A little-used non-invasive way of measuring Ps: some preliminary results. The most common-used techniques to determine Ps: • Tracheal puncture; the best way but not always popular with naïve, non-dedicated, subjects. • Miniature pressure transducer through the glottis (introduced via the nose or mouth); perhaps the least comfortable method from the subject’s point of view. • Esophageal balloon (senses Ps indirectly). • Measuring oral pressure during voiceless stops (where Po = Ps) LSA 317 3b 2
Kozhevnikov & Arjutjunian (1960’s) demonstrated the use of a plethysmograph to determine P s . The subject is inside the plethysmograph which is hermetically sealed, creating a closed system. When there is resistance in the airways connecting the air in the plethysmograph and the air the lungs, the only way a pressure difference in the lungs can be effected is by varying the volume of the chest cavity. The variations in chest cavity volume can be sensed by a corresponding, inverse change in the pressure of air in the plethysmograph (Ppl) LSA 317 3b 3
