A day of bikes and books
By Roslyn Ryan
Editor
Students all across the
county were able to admire
some hot wheels last Th ursday
– and walk away with
a free book to boot – as the
Riders for Readers program
roared through each
school.
A note to our readers
As of this month, Powhatan Today
will no longer be publishing the
Weekender, which Powhatan residents
had been receiving twice a
month. Starting June 23, 2010, we
will begin publishing a once-monthly
on in partnership with the
Rotary Club of Powhatan
in an eff ort to promote literacy
to local 3rd and 4th
grade students.
Th e program, which has
been in the Richmond area
for the past seven years,
off ered over 700 Powhatan
students the chance to pick
out a book of their choice.
county-wide edition, aimed at
offering more county residents a
glimpse of the award-winning
coverage we strive to provide our
readers each and every week.
For those readers who enjoyed the
Weekender, Parting Shots and other
features will have a place in the new
Once they had selected a
book, students were in for
yet another treat: Riders for
Readers volunteers allowed
each child to have a seat on
one of their bikes, the better
to get a feel for what it
might be like to take to the
open road.
Defi nitely not a bad way
to kick off summer break.
structure as well.
We’d like to sincerely thank our
loyal readers for their support as we
continue to seek out new and better
ways to provide the Powhatan
community with the best news
coverage possible.
