By Ashley Bowers As many of you heard during Convocation, there is a new program on campus that combines the questions of students with the answers of alumni. Pixie Gentle, President of the Alumni Board of Directors, started this mentorship program this semester with the help of Pfeiffer student Tony Carnes. While working together at a charity event, Carnes suggested to Gentle that Pfeiffer needed a program so students could get involved with alumni and pick their brains. “We’re happy to mentor anybody, even if it isn’t a career question,” Gentle announced. NEWS BLAST FROM THE PAST “This program has opened up a whole new set of resources that I will use as a senior,” senior Lauren Kaminski said. The alumni board is ready and willing to answer questions as soon as they receive them. Gentle has set up an email address through Pfeiffer that she checks regularly. As soon as the email is received, a confirmation email is sent back to the sender and within a week a member of the alumni board will respond with an answer. With the number of board members totaling between 30 and 40, there is a vast diversity in knowledge available to cultivate. This is also the place to send in new ideas. “If any student has any new suggestions for programs they wish to see the alumni board start up, we’d love to hear them,” Gentle said. “We would also love to start getting ideas for what the Homecoming money will go toward next year.” Gentle is a former Pfeiffer student herself (1979- 1983) and is serving her first year as President of the Alumni Board of Directors. The mentoring program is her first initiative as president. “We want to be as involved with the Pfeiffer students and community as possible,” Gentle added. Members of the alumni board are easy to spot when they are on campus. They will always be wearing a name tag displaying their membership and most of them will be wearing a Pfeiffer shirt. “We’re approachable. If you see us on campus, come up and talk to us. We love meeting and talking to y’all and learning what y’all’s Cody Teague shaved his long loved goatee after the Pfeiffer community raised $210.55 for “Make a Wish”. By Jordy Carson Pfeiffer is making changes with its books, cooks, and looks, and it has nothing to do with Dr. Seuss. By the fall of 2012, students will be shopping in a new bookstore that also serves food and drinks. “It’ll give you that Starbucks kind of feel,” Pfeiffer’s Director of Facilities, Sharon Bard, said. “You can eat and study.” This is one of the changes students can expect to see in the near future, and there are some changes students won’t see. “Keep in mind, it’s not just Misenheimer campus…there’s a greater impact,” Bard said. Book services in Raleigh had been purely mailorder with no actual books sold on campus. “We don’t see them on a regular basis, but we want to give them the same service,” Bard said. The bookstore provides services to the Misenheimer, Charlotte and Raleigh campuses. “The industry is changing,” said Dr. Tracy Espy, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Textbooks can be downloaded immediately.” Some students are welcoming the digital age with open arms; others are not so open. Freshman, Abbie Goodman thinks digital books aren’t as reliable as traditional ones. “Your book doesn’t die while you’re gone,” Goodman said. As part of a threetier plan, Pfeiffer will make changes to its bookstore and food service. Administrators are also going to begin an energy project, which means lower costs to students and administration. Sodexo, the company that provides Pfeiffer’s food service, will be taking over the operations of the bookstore and energy plan. Sodexo Representative Bryan Harris is in charge of the changes . “We’ve got an architect and a retail designer involved,” Harris said. Pfeiffer’s new bookstore will include a snack bar, a big-screen gaming TV, meeting tables for students, and computers. “All the students that currently have rentals need to bring those back to us,” Harris said. “We’ll be providing them next semester.” “They[Sodexo] are investing in us $1.2 million in energy alone,” Bard said. $570,000 of that money is for energy work on NEWS BIG CHANGES FOR FOOD AND FACILITIES the Charlotte campus. An additional $150,000 is being used for bookstore and lounge improvements. “We’re only doing projects that have a five year payback, so the savings can pay off the $1.2 million,” Bard said. That’s only the tip of the iceberg. A focus group is also helping with the direction of meal plans for The Cafe. “We’re going to determine what food products would be best to add to the campus,” Harris said. “I’d like to see a lot more gluten-free things,” freshman Megan Lyerly said. “It makes it easier if you don’t have to go and ask for it.” Soon students will have a wider variety of foods to choose from, and more meal plan options that include “Flex Dollars”, which can be used anywhere food is sold on campus. Students will now be able to purchase a meal for a friend. The energy project includes new air conditioning in Washington Hall, new sinks and shower heads that save water, and insulation of underground pipework. There will also be around 400 energy-saving windows installed. “What we’re really trying to do is expand services to students and to give them more options for eating, but also to look at where we are technologically today,” President Miller said.
