was done in natural horizons, each being sifted<br />

separately. The meter units were excavated by<br />

trowel within each natural horizon. The Bhorizon<br />

denotes <strong>the</strong> subsoil, below <strong>the</strong> topsoil<br />

or plowzone, and was excavated in 10 cm<br />

increments.<br />

Soil samples from cultural horizons or<br />

features were dry sifted through 0.075-inch<br />

screens in order to recover micr<strong>of</strong>lakes, seeds,<br />

fish scales, calcined bone, carbonized nut fragments,<br />

or o<strong>the</strong>r faunal and floral remains. The<br />

sifted samples were examined under lOx-200x<br />

magnification using a binocular dissecting<br />

microscope (Wild M3 Zoom).<br />

The charcoal samples were sent to<br />

Geochron Laboratories-Krueger Enterprises in<br />

Cambridge, <strong>Massachusetts</strong> for radiocarbon age<br />

determination.<br />

RESULTS OF FIELD INVESTIGATIONS<br />

50 x 50 cm Shovel Test Pits (Fig. 2)<br />

Three shovel test pits were excavated to<br />

<strong>the</strong> north, south, and east <strong>of</strong> TP 4 where a<br />

single felsite retouch flake was found during <strong>the</strong><br />

Phase I survey. Test pits 11 through 16 were<br />

excavated in order to fur<strong>the</strong>r define <strong>the</strong> horizontal<br />

boundaries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> site and activity area.<br />

Test pits 11 and 12 were excavated to <strong>the</strong> north
