1971-72, 1974-75 Recipient of a Ford Foundation Southeast Asia Fellowship for
research on Iu Mien Yao and Kim Mun Yao vernacular and literary languages
conducted in Thailand, Laos, and southern Vietnam.
1984 Recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipend for research
on Iu Mien song-poems, in particular a 47-page book of wedding songs in the literary
language.
1986 Recipient of a grant from the Mustard Seed Foundation for research on Iu Mien
dialects, Guangdong, China.
1987-88 Recipient of a grant from the National Academy of Sciences (CSCPRC) for a
full academic year at the Guangxi Institute for Nationalities, Nanning, Guangxi,
China, as co-director of an Iu Mien – Chinese – English Dictionary Project.
Extensive investigations of Iu Mien dialects in Guangxi were also made.
2001-03 Recipient of a Maclellan Foundation grant for continued work on an Iu Mien – English
dictionary (Thailand/Laos dialect).
2003 Biola University, Faculty Award of Excellence for University and Community Service.
2004 Philadelphia Biblical University, Lifetime Achievement Award.
