Heart of Mercy
Mercy High School has bestowed the prestigious Heart of Mercy Award
for the past 17 years on a student and staff member who devotedly live out
the Mercy values of Human Dignity, Service, Justice, Mercy, and Option
for the Poor. Congratulations and thank you to 2011 awardees Mr. Will
Gervais, Associate Principal, and Teresa Rotondo '11 for being inspiring
role models, selfless leaders, and compassionate ambassadors for everyone,
every day at Mercy.
Reflections on Mr. Gervais:
“Will’s ability to bring about change behind the scenes is a true gift.
He simply goes about doing what he has to do intelligently, quietly, selflessly.
He is the epitome of the adage actions speak louder than words.”
“Mr. Gervais has a sense of purpose, a focus on Mercy values, a loyal work
ethic and a personal commitment to Mercy. His work with the Sensitivity
Workshop and Human Relations Council stand as his legacy to this school.”
Reflections on Teresa:
“Teresa recognizes the uniqueness in everyone. She gives her all to
help others, respect others, and lives to serve others for God. Her faith
is so strong.”
“She is uplifting, kind-hearted, spirited and goes out of her way to make
you feel reaffirmed and accepted.”
Mr. Gervais’ Last Days at Mercy
By NEWSPRINT Copy Editor Lizzie Peterson '11
This year, we will say goodbye to someone who has worked for
a long time helping to make our school the great place it is today.
After devoting 42 years to Mercy High School, Associate Principal
Will Gervais will retire in June.
After Mr. Gervais decided to go into teaching, he transferred to
Ferris State University before finishing
his degree at Northern Michigan
University. He majored in biology with a
minor in chemistry, and later earned his
administration degrees from Michigan
State University. He took a position in
the Farmington Public Schools teaching
science classes at Power Middle School.
On a staff in-service day in 1969, he
took a tour of Mercy High School with
the Principal, Sister Camille Kelley. The building was brand new, and
Sister Camille had some interesting ideas for the school. Mr. Gervais
was impressed by all of the new facilities, and asked if there were
any science positions available. Sister Camille said that there may be,
and so he applied for a job.
“I thought it was just an incredible school,” said Mr. Gervais.
Mr. Gervais started out teaching biology and a general science class.
Once Sister Camille retired, Sister Nancy Thompson became Principal
and the Associate Principal position was available. Mr. Gervais applied
for it, and he’s held the position ever since. Mr. Gervais has greatly
All Heart of Mercy honorees are listed on a plaque in the Mercy Reception Area.
enjoyed his years at Mercy, with all of the
challenges and opportunities that the school
has to offer. He has worked with Human
Relations Council, and has been a major contributor to the Cultural
Sensitivity Workshop, Ethnic Bazaar, and the Black History Month
assembly. “My work with Human Relations
Council and the cultural sensitivity workshops has
been very rewarding for me,” said Mr. Gervais.
“He’s just a very genial, warm, and engaging
person,” said English teacher and HRC
moderator Mike Gruber. “At the [cultural
sensitivity workshops] he’s always a very sensitive
voice for the girls to respond to. He responds to them
very warmly and tries to get them to see how special
they are in making Mercy special.”
Mr. Gervais has also been an advocate for the integration of
technology in the school. He has worked tirelessly researching and
staying current on the directions technology seems to be taking. “Mercy
is a forward-thinking institution, a school that continues to change as the
educational landscape has changed. For that, I am very proud,” said Principal
Carolyn Witte. “Mr. Gervais certainly has been an integral part of that change.”
Mr. Gervais says he will miss all the people at Mercy, the daily
interaction with students, parents, teachers, and board members.
“Mr. Gervais has always been there and been very supportive throughout my
years on HRC,” said senior Jasmine Hart. “I’ll really miss him next year.”
CIRC LE OF MERC Y
“For the Circle of Mercy is timeless: it is Spirit of Life itself.”
