Harold E. Dunlap, MD, FACS (S’58), of Durham,<br />
NC, writes that he is a retired general surgeon, reminding<br />
us that he was a fellow 50 years ago! He<br />
recalled George Crile Jr., MD (S’37), Stanley O. Hoerr,<br />
MD, and Rupert B. Turnbull, Jr, MD (S’48,’49),<br />
and adds, “How privileged I was!”<br />

Caldwell B. Esselstyn Jr., MD (GL-1’62, S’66). See<br />

70s<br />
John Bergfeld, MD (GL-1’65, S’67, ORS’70), who<br />
served as team doctor for the <strong>Cleveland</strong> Browns<br />
from 1976 to 2002 and currently is Director of<br />
Operating Rooms at <strong>Cleveland</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>, received the<br />
Dino Lucarelli Lifetime Achievement Award from<br />
the Northeast Ohio Chapter of the National Football<br />
Foundation and College Hall of Fame on May 11. Dr.<br />
Bergfeld also served as team doctor for the <strong>Cleveland</strong><br />
Cavaliers from 1986 to 2001 and has held that<br />
position with Baldwin-Wallace College since 1996.<br />
A consultant for both the Browns and Cavaliers, Dr.<br />
Bergfeld recently was inducted into the American<br />
Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine Hall of Fame.<br />
Victor W. Fazio, MD (S’73, CRS’74), Chair, <strong>Cleveland</strong><br />
<strong>Clinic</strong> Digestive Disease Institute, who holds the<br />
Rupert B. Turnbull, MD, Chair in Colorectal Surgery,<br />
has been named an honorary fellow of The Royal<br />
College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), its highest<br />
award, for his contributions to the education of Irish<br />
surgeons. Dr. Fazio has mentored at least 10 Irish<br />
surgeons, several of whom have been able to return<br />
to Ireland to share their knowledge and experiences.<br />
RCSI is one of the foremost medical institutions and<br />
is a part of the National University of Ireland.<br />
Thomas Hoogland, MD (S’75, ORS’78), most recently<br />
chairman of Spine Surgery at Alpha <strong>Clinic</strong><br />
in Munich, Germany, writes that he and his wife,<br />
Antje, moved to Chateau Le Bierson in Marcay,<br />
France, in April.<br />
David A. Ingis, MD, FACG (GE’74), has left clinical<br />
practice after 34 years in Willingboro, NJ, and is now<br />
a <strong>Clinic</strong>al Associate Professor of Medicine at the University<br />
of Pennsylvania at Penn Presbyterian Medical<br />
Center in the Gastroenterology Department. He<br />
is doing some teaching, which he enjoys, as well as<br />
continuing to practice gastroenterology and hepatology.<br />
He and his wife, Judith, live in Moorestown, NJ,<br />
and have three children, Elisa, Stuart and Lauren.<br />

D. Karl Montague, MD (GL-1’69, S’70, U’73), Director<br />
of the Center for Genitourinary Reconstruction<br />
in <strong>Cleveland</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>’s Glickman Urological and<br />
Kidney Institute, is one of only 11 program directors<br />
in the nation to receive the Parker J. Palmer<br />
Courage to Teach Award. This distinction, which<br />
is granted yearly by the Accreditation Council for<br />
Graduate Medical Education, honors outstanding<br />
teachers and leaders in graduate medical education.<br />
Dr. Montague was Program Director for the<br />
urology residents from 1985 to 2006, and continues<br />
his involvement in the education of future urologists<br />
as Associate Program Director. In total, he has been<br />
actively involved in leading the educational program<br />
for 33 years, one of the longest tenures in residency<br />
education for the surgical disciplines in the country.<br />
Over the course of Dr. Montague’s tenure, almost<br />
100 urology residents have graduated, and the program<br />
has become one of the premier urology training<br />
programs in the world.<br />
Sandra L. Riegler, MD, MPH (IM’76, ID’77), has<br />
retired from her university-based Internal Medicine<br />
practice and is now a preceptor for the University<br />
of Cincinnati Medicine Resident <strong>Clinic</strong>. She says,<br />
“Our annual Medical Mission to Amazonas, Brazil,<br />
(Amazonas Hope for Health) is now in its 15 th year,<br />
bringing together volunteers, physicians, nurses<br />
and students to deliver medical care and health<br />
education.” She adds that it is “fun and gratifying!”<br />
David G. Van Sickle, MD (IM’69, GE’70), who is<br />
retired in Portland, OR, wrote that he is very active<br />
in his local church and a railway historical group<br />
and also volunteers at a local hospital, greeting and<br />
helping patients and visitors.<br />
John “Jack” A. Vanek, MD (DR’78), announces the<br />
publication of his full-length book of poems, Heart<br />
Murmurs. “Have no fear, non-poetry people. Think<br />
of these poems as really, really short stories,” he<br />
says. Dr. Vanek’s passion for creative writing took<br />
root during his undergraduate studies at Case<br />
Western Reserve University. He received his medi-<br />

Jack Vanek, MD<br />
Gene H. Barnett, MD (S’81, NS’86), Director of<br />
<strong>Cleveland</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>’s Brain Tumor and Neuro-Oncology<br />
Center/Gamma Knife Center, has been named Associate<br />
Dean of Faculty Affairs for the <strong>Cleveland</strong><br />
<strong>Clinic</strong> Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western<br />
Reserve University.<br />
Gordon R. Bell, MD (GL-1’78, ORS’82), Section<br />
Head of Spine Surgery in the Department of Orthopaedics<br />
and staff member in the Department<br />
of Neurology at <strong>Cleveland</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>, has been named<br />
Director of the Center for Spine Health.<br />
David A. Bitonte, DO, MBA, MPH (PM’87), has<br />
been appointed a <strong>Clinic</strong>al Assistant Professor at<br />
Northeast Ohio University College of Medicine in the<br />
Department of Community Health Sciences. He is<br />
Public Health Medical Officer for the City of Akron<br />
Health Department.<br />

Craig R. Irish, MD (GL-1’77, DR’80), was named<br />
Fairview Hospital’s 2009 Physician of the Year.<br />
Fairview Hospital is a <strong>Cleveland</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> hospital on<br />
<strong>Cleveland</strong>’s west side. Nominated by members of<br />
the Fairview Hospital medical staff and selected by<br />
his peers, Dr. Irish was presented with his award<br />
at a dinner-dance held in his honor on March 21.<br />
More than 240 people attended to see Dr. Irish receive<br />
the award, presented by Frank Ricaurte, MD,<br />
Chair of the Department of Radiology, who noted<br />
that Dr. Irish is the son and nephew of <strong>Cleveland</strong>area<br />
radiologists. Dr. Irish joined the Fairview staff<br />
in 1980; has served as chair of the Department of<br />
Radiology and currently is Chair of the Credentials<br />
Committee. He is past President of the Northeast<br />
Ohio Ultrasound Society and the <strong>Cleveland</strong> Radiological<br />
Society. Dr. Irish and his wife, Kim, have two<br />
daughters and a granddaughter.
