Dear Friends of Mercy, 

As I complete my last year as President of Mercy High School after 23 years 

in Administration, I am especially proud to welcome you to the 31 st Annual 

Mercy High School Auction. Through your support, Mercy High School will 

continue offering an academically rigorous, Christ-centered college 

preparatory program to as many deserving young women as possible. 

On our 31st anniversary we celebrate both the decades-long tradition of 

the Mercy Auction and also the fresh energy and excitement of our 

beautiful new location, which for the second year in a row will be the 

Diamond Center at Rock Financial Showplace. As I’m sure you recall from 

last year’s Auction, this new location offers flexibility in designing an 

auction experience that is more bidder-friendly, and a floor plan that is 

more spacious and attractive than was possible to offer using the school 

facilities. This wonderful venue is available to us, thanks to the generosity 

of one of our Mercy parents, John Bowen, whose kindness deserves special 

recognition. 

I also want to recognize and give thanks to all of the hardworking 

volunteers who have already contributed so much to the success of 

tonight’s event, whether by attending or sponsoring a gift-gathering 

party, making a contribution toward the acquisition of an item, or finding 

attractive gifts to be auctioned. This Auction could not succeed without 

you. 

I ask you to join me in thanking this year’s Auction Chair, Theresa Saroki, 

who is completing her 3 rd year as auction chair, and also Kari Weber, a 

Mercy parent and our staff Auction Coordinator. These hard workers, and 

so many more of you who donated your valuable time and talent, are 

responsible for organizing and preparing all of the many details of 

tonight’s event. 

Of course, the Mercy Auction’s success would not be possible without our 

celebrity co-hosts, Channel 4 News Anchor Steve Garagiola, our gracious 

Master of Ceremonies, and Joseph DuMouchelle, renowned art gallery 

owner and antique dealer, who is our skilled Auctioneer. These men so 

generously contribute their time and talents to this event each year. 

Please be sure to thank them for all they do to assure our success.

Dear Friends of Mercy, 

Thank you so much for supporting Mercy High School’s most important fundraiser 

of the year: our annual auction. Tonight’s event helps to provide the highest 

quality college preparatory education and spiritual formation for high school girls 

in Michigan. 

This year’s auction is special to me, because I have served as the chairperson of 

this auction for the past three years, and this will be my last because next year my 

daughter heads off to college. I will truly miss Mercy High School, and I will miss 

working with so many hardworking volunteers who, year after year, have really 

done all the work to make each auction a success. 

Parents, teachers, friends, students, alumnae, school staff, volunteers, local 

business people, professionals, community leaders – so many people have 

donated their time, skills, gifts, financial support, moral support, as well as 

offering their homes for gift-gathering parties where many of the items you will 

see tonight were donated. I also want to thank my husband Allan and my 

daughter Sam, both of whom “donated” my time to Mercy over the past three 

years. The success of tonight’s event is due to the contributions of so many 

people, all of whom it is my pleasure to thank and praise. 

Whether you bid on a lot of little items, or a few big ones, or whether you have 

helped by volunteering or donating merchandise – in a some significant way you 

are making it possible for Mercy High School to educate girls who make a 

difference. As you sample the delicious fare, the fine beverages, and inspect the 

attractive selection of goods and services up for auction, enjoy the feeling that 

your purchases will enhance the academic programs of Mercy High, and helping 

to ensure that the promise of its education will continue to be available for future 

generations of girls.

Steve is very familiar to the Mercy 

community, especially the Mercy 

Auction, having served as emcee 

for 14 years. 

Not only is Steve a news anchor and 

reporter at WDIV - TV 4, but in 2006 

he was recognized by the National 

Academy of Television Arts and 

Sciences for having devoted over 25 

years to the television industry and for 

having made significant contributions 

to the Michigan broadcast community 

during that time. 

Among his proudest accomplishments 

in the media, he cites his book 

TV - News Writing and Surviving, and 

two seasons as “the voice of Mercy 

Basketball.”

Live Auction Rules

1) All Bidders are to register at the registration table and receive a bidder’s number. All bidders 

are to furnish their full name, address, and telephone number. 

2) All purchased items are to be paid for on the night of the AUCTION, and no item is to be 

removed from the premises until payment has been made. 

3) If a dispute arises during the Live Auction between two or more bidders, the Auctioneer may 

settle the matter, or may immediately put the item up for sale again, and resell to the highest 

bidder. The Auctioneer may reject any and all bids if deemed inappropriate to the item selling. 

The decision of the Auctioneer is final. 

4) Although the utmost effort has been made to accurately describe the items, the Auctioneer 

and school are not responsible for incorrect description, authenticity, genuineness, or any 

defect. No warranties are given or provided. No allowance will be made, or sale set aside, on 

account of any incorrectness, error in cataloging, or imperfection not noted. No deduction 

will be allowed on damaged articles, as all goods being exposed for public exhibition are SOLD 

“as is.” 

5) It is solely the buyer’s responsibility to check dates and restrictions on all certificates. 

6) Statements or corrections made to items during the sale take precedence over the printed 

material. 

7) Persons attending during the exhibition, sale, or removal of goods, assume all risks of damage 

or loss to person and property, and specifically release the Auctioneer or school from liability. 

Neither the Auctioneer nor the school shall be liable by reason of any defect in, or condition 

of the premises on which the auction is held. 

8) PAYMENTS BY THE SUCCESSFUL BIDDER MUST BE MADE IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE LIVE AUCTION. 

ONE MAY PAY WITH CASH, CHECK, MASTERCARD, VISA, OR DISCOVER. PAYMENT IN FULL THIS EVENING 

IS MANDATORY (EXCEPT WHERE FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE PREVIOUSLY BY THE 

BIDDER). 

9) There will be no exchanges or refunds of items, except where stated. 

TAX INFORMATION 

If you are the successful bidder and purchase an item at the Live Auction, only the amount of your 

payment in excess of the fair market value of the item is deductible as a charitable contribution 

for federal income tax purposes. 

Example: Assume one of the Live Auction items is a diamond necklace with a fair market 

value of $1,000. You bid $1,250 for this item and are the winning bidder. The amount of your 

charitable contribution deduction for federal income tax purposes is $250. 

Please consult your tax advisor for additional information. 


Silent Auction Rules

1) Items in all Silent Auctions, and Almost Live Items have bid sheets. Persons desiring to bid must 

do so by writing their bidder number next to the preprinted bid amount on the appropriate 

line. 

2) Each increasing bid and the bidder’s paddle number is to be written on the appropriate line 

beneath the prior bid. 

3) All Silent Auctions, and Almost Live will close at various intervals throughout the evening (see page 

1 for times). The Emcee will announce the actual closing time for everyone’s convenience. The 

closing bid highlighted by the Auction table bid monitor for Silent and Almost Live constitutes 

the winning bid. 

4) Bidder is able to secure a winning bid before official table closing time by placing his/her 

bidder number in the guaranteed bid box. 

5) In the event of dispute, the Auction official shall be the final authority and shall determine 

the winning bidder. The official’s decision is FINAL. 

6) Under no circumstances may the bid sheets be removed from the tables. 

7) All items and services must be used within time limits specifically stated, and are subject to 

the terms and conditions stipulated by the donor, if any. Please note expiration dates. 

8) All sales are final. There will be no refunds or exchanges on items. While every reasonable effort 

has been made to describe each item correctly, all items and services are sold “where is” and 

“as is.” 

9) Auction bidders may claim their items by presenting their PAID RECEIPTS to the Auction Bid 

Monitors at the appropriate gift tables.
