1992-1994: Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Molecular Pharmacology, Monsanto Corporate Research, St.
Louis, MO 63167.
Investigated the interactions between the nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase pathways in inflammation. Discovered
that nitric oxide activated COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes and demonstrated through a series of enzymatic, in vitro and in vivo
models of inflammation that this represented an important pathway through which nitric oxide exerts its physiological and
pathological effects.
1990-1992: Postdoctoral Fellow, The William Harvey Research Institute, St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical
College, Charterhouse Square, London ECIM6BQ, UK.
Investigated the in vivo mechanism(s) of release of nitric oxide from nitrovasodilators and the implication in cardiovascular
and inflammatory pharmacology.
1987-1990: PhD in Pharmacology, from the London University, The William Harvey Research Institute, St.
Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, Charterhouse Square, London ECIM6BQ, UK.
Mentor: Professor Sir John Vane, Nobel Laureate
NIH/NHLBI
Pulmonary Collectins, Hyaluronan and Macrophages
Using both pharmacological and molecular means, the major goals of this project are to examine the contribution of reactive
oxygen and nitrogen species to post-translational modification of Surfactant Proteins A and D, and the generation of low
molecular weight hyaluronan (HA) to the inflammatory process after bleomycin-induced lung injury. The roles of HA, SP-
A/D and the formation of a lipid raft-associated signaling unit that mediate altered macrophage function will be examined.