Catherine McAuley, Founder of the Sisters of Mercy, began her
ministry in 1827. She recognized a need and fulfilled a dream,
“No work of charity can be more productive of good to society than the careful
instruction of women.” Mercy High School lives out her timeless vision
striving to provide the finest education to young women of all economic
backgrounds. The Circle of Mercy is a group of givers providing
scholarships and tuition assistance to ensure students who dream of
a Mercy experience are afforded the opportunity. Their support is
structured as an endowed scholarship fully funded or funded over time.
It can also be a financial commitment over a specific period of time,
usually 4 or more years, to be used for tuition aid. Mercy awarded close
to $400,000 in scholarships and tuition assistance last year. Together we
are making a difference and helping to expand the Circle of Mercy.
The 2nd Annual Circle of Mercy donor reception was held February
8, 2011 to rejoice in the common bond that unites those who have been
touched by Catherine’s legacy and Mercy’s mission. This wonderful
evening connects donors and recipients and is a powerful example of
what contributing to the everlasting effect of the Circle of Mercy can
mean. “I enjoyed the Circle of Mercy dinner. It was so nice be able to meet
and spend time with the Wahls who helped make my attendance at Mercy
possible.” Jackie Wilke '12.
Scholarships are not just money. They are blessings in the lives of young women.
They are opportunities for the future. They are experiences waiting for us to
discover. A simple “thank you” does not seem enough.
Scholarship Recipient, Class of 2011
Tuition assistance from Mercy gave me the opportunity to obtain a college
preparatory education in a friendly but competitive environment. The teachers
were not only caring classroom instructors but mentors as well. The Mercy
experience was truly the foundation of a lifelong commitment to excellence.
Join the Circle of Mercy
• Make a financial commitment of $2,500
or more for four or more years, allowing us
to assure a student of consistent financial
assistance during her time at Mercy High
School.
• Invest $25,000 or more as an endowed
fund with a one-time gift or over a series
of years. Once we have received at least
$10,000 we will begin your fund. One year
after contributions reach the $25,000 level,
we will begin to make gifts to your area of
interest at Mercy High School.
Endowed funds may be established for
virtually any aspect of operations, as
agreed by the donor and the school.
Tuition assistance is our largest and most
popular fund focus, however, there are
also funds restricted to the physical plant,
programming, and “unrestricted” funds
to be used in the area of greatest need as
defined by the school.
CIRC LE OF MERC Y
“In Mercy, the Spirit – hope will lift us out of doubt.
In Mercy, we join with one another on our journey.”
The Catherine and George Wright, Sr.
Endowed Fund
The Wright Family established an endowed
fund in the name of their parents: The Catherine
and George Wright, Sr. Endowed Fund. The
objective of this fund is to provide financial aid
for one or more Mercy High School students.
Three out of the four children born to George H. Wright, Sr.
Catherine and George Wright have a direct
connection to Mercy High School. Alice graduated
in '67, Julie graduated in '69 and George taught religion from 1970 to 2007.
“Catholic education was very important to our parents as reflected in the
fact that my sister and I attended Mercy and our brothers George and Bob
attended University of Detroit High School. The fact that our brother ended up
teaching at Mercy was icing on the cake as far as our parents were concerned.
It was very natural, then, for us to think about honoring our parents by
establishing an endowed fund in their name,” says Julie Wright Fisher '69.
George says, “Our family was of modest means but somehow our parents
sacrificed to send us to Catholic schools. Every one of us (and our spouses)
achieved an advanced degree and at some time in our careers has taught.
And talk about multi-generational influence: of 12 grandchildren, 8 have been
teachers.”
When Catherine Wright passed away on February 16, 2010, at the age
of 96, the four children and their spouses came together and decided that
they would honor Mr. and Mrs. Wright for their gifts of family values and
support of education by endowing this fund to carry on their legacy in
perpetuity. This generous gift makes the Wright Family members of the
Circle of Mercy.
