Purpose <strong>and</strong> Objectives<br />

Purpose: This course is designed to provide the practicing colon <strong>and</strong> rectal surgeon with updates on important aspects <strong>of</strong> caring for<br />

patients with colon <strong>and</strong> rectal diseases. Emphasis is placed on a broad range <strong>of</strong> topics to address the needs <strong>of</strong> a diversified group <strong>of</strong><br />

attendees.<br />

Conference Objectives — At the end <strong>of</strong> the program, the participant should be able to:<br />

• Review options for optimizing the outcomes <strong>of</strong> a colorectal service line<br />

including the use <strong>of</strong> minimally invasive robotic assisted surgery<br />

• Describe the drawbacks, benefits, indications <strong>and</strong> technical options for<br />

transanal excision <strong>of</strong> rectal cancer<br />

• Describe optimal evidence-based pathways to minimize surgical site<br />

infections in colon <strong>and</strong> rectal surgery<br />

• Discuss the technical aspects <strong>and</strong> patient selection process associated<br />

with sacral nerve stimulation for the management <strong>of</strong> fecal incontinence<br />

• Review the indications, timing <strong>and</strong> spectrum <strong>of</strong> therapeutic options for<br />

patients with diverticulitis <strong>of</strong> the sigmoid colon<br />

• Discuss factors associated with gastrointestinal anastomotic leaks <strong>and</strong><br />

the possible role <strong>of</strong> fibrin glue in minimizing risk<br />

• Describe the evolving changes in the payment system for healthcare<br />

delivery <strong>and</strong> the influence on colorectal surgery programs<br />
