A Million Thanks
It is bittersweet to be writing this letter, knowing
that it will be in the final edition of the Partner Post for
the 2007-2008 school year. I am overjoyed to have led
such an amazing group of people, and yet I know that
many of you will not be returning in the Fall. I
want to take this opportunity to thank all of you
for making this year such a welcoming,
memorable experience for me.
To the Tuck Partner Board: thank you for your
9- May Calendar
enthusiasm and energy. Without your dedication to this
10- Tiny Tuckies Coloring Page
organization, frankly, there would be no organization.
The creativity and individuality you put into each and
every club, committee event, and TP publication brought the Tuck Partners group to new heights. Next
year’s Board has large shoes to fill.
A special thanks to the TP’08 members of the Board who stuck with us for each and every
meeting this year. Your wisdom and experience was a huge help to us all.
To Katie Flint and Hana Massecar: Thank you for your patience as I learned the innerworkings
of Tuck and Tuck Partners this year. At no point did you ever make me feel like my multiple
e-mails each week were excessive (even though I know they were).
To Christie St. John: Thank you for your sense of humor and smile. Thank you for taking the
time to listen to me about what I believed Tuck Partners needed from Admissions, and for having the
confidence to let me dive head first into my crazy ideas.
To Cameron Steese: Thank you for your support in the creation of the Prospective Visitor
Program (still looking for a better name). I realize this program added more work to your already busy
job, and I truly appreciate your help.
To Amy Harman Burkart: Thank you for being you: a little bit zany (like me), incredibly
honest, and bursting with an enormous heart. Thank you for being my friend from the beginning, even
when everyone was pretty much a stranger. That first walk we took meant the world to me, as have the
many walks and teas that followed. I could not have led this organization without you.
For those TP'09s returning to Tuck next fall, I look forward to many more
exciting times (when we get to enjoy the events without doing all the work )! To
the TP’08s, you will be missed, and we all wish you luck and happiness.
Wherever you are this summer, I hope you have an amazing time! See you in the Fall,
The Cook & Learn events of April 8 th and 9 th
were a huge success! Partners and students alike
spent an evening cooking ethnic meals originating
from France, India, Brazil, Belgium, the UK, and the
USA. Chatting about their host's culture and culinary
habits while in the kitchen, the participants had the
chance to enjoy a delicious meal, to meet up with old
friends, and to make new acquaintances.
I am so pleased that this final activity of the
International Committee for this school year was such
a hit. With the year coming to a close, I would like to
take the opportunity to thank all the committee
members who made the activities we organized a
success every time:
Claire, Pei-Yin, Severine,
Shweta, and Swathi.
Thanks girls, you really rocked!
We're already looking forward to seeing
everyone again in September to welcome the TP'10s.
Have a wonderful summer!
Second-Years Speak Up
By Carolyn Gasser
Amidst packing, buying houses, securing jobs, and planning the next phase of their lives, a few
second-year Tuck partners agreed to share some thoughts and advice with all who will remain another
year in the Upper Valley.
When asked what she enjoyed most about her Tuck experience, Jessica Christ expressed the
sentiments of many partners: "I have loved meeting so many great people. Tuck seems to attract really
social people who enjoy being a part of a community. People here are just nice to each other. I'll look
back and have very happy memories of time spent with Tuck friends."
Irene Delbosco says she learned a lot from Tuck's diverse community, especially that there are
people worth knowing and meeting everywhere. "It is worth it to make the effort to open your heart to
new communities. Even if it's hard — especially in a different language — it is also very refreshing."
Irene adds that her children have also benefitted from their experience as Tiny Tuckies.
Not only did living at Sachem expose them to other children "from so many different
places, with different languages," but their father was also able to spend more time
with them as a student than he ever could as a full-time employee.
Kelly Morgan agrees that being able to spend more time with her daughter is a
great perk of life as a Tuck partner. "I worked long hours before coming to Tuck and decided to take a
little break from the fast-paced lifestyle when we moved here with our five-week-old baby.” She is
pleased that moving from a full-time job in San Antonio gave her the opportunity to spend more time
with her daughter.