Alice Wright Gilbert '67 says, “We are grateful to Mercy for this
opportunity to honor our parents with an endowed scholarship to help
make the Circle of Mercy grow even wider.”
– From the “The Circle of Mercy” song written by Jeannette Goglia, RSM
The Wright Family
SR. REGINA MARIE DOELKER, RSM '56
ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND -
$87,586
This endowed fund was established in honor of
Sr. Regina Marie Doelker, RSM '56 at the
announcement of her transition from the Presidency
of Mercy High School. At this point, 166 donors
have contributed to this special scholarship.
Sr. Regina commented, “I am overwhelmed and so
grateful for the generosity of so very many people.
They have all helped make it possible for young
women to receive a Mercy education, clearly a cause
near and dear to my heart.”
THANK YOU
BARBARA TEAGAN STONE '60
Mercy High School received
a generous bequest from the
estate of Barbara Stone '60.
“We were saddened to hear
of Barbara’s death but so
warmly surprised when we
found that she remembered
us in her will,” said Mercy
President Dr. Cheryl Delaney
Kreger '66.
“Barbara was the glue that held our class together
through the years. Her drive and interest in
maintaining contact meant that we never missed a
5-year reunion. She was humorous, positive, calm,
an effective and efficient leader. Barbara loved her
time at Mercy High School and was aware of how
Mercy values affected all of our lives,” said classmate
Maryann Lanzetta Brady.
Remembering Mercy High School in your will or estate
plan is a wonderful way to leave a lasting legacy, capable
of changing the lives of young women forever. For more
information, please contact Director of Advancement
Apple Educators + 3 Mercy Teachers + 3 Mercy Classes = Cool CBL!
Apple Distinguished Educator '09 and Mercy Social Studies/English Teacher Mr. Larry Baker
submitted an application for 3 faculty members to participate in an ambitious Challenge Based
Learning K-20 Pilot Program for Apple Education. Sixty-eight schools applied, and Mercy’s team
was among 19 selected for CBL training in Dallas and participation in an extensive research project
with Apple. Universities, private, public, charter, and special needs schools were selected since
they educate a rich variety of communities. Included were two international schools (Calgary,
Melbourne), four elementary schools (VA, TX, IL, CA), four Middle Schools (HI, FL, IL, NC), five
high schools (MHS, CA, OH, NE, AZ), and four Universities (IN, OH, TX, FL). Applicants were
selected based on the school’s willingness to engage in student-centered, inquiry driven curriculum
design. A stipulation of participating was the team’s willingness to use Apple technology for the
research plan. Consequently Mercy purchased a set of iPod Touches.
The Mercy teacher team consisting of Susan Smith (Art), Carol Shea (Language), and Cathy Riley
(Science) who attended this Apple CBL Dallas training carefully plotted a terrific real-world
project to study the connections of design across curriculum. They decided to mix three extremely
different classes - Biology / French 3 / Drawing 1 - into teams to tackle the following challenge:
USE DESIGN TO IMPROVE THE CAFETERIA ENVIRONMENT.
Ms. Smith featured a challenge video with graphic documentary evidence of our cafeteria's present
plight, but also depicted inspiring designs which teased at possibilities. Mrs. Shea clearly explained
the approach of the project and Mrs. Riley started exploring the challenge with the students.
The launch event on February 1 was documented on video and the entire experience has been
completely transparent in the hope of demonstrating the value of CBL.
A total of 76 students were divided into 15 groups with girls ranging from grades 9 through 12.
These students collaborated in interdisciplinary groups through early March to work toward a
solution to their challenge. They held meetings, communicated via Google docs and Moodle using
their Tablets, recorded personal reflections and video interviews on their iTouches, conducted
online surveys, created posters, and much more to document their progress toward a solution. See
how far they’ve come by visiting mhsmi.org and Mr. Baker’s web site allcbl.com. There are many
links to the Apple CBL community site, student reflections, upcoming presentations, solutions and
more ongoing challenges from this innovative educational initiative.
