Walking the Walk
were raised during the town
hall meeting, coupled with the
statistic that the majority of
Pfeiffer’s students cross
Highway 52 in front of the
President’s House, as opposed
to the stoplight located further
up the highway in front of the
Stokes Student Center. The
new sidewalk is only the part
of the process of constructing
safer pathways for students
dealing with a major highway
cutting their college campus
in half.
“To be honest, the
sidewalk looks great,” senior
By Jessica Kelley
This past June Pfeiffer
said its goodbyes to a highly
valuable member of its staff.
Director of Student
Involvement Havaleh Havelka
left Pfeiffer to further pursue
her career and that has left a
big void in student
development.
“One of the things
I appreciated about Havaleh
was that she saw the best in
me. I had a rough first year at
Pfeiffer and Havaleh gave me
a chance and was able to take
my strengths and give the
tools and encouragement to be
a student leader,” Christina
Sadler, leader of Campus
Activities Board, stated.
“CAB”, or the Campus
Activities Board, plans and
provides social, cultural,
recreational and educational
activities that are sensitive to
the needs of the entire student
Tyler Joyner, who lives on
the south side of campus,
said. “It adds some great
positive appeal to the
university. But in regards
to practicalities, most
students still use the
roadway beside it.”
University leaders
say they are continually
working to make
improvements, and expect
many of those changes
sooner than later.
“Most everything we
have on the improvements
body. Since Havelka’s
departure CAB has tried to
fill this empty position by
planning activities around
campus for students.
“Both Christina
Sadler and Jenny Hicks
have done great work with
the CAB this fall, even
though they have many
other demands-academics,
etc.-on their time,” Dean of
Students Russ Sharples
said.
“CAB has some
exciting things planned for
next semester. We hope to
have Casino Night, which is
already planned for March
23 rd . It was a huge hit last
year. We are also planning
on having some new creative
things for Aprilfest, a
shopping day at Concord-
Mills, a laser light foam
party, and much, much
more!” Sadler promised.
NEWS
list is going to be done this
upcoming spring,” Sharples
said. “Larger projects, such as
the new bookstore and a
coffeehouse project in Stokes,
are planned to be open next
fall.”
TRYING TO FILL THE GAP
“When Havaleh left in
June, CAB was left with a large
to-do list in order to be prepared
for the fall semester of events.
It has been very challenging as
a student trying to complete all
the tasks. It takes hard work to
put on quality weekend events
without a Director of Student
Involvement,” Sadler explained.
So, where are we at in
the search for a new Director of
Student Involvement? Sharples
tells us two prospective
candidates have been
interviewed so far. But while
Student Development continues
their search, Sadler along with
the CAB staff will have to work
a little harder.
“This semester has
proven to be very challenging,
but at the end of the day it is
what I love to do and what I
plan on doing for the rest of my
life,” Sadler said.
The Falcon’s Eye
will keep you updated on
the search for a new
Director of Student
Involvement.
