2011 Fall Tour Oct 29-30 th to Petersburg, VA By Jeff Locke, Tour Chairman Being a Virginian by birth, ancestry, or intelligent choice provides the opportunity to live and play in the most beautiful and most historic state. Virginia was the major site of some of the most important facets of American history: Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg, The Revolutionary War and Yorktown, and the War Between the States. As Virginians, we are aware of the significance of many historical sites in the Civil War. However, there are a few whose significance is somewhat over looked. Petersburg is such a place. It was the Fall of Petersburg that ended the conflict. We will leave at 8am on Saturday, Oct. 29 th from Sears at Greenbrier Mall and travel to Petersburg via Military Hwy and Route 460 at moderate speed. After an introduction to Petersburg‘s role in the War Against Yankee Aggression, we will visit the Siege Museum, Centre Hill Mansion, Blanford Church, Petersburg National Battlefield, the Crater, Pamplin Historical Park, and … SHOP. I have a few other surprise visits depending on our available time. The Fall of Petersburg was preceded by a ten-month siege by General Grant and 125,000 Union Troops. Unsuccessful in capturing Richmond, Grant decided to capture Petersburg to cut critical supply lines to Richmond and to General Lee‘s Army of Northern Virginia (50,000) and to stretch Lee‘s defenses until they broke. The Siege and Fall of Petersburg accomplished both. We begin our tour at the Siege Museum with a short 20 minute, film narrated by Petersburg native Joseph Cotton, which explains what happened to the city and to its citizens during the ten month siege from June 9, 1864 through April 2, 1865. How did they cope with shortages in food, drink, and military supplies? How scary was it when the women ran out of chocolate? Centre Hill Mansion helps us understand how the rich coped. It was also host to President Lincoln right after the Siege concluded. Our visit to Blanford Church will focus on the group of genteel Southern Ladies who collected bodies of slain soldiers for re-interment at Blanford and the fabulous Tiffany windows in the church; one for each state of the Confederacy. Petersburg National Battlefield will document strategic efforts of both forces and their outcome. What happened at the Crater? 10 At Pamplin Historical Park you will listen to the oral history of the soldier you choose from either side and learn what their life was like in battle and in camp. You‘ll see the plantation home of this site and learn of how it survived, and the end of the siege. Generations later this family‘s descendents re-acquired the property, restored it, and gave it to Petersburg. Visit slave quarters and hear slaves‘ histories and other opinions about slavery from all over the country. The Historic Area of Petersburg and its history will enchant you.