“Reconnecting with Mercy through MVC was a true blessing. I worked
at Detroit Cristo Rey High School and grew to love the kids. Their stories
touched my heart. I knew each of them by name, and I will never forget
them. They helped give me the best year of my life. I am grateful that I
found MVC. Not only did I get a year of experience in my field of work,
but I grew spiritually and emotionally. I learned how to live a little bit
more simply and made best friends in my community members. I also
reconnected with the Sisters of Mercy and witnessed their good works
every day. It is an outstanding program.” - Megan Carolin '05
Mercy education has a long and rich history. It is a ministry rooted in the tradition of
Catherine McAuley. It is a ministry 180 years strong which continues through the work
of the Sisters of Mercy of the Institute of the Americas. The congregation of the Sisters
of Mercy was founded on December 12, 1831 in Dublin, Ireland by Catherine McAuley.
Catherine was born in 1778 and at the age of 40 used her inheritance to lease property on Baggot Street for
the purpose of building a large house for religious, educational, and social services for women and children.
On September 24, 1827, the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy, the first residents came to live in the house known as the
first House of Mercy. Today it is the International Center for the Mercy sisters around the globe.
Between 1829 and 1830, after prayerful deliberation and consultation with the Bishop of Dublin, Catherine
agreed to found a religious congregation of women dedicated to serving the poor, especially women
and children. She and two of her associates entered the Convent of the Presentation Sisters in Dublin on
September 8, 1830, to begin formal preparation for vowed religious life. On December 12, 1931, now known
as Foundation Day, the trio pronounced vows of poverty, chastity, obedience, and the service of the poor, sick,
and uneducated, and thus the Sisters of Mercy became a reality. After opening twelve original foundations in
Ireland and England, Catherine died at Baggot Street on November 11, 1844 at the age of 63.
We Are Called to Tell the Story
By invitation from the President of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, Sister Mary Waskowiak,
RSM, Mercy secondary and elementary schools were invited to share in a celebration of Catherine McAuley’s
journey. This observance, which commemorates the 180th anniversary of the founding of the Sisters of Mercy,
began on Mercy Day September 24, 2010 and will continue through Foundation Day December 12, 2011.
It is a focused period of learning, sharing, remembrance and recommitment to the Mercy charism, tradition,
and core values. A time to honor the vision and work of the Sisters of Mercy and their co-ministers, and to sow
seeds of Mercy for the future.
Who will tell the story? We will! Why? Because we believe in its power. Because WE ARE MERCY. This is the story
of women of faith who believe that care and compassion, prayer, and service to God through service to the
People of God is their call. It is the story of Catherine McAuley, the Sisters of Mercy and their lay colleagues, who
founded, built and staffed the schools we name as Mercy schools today. Their story is our story. Students and
staff tell the story. We pray, we serve, we educate. Graduates live the story through experience, knowledge, and
leadership. This story has the power to influence lives, to challenge all, especially the young. It offers meaning
and belonging and purpose. We will tell the story, seek to live the story, and continue to write the story in fidelity
and hope for the future.*
Mercy Ministry
Although education is but one ministry of the Sisters of Mercy, there are 41 secondary and 21 elementary Mercy
schools in the Americas. The Sisters of Mercy live and minister throughout the world: Argentina, Australia,
Bahamas, Belize, Brazil, Canada, Chili, Columbia, England, Guam, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Ireland, Italy,
Jamaica, Mexico, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Saipan, Sierra Leone, South
Africa, El Salvador, and Thailand.
180 Years of Mercy
“We pray that we will be Mercy today. We pray that we will make a difference through Mercy today. We pray that our
faith in God will continue to grow. We pray that we will believe in one another and love one another. And we pray that
we will follow in Catherine's footsteps and write the next chapter of the Mercy story. We are called to live the story of
Catherine McAuley, to serve all with mercy, justice, humility and compassion.”- Excerpt from Mercy Day Prayer 2010
