Release of <strong>toluene</strong> to land may occur in association with<br />
gasoline spills, leaking underground gasoline storage<br />
tanks, or land disposal of municipal sludges or refinery<br />
wastes [904].<br />
Although, in some cases, releases might be significant<br />
on a local scale, the total amount of <strong>toluene</strong> released to<br />
the environment in soil is considered to be negligible<br />
[904]. Industrial releases to land reported to the TRI<br />
for 1990 were about 0.27 million pounds; this is 0.16% of<br />
the total environmental release [904]. Another 38<br />
million pounds were transferred to offsite landfills<br />
[904]. The TRI data should be used with caution since<br />
only certain types of facilities are required to report<br />
[904].<br />
