The American Indian
knew how to live in harmony
with nature. Then
along comes so-called civilized
man. We wiped out
the passenger pigeon and
the elk in the east, along
with the wolf. The buffalo
that roamed Tennessee
was also gone. We almost
lost the white tail deer and
turkeys. Now, do you
know who kept us from
losing it all? The hunters.
We pushed game laws and
limits. It wasn't the animal
rights people, not the government.
The people who
saved wildlife were the
very people who like to
hunt them. We enjoyed
the hunting so much that
we realized that to keep it
for the next generation
and those thereafter,
things had to change, and
we changed them. Our job
now is to preserve our
hunting heritage and ensure
it for all generations
to come. We pay for all
that goes on with wildlife
through licenses and taxes
on hunting items and
through clubs like Ducks
Unlimited, EIR Foundation,
Quail Unlimited, National
Wild Turkey
Foundation, and a host of
others. So hunters, stand
up and be proud and keep

In the McKee One Fish
Tournament on Tellico,
James McLemore took
home the money with a
5.65-pound fish.
The Bill Williams Bass
Tournament is March 30
out of the Canal. Early
entry fee is $110 per boat
but after the 15th it will be
$120. First place is $2,000.
The 25th Annual Irwin
Food City Tournament is
May 4 out of the Canal.
Entry fee is $225. First
place $10,000. Both start
at safe light till 3 p.m.
The Thursday night
Toqua Tournament will
start up April 4. It will run
March 21, 2013

The latest rumor to
surface in an effort to confuse
the issue and scare
the people, is that Monroe
County's Jail will be decertified,
and the state will
take over the whole project,
if a decision is not
made quickly. While I
have no doubt that both
will prove true if we don't
do I something, the implication
that those of us
supporting the downtown
location have somehow
delayed this decision is absurd.
To date, neither the
Justice Center Committee
nor any other committee
has presented the county
commission with a proposal
or recommendation
as to what to do or where
to do it.
I think we all agree that
the sheriffs and the
deputies who have served
our county over the past
50 years have given heroic
efforts to maintain our jail
and keep it operable. But
time has taken its toll and
our population has grown.
Whether we like it or not,
Monroe County needs to
build a new jail. But we
must build it with a con-

it is our belief that it is in
the best interest of our citizens,
both in the short
term and long term, to
build what is needed now,
in the downtown area of
Madisonville.
It is almost a certainty
that county commission -
the body ultimately
responsible to make this
decision – will be presented
with a recommendation
at its upcoming
meeting on Tuesday,
March 26. And while it is
readily apparent that public
opinion is on the side of
those wanting keep the jail
in downtown Madisonville,
it is very important
that we not slow our
efforts on this matter.
Every petition needs to be
filled with the signatures
of Monroe County residents
who are concerned,
and those who can should
