impact on Austin and other family members was huge.
Today Austin is an active, serving part of our church and is in FAITH training learning how to share Christ with
others.
That is just one story. There are many others. Children, their brothers and sisters, parents, grandparents and others
come to UPWARD games each week. It is my estimate that 80% of those watching the games do not attend our
church and many of those attend no church at all. The possibilities for touching lives in simple yet profound ways
is considerable.
UPWARD takes a lot of people and lot of time from those who work in this ministry. Those who assist with
UPWARD do so happily and because they want to touch lives and families. My gratitude and appreciation and
that of our whole church and community is extended to all those who serve. This list does not include those who
pray and those who give half time devotionals. Both space and fear of leaving someone out does not allow it.
THANK YOU FOR GIVING YOUR LIFE THROUGH UPWARD!
Your journey from mourning to JOY can
begin right now! This 14-week study runs with
our Discipleship Spring semester. Katherine
SMith co-leads with me. Griefshare has already
been a blessing and a help to me just in the first
two weeks.
FACING TOMORROW It may be hard for you to
feel optimistic about the future right now. If
you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member or
friend, you’ve probably found that there aren't
many who understand the deep hurt you feel.
That’s the reason for GriefShare, a special
seminar and support group for those grieving
the loss of someone close. This group is
sponsored by people who understand what you
are experiencing and want to offer you comfort
and encouragement during this difficult time.
Each GriefShare session includes a video
seminar and group discussion. A workbook
assists you with note taking, journaling and grief
study. The videos feature top experts on grief
recovery, re-enactments about living with grief,
and real-life stories of people who have
experienced losses like yours.
During the small group discussion time, you’ll
have the opportunity to interact with others who
have had a recent loss, learn about their
experiences, and share your own. Here is a list
of the session topics:
#1. Living With Grief
#2. The Journey Of Grief
#3. The Effects Of Grief
#4. When Your Spouse Dies
#5. Your Family And Grief
#6. Why?
#7-8. The Uniqueness of Grief
#9. God’s Prescription For Grief
#10. Stuck In Grief
#11-12. Top 20 Lessons Of Grief
#13. Heaven
If you have questions, please contact Bro. Gene
at the church office. Workbooks are $10.00.
Boys and Girls ~~~ 4 years – 5 th grade!
We support our missionaries and our church
by exploring other cultures and learning about missions,
praying, giving to missions, and discovering ways to
participate in missions and ministry.
By doing these things, we help to ‘Make Jesus Clear’
to others across the street and around the world.

Her brother’s memorial was held at our church.
We would like to thank you for your generous donation for the Christmas Toy Distribution of 2008. We were able to
help over 280 children have a better Christmas because of the generous people in our community. The children
received some new toys as well as some gently-used ones. Our wonderful volunteers spent many hours
assembling the bags of toys and we would not accomplish this without them.
We thank you again for your part in making a better Christmas for a child.
