Oklahoma, and yes, Tennessee.
Federal and state officials
on Thursday announced
a $25 billion deal
with the nation’s largest
banks that was intended
to assist persons struggling
to pay mortgages. The
deal – a settlement – came
after evidence emerged in
2010 that banks “robosigned”
thousands of foreclosure
documents
without properly reviewing
paperwork.
Eastman Kodak announced
on Wednesday
that it would stop making
digital cameras, pocket
video cameras, and digital
picture frames by the end
IPT Cellular
of May, blaming costs and
increased expenses. The
company that invented
home photography and
the digital camera filed for
bankruptcy protection last
month.
At the same time, the
U.S. Postal Service reported
quarterly losses of
$3.3 billion on Wednesday,
projecting that by October
it would run out of
money. Agency officials
said the Postal Service had
been hurt by declining
mail volume and mounting
costs for future retiree
health benefits.
A study by the Harvard
Medical School said on
Wednesday that 11 percent
of American doctors admitted
to lying to a patient
in the past year while 20
percent admitted not fully
disclosing a mistake to a
patient because of a fear of
being sued. Some physicians
said they did not tell
their patients the whole
Another study – this
one from Tulane University
– revealed on Thursday
that some restaurant
patrons want smaller portions
of food, rather than
the “supersized” portions
available at most outlets.
Most study respondents
said that even if the downsized
meals were to cost
more they would pay the
premium for less food.
In sports, the University
of North Dakota confirmed
on Thursday it
would be retaining its
“Fighting Sioux” nickname
in spite of threats of
NCAA sanctions and a
possible legal fight that
could go all the way to the
U.S. Supreme Court.
NCAA officials said the
moniker was “insensitive”
to Native Americans while
the school touted signed
support of the name by
17,000 fans and supporters.
He then took the female’s
Officials from the European
that was discovered in the
town of Tiajomulco de Zuniga,
a suburb of the country’s
second-largest city,
Guadalajara. Officials said
the historic confiscation
was the largest ever for
Mexico.
Britain’s Daily Telegraph
newspaper said on
Thursday that although
the U.S. does not want to
crackdown on dissent in
Syria, such a move may be
unavoidable, according to
a State Department official.
Though the White
House has sought a diplomatic
solution, the debate
was shifting toward “more
robust action,” following
the deadlock over a
United Nations resolution.
The Parliament of Romania
approved on Thursday
a new government led
by former spy chief Mihai
Razvan Ungureanu,
though opposition officials
boycotted the approval.
Opponents said
they wouod contest the
selection process at the
Constitutional Court, citing
flaws in how Ungureanu
was validated.
Police officers in Wales
launched a hunt for a
been living in
dense British woods for at
Wayne Morgan, a long
haired loner, who was last
apparently survives by
hunting rabbits and foraging
In sports, the new $33
million gymnasium at the
University of East London
was reported on Thursday
as “nearly complete” as
2012 Olympics approach
this coming summer.
Around 570 U.S. athletes
and hundreds of sports
staff will use the university’s
campus, the gym,
and adjacent sports facilities
before and during the
games, including swimmer
Michael Phelps and Kobe
Bryant of the Los Angeles
And the World Wildlife
that American toilet paper
Meeting
(Continued from pg 1)
approved as read.
Patty Williford was
next on the floor, and she
gave the Project Director’s
Report.
Williford first reported
on ongoing news within
the coalition. The Teen
Recovery Meeting is continuing.
The group is
meeting every other Monday
at 5 P.M. Camp Connects
falls on the first
Thursday of the Month,
with the meeting lasting
from 3:30 P.M. till 6 P.M.
The next meeting will be
on March 1st. Local
SADD Clubs are also experiencing
a great deal of
activity in upcoming
weeks. The Club at TPHS
has submitted their plan
for the rest of the school
year, which includes: February
(design t-shirts and
develop a presentation for
middle school students),
March (visit middle school
and present), April (After-
Prom and Underage
Drinking programs), and
May (Grim Reaper and a
fun trip for SADD Club
members). The SHS
SADD Club is still completing
their overall plans,
though it does have the
following ideas in motion:
February (Pick-Me-Up
Campaign and daily facts
during the National Eating
Disorder Awareness
Week), March (oversee a
presentation to 8th
graders), April (Prom
Promise program and
speaker), and May (Grim
Reaper and a trip to Rock
City). The SADD Club of
SQHS is still seeking an
advisor, and is planning to
recruit advisors in the near
future. Currently, the Alcohol
and Drug Task
Force’s Facebook Page
boasts 828 fans. The
SQHS SADD Club Facebook
Page has 105 fans,
and the TPHS SADD
Club Facebook Page now
has 17 fans.