When asked if he had any advice for the TP '09s, Ryan Waldron suggests, "Just try to do as
many outdoor activities as possible. There are so many great things to do! Just get involved, go hike
somewhere, or get a group to go skiing at Stowe.” He emphasizes the advantages of the Upper Valley
lifestyle and the importance of enjoying them while the opportunity is available.
Upon first arriving in Hanover, Katie Kindred, a self-proclaimed "compulsive list-maker,"
wrote down all the things she wanted to do during her two years in New Hampshire. Her
list included things like: shop for antiques "in a sleepy New England town"; see a battle
reenactment on Lexington and Concord; sail on Lake Winnipesauke; cheer on the
runners at the Boston marathon; and visit Montreal, Quebec City, and New York City.
Katie proudly says she has accomplished most of her list and hopes to complete it before
Kelly also made a list, which improving her cooking skills as wells as finding a way to
return to the workforce. This last she was able to accomplish by working for a Tuck professor and, as
a result, she has decided to obtain a Masters Degree in Education.
To anyone who hasn't made a list or hasn't accomplished all they intended, Jessica says, "Don't
be too hard on yourself if you didn't do everything on your list. I'm sure if you didn't, it was because
you were too busy doing other things — the things you couldn't possibly anticipate or list ahead of
time."
Kelly agrees and adds, "For many of us, the end of the second year brings excitement
about returning to a life that includes a steady income. But with that income comes the loss
of free time. Take advantage of the slower-paced life here in the Upper Valley and spend
time with the friends you've made at Tuck."
India Comes to the Upper Valley
By Shabduli Purav
Gain an understanding of the “India Opportunity”
and get a taste of Indian Cuisine and Culture:
Mark your calendars for May 9, 2008.
India: a mosaic of opportunities and challenges. In the recent past India's economy
has been on an ever-increasing growth curve with positive indicators, including a stable eight
percent annual growth, rising foreign exchange reserves, a booming capital market, and rapidly
expanding FDI inflows. India has emerged as the second fastest growing major economy in the
world.
We all have heard this stellar success story, but India's business opportunities and challenges still
remain a mystery. Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, which has been at the forefront of addressing the
rising pre-eminence of India in global business, brings the second edition of the Tuck India Business
Conference on May 9, 2008. The conference is a forum for business leaders, entrepreneurs, professionals,
economists, investors, students, and the Upper Valley community to share ideas and learn about the
opportunities presented by India's phenomenal growth.
The conference will feature eminent personalities, including Ron Somers, President of the United
States-India Business Council, who will deliver the inaugural address. The keynote address will be delivered
by Arun K. Nanda, Executive Director & President of one of the world's largest tractor companies, Mahindra
& Mahindra Limited. Very recently, Mr. Nanda was awarded 'Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur' (Knight of
the Legion of Honor) by the President of the French Republic.
Panel One — Growth beyond I.T. and Outsourcing: Mapping India's Future
India, synonymous with strategic off-shoring until recently, has gradually grown into a market in its
own right. There are also some roadblocks in the path of sustaining this rapid growth. This panel will address
such opportunities and challenges across different segments of the India economy. The discussion will feature
distinguished panelists such as accomplished Tuck alumni Chip Greene T'92 (Partner, Mumbai Office Head,
The Parthenon Group) and H. J. Markley T'74 (Executive Vice President, John Deere).
Panel Two — Looking Outwards: India's Progression in the New World Order
In 2006, foreign acquisitions by Indian companies totaled $23 billion, more than five times the total in
2005 and approximately 20 times the total in 2000! A prime example is Tata's acquisition of Jaguar and Land
Rover. This panel will explore the trends in flows of capital to and from India. The panelists include senior
executives such as Matt Russell, MD, of Deutsche Bank.
Lunchtime Chat:
Immerse yourself in Indian culture in the company of Lutz Goedde, T'97, Deputy Director of Global
Development of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In keeping with the spirit of the conference,
attendees will be treated to delicious spread of Indian dishes.
Grand Finale:
The conference will conclude with an Indian musical event providing a glimpse into India's
rich culture. The featured artist is Prasanna from Berklee College of Music in Boston. Prasanna is
a world-renowned guitarist and composer of Jazz/World and Indian Classical fusion music.
