PURPOSE: This course is designed to provide the practicing colon <strong>and</strong> rectal surgeon with updates on important<br />
aspects <strong>of</strong> caring for patients with colon <strong>and</strong> rectal diseases. Emphasis is placed on a broad range <strong>of</strong> topics to address<br />

OBJECTIVES: At the end <strong>of</strong> this program, the participant should be able to:<br />
✓ Describe new methods to treat anal warts<br />
✓ Explain an alternate approach for mobilizing the splenic flexure in clinical practice<br />
✓ Discuss the most common misunderst<strong>and</strong>ings in the diagnosis <strong>and</strong> treatment <strong>of</strong> hemorrhoids for patients <strong>and</strong> physicians<br />
✓ Review new therapeutic modalities for treatment <strong>of</strong> fecal incontinence<br />
✓ Discuss the role <strong>of</strong> laparoscopic <strong>and</strong> robotic surgery for rectal <strong>and</strong> colon cancer<br />
✓ Review the use <strong>of</strong> biologic agents for treatment <strong>of</strong> inflammatory bowel disease <strong>and</strong> associated risks relative to surgery<br />
✓ Discuss technical differences between single incision <strong>and</strong> conventional laparoscopic colectomy<br />
✓ Describe the technique <strong>of</strong> laparoscopic washout<br />
✓ Discuss management issues in patients with poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas <strong>of</strong> the rectum<br />
✓ Recognize current evidence-based trends for perioperative patient management<br />
✓ Explain new approaches regarding bowel prep, pain management, nutritional support, <strong>and</strong> pharmacological measures that may lead to decreased<br />
morbidity <strong>and</strong> earlier discharge<br />
✓ Describe how pre-operative staging is now an essential factor in the multidisciplinary management <strong>of</strong> rectal cancer<br />