Williford then moved
to news from the past
month. The coalition presented
at the Synthetic
Drug Forum at Sweetwater
High School for local
parents. Williford reported
the forum had
gone very well. The coalition
also presented at the
Vonore city board meeting.
The board passed the
recommended synthetic
drug ordinance (which
makes it a civil offense to
possess or sell synthetic
drugs, or other substances
that mimic illegal drugs)
on its first reading. “This
was huge for all,” said
Williford. Another synthetic
drug resolution also
passed on its first reading
at the County Commission
meeting. The task
force has also recently
taken part in planning for
the upcoming Homeless
Count, and it completed
the FFR report for the
DFC Grant. Eleven participants
took part in the
Project Connect training,
which was hosted by the
coalition. The task force
has accepted a SAMSHA
invitation to host a town
hall meeting on underage
alcohol use. This meeting
will take place in April.
Williford also reported
that the coalition has submitted
a Power of Policy
grant with the Monroe
County Health Depart-
GUDGER BILL SAYS:
ment, participated in the
Monroe Leadership
Breakfast (and even sponsored
a table), and received
approval from the
state of Tennessee on their
donation of a Permanent
Prescription Drop Box for
the Monroe County Sheriff’s
Department. Finally,
the coalition has received
a request from McMinn,
Jackson, Overton, and
Clay Counties, asking for
help when it comes to
starting their own Camp
programs.
Williford also passed
out a schedule of the coalition’s
upcoming plans and
events, as well as national
events the coalition
closely follows. The project
director ended her report
with another
handout, this one detailing
the use of special “money.”
These “dollar bills” spread
an important message:
“For every dollar invested
in research-based substance
abuse prevention
programs, our Nation
saves approximately $10 in
addiction treatment
alone.” Williford shared a
few of these special “dollar
bills,” hoping the audience
would pass them—and
their message—along.
Following the Project
Director’s Report, the
coalition members turned
their attention to the Action
Team Reports.
First up on the agenda
was Brad Davidson, reporting
for the Teen Activities
and Role Modeling
Programs. During the
month of January, the
Teen Center had a total of
315 teen visits (7 of which
were unduplicated), provided
a total of 295 bus
rides (43 of which were
unduplicated), and served
a total of 19 days. Average
daily attendance at the
Club was 16.6. Davidson
next summarized the recent
goings-on at the
Club. The center has
started a theme called
“Your Story: The Next
Chapter,” which will push
teen center members to
think and dream about
their futures, as well as
what steps they can take
now to help in the pursuit
of those dreams. Bob
Gilley kicked off the
monthly guest speaker series
“What’s Your Story…”
The series shares community
member’s wisdom
and life experiences with
the Teen Center’s members.
the coalition the action
team is currently in the
planning stages of the
Camp Connect program.
There was no report for
the Responsive Neighborhood
turned to the
Community Awareness
Action Team. Williford reported
quarterly newsletter, sponsored
by both the Community
The coalition members
put forward several ideas
for content, including parenting
class dates, other
event dates, and highlights/education
on drugs
and alcohol. The main goal
is to bring awareness to
parents in the county.
Lacey Morgan was next
up on the agenda, with the
Parenting Programs Action
Team. She was
pleased to inform the
coalition that all twelve
the last Parenting Class
The final action team
was the Violence Prevention
Action Team. Crystal
Russell shared a handout,
detailing the current
VOCA numbers. She also
reported she had recently
taken part in a couple of
classes with Upward
were very interactive,” said
Russell, praising the students.
The Beat Goes On...
As Reported to the Officers
Madisonville Police Patrol
Officer Cody Yates
said he charged Jeffrey
Hunter of Tellico Plains
with driving on revoked license
fifth offense on Saturday,
February 4. Yates
said he was dispatched to
a vehicle that had become
stuck in a field behind a
convenience store and
there found Hunter, who
said he was a passenger in
the car, while claiming a
girlfriend had been driving.
Speaking to the girlfriend,
Yates said she
pointed out Hunter as the
driver. A constable in the
store told Yates that
Hunter had earlier come
in after the car got stuck
and admitted to being the
driver.
