“League Leaders at Work for Our Future” PRE-CONVENTION KIT FEATURED SPEAKER Saturday, June 1, 7:30 pm Mickey Edwards, Vice President, The Aspen Institute Director, Aspen-Rodel Fellowships in Public Leadership Mickey Edwards, a lecturer at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, was a Republican member of Congress from Oklahoma for 16 years (1977-92). He was a member of the House Republican leadership and served on the House Budget and Appropriations committees. Since leaving the Congress he has taught at Harvard, Georgetown, and Princeton universities and has chaired various task forces for the Constitution Project, the Brookings Institution, and the Council on Foreign Relations. In addition, he is currently an advisor to the U.S. Department of State and a member of the Princeton Project on National Security. The Aspen-Rodel Fellowship – a 24-month program focusing on promoting bipartisan problem-solving public leadership and building relationships among the nation’s emerging political leaders – provides public leaders time to step back from the daily demands of public office to reflect on the principles and values that underline democratic governance. Three officials selected for previous Rodel classes have since been elected governors of their states, seven have been elected to Congress, and one now serves as Assistant U.S. Attorney General. Mr. Edwards spoke at the LWVUS Convention in June 2012, on the issue of civil discourse and the need for nonpartisan cooperation in politics. He will continue this discussion with League members at the State Convention. His most recent book is entitled The Parties Versus the People How to Turn Republicans and Democrats into Americans, and was published in 2012. 2013 Silent Auction The State League is again hosting a Silent Auction at the 2013 State Convention. Items from across the state will be available for bidding. Each local League is asked to provide an item for the Auction. Get creative! Organize a basket of goodies from boutiques, restaurants or tourist attractions in your geographic area. Or donate a craft item from a local artist. What a great way to boast about your area of New York State! Email Mary@lwvny.org or call the state office at 518-465-4162 to let us know what you would like to donate to the Silent Auction. Donations are tax deductible as they are made to the Education Foundation. Watch on the state League website to bid on items in advance of Convention – and then come to Convention to view the items and increase your bid.