Monroe County Sheriff’s
Captain John Acuff
said he took a theft and
vandalism report from a
Short Bark Road resident
on February 4. The property
owner said several
items had been removed
from the residence and a
renter said the home had
sustained storm damage.
The damage was assessed
at $20,000, Acuff said.
Sheriff’s Deputy Clint
Brookshire said that on
February 4 he cited
Michael R. Zito of Tellico
Plains for operating a vehicle
with non-working
brake lights. He said he
stopped Zito’s Dodge Durango
on New Providence
Road.
Sweetwater Police Patrol
Officer James Kile
said he investigated a report
of vandalism at a Mc-
Caslin Avenue home on
February 4, finding a vehicle
owner who showed
Kile his 2011 Ford that had
been sprayed with pink
and white paint. Further
investigation, Kile said,
determined that even
more vehicles had been
painted with pink, white,
blue, and silver paint and a
granular substance. The
vehicles were all on Mc-
Caslin Avenue and included
late-model Fords
and a Toyota and Hyundai,
plus earlier model
Chryslers, Fords, Jeeps,
Hondas, and Dodges.
Sheriff’s Captain Travis
Jones said he charged
Stephanie Joy Hubbard of
Sweetwater with public intoxication
on Sunday, February
5, encountering her
on foot on Oakland Road.
She was unsteady, smelled
of alcohol, and performed
sobriety testing poorly,
Jones said.
Sheriff’s Deputy Chase
Nipper said he responded
to a theft report at a home
on Old Mine Road on
February 5, learning that a
motorcycle had been
taken from an outdoor
garage. A battery and a
key were also missing,
Nipper said.
Nipper also checked
out an alleged burglary on
Reed Springs Road on
February 5. A resident said
his home had been entered
through a kicked-in
back door and the home
alarm was blaring. Missing
were three bottles of
liquor from the refrigerator,
the homeowner said,
plus a $200 flat screen television.
Monroe County Sheriff’s
Deputy Jason Russell
said he met with a homeowner
from Madisonville
on Monday, February 6, to
take an attack of a home
theft. The victim named a
male who took her highlift
and two hay balers from
her property in mid January.
The highlift was valued
at $500 and the balers
at $15,000, Russell noted.
Sheriff’s Sergeant
James Wall said he spoke
with a Sweetwater storage-building
renter on
February 6, learning from
her that the building had
been breached by tearing
away iron bars from its
window. Stolen, the victim
said, was copper
wiring, two grinders, vari-
Sheriff’s Sergeant Doug
Mills said he was dispatched
to Sawmill Road
on February 6 to look into
a theft that reportedly had
taken place several days
earlier. A property owner
told Mills that someone
took $300 worth of batteries
and destroyed $200
worth of battery cables.
Mills also responded to
a Tellico Plains home on
February 6 to validate several
reported stolen items
from a female’s purse. The
female said when she
awoke she found her purse
The player was worth
$100, the owner said.
Fischer said he responded
numbers pertaining to his
firearms,” the detective division
said. “We were able
to use one of the numbers
to locate the missing items
and reclaim the property.”
The case investigation
would be continuing, the
division said, and charges
are pending. A suspect has
been identified.
“It is vital that everyone
keep serial numbers relating
to all items of value,”
Sheriff Bill Bivens said. “It
increases our detectives’
chances of finding, indentifying,
and returning
stolen property.”
The detective division
recommended taking pictures
of all valuable property,
including electronics
such as computers, televisions,
and cameras, plus
jewelry, tools, equipment,
musical instruments, and
weapons. Then put the
pictures and a list of the
serial numbers in a safe
place, such as a computer
flash drive or a bank lock
box.
number list and pictures at
home, where a fire, theft,
or other misfortune could
result in the information
being lost.
“With jewelry, such as
rings, use a dark background
such as a black
cloth and place a ruler or
quarter in the picture for
size reference,” the division
said. “Kids, by the
way, are a great help in
compiling the numbers,
lists, and pictures, because
it’s a fun adventure for
them and a great way to
spent a rainy Saturday afternoon.”
Charged by Madisonville
Police Captain Detective
Daniel Dockery
with possession of Schedule
Justin Chad Carroll, 27, of
Henry Drive, Madisonville.
Dockery said he spotted
Carroll leaving a local
business and checking
Carroll’s status learned
that Carroll was wanted
for an active warrant out
of McMinn County for violation
of probation.
Placing Carroll under
arrest for the warrant,
Dockery began a search of
Carroll’s person and found
