I\LF excursion to Iceland 1997 The NlF-excursion n 1997 will be arranged in Iceland. It will be held in the period 8th to L2th August in Eidar, eastern lceland. Eidar is situated about 20 km north of Egilsstadir. The place is selected for easy access to the main birch woods of Iceland at Hallormssta0ur and Egilsstadir, and because of short distances to both oceanic and relatively continental areas. Besides the birch woods, the eastern coast and coastal mountains will be visited as well as inland heaths towards the central highland. Cetrelia olivetorum is represented by two chemotypes in Norway, one with perlatolic acid and one with olivetoric acid as major substances. The perlatolic acid chemotype is widely distributed in inland and in coastal areas of southern Norway. Of the specimens of the olivetoric acid chemotype 95 % occur in intand and 5 % (one specimen) in costal areas. The chemotypes can not with certainty be recogntzed on morphology alone. According to Culberson & Culberson (197 6) , see also Randlane and Saag (1991), Cetrelia olivetorum s. lat. is represented by four chemotypes in Europe: (1) Perlatolic (major) and imbricaric acids, (2) imbricaric (major) and perlatolic acids, (3) olivetoric acid, and (4) cr-collatolic and alectoronic acids; these are given specific rank as C. cetrarioides (Duby) W. Culb. & C. Culb., C. monochorum (Zahlbr.) W. Culb. & C. Culb., C. olivetorum (Nyl.) W. Culb. & C. Culb., and C. chicitae (W. Culb.) W. Culb. & C. Culb., respectively. Purvis (1992) recognizes C. olivetorum as one species with three chemotypes in Great Britain: One with imbricaric acid with perlatolic acid as an accessory, one with olivetoric acid, and one with alectoronic and cr-collatolic acids; no information is given on the relative concentration of the substances in the imbricaric acid/perlatolic acid chemotype. In Norway, two chemotypes of C. olivetorum have been recognized, one with perlatolic acid and one with olivetoric acid (see Krog et al. L994, which, with respect to Cetrelia, ts largely based on Jorgensen & Ryvarden 1969). Up to 1969, about 90 Norwegian specimens of C. olivetorumhad been collected; i.e. less than one half of the specimens available today. Since the number of collections has increased considerably, and the chromatographic technique used by Jorgensen & Ryvarden (1969) does not equal those currently used (Jorgensen pers. comm. 1996), we find it appropriate to present the results of a recent chemical study of C. olivetorum in Norway. Materials and methods The study includes all material from Norway in BG, C, NLH, O, S, TRH and UpS, altogether 196 collections. In packets which apparently contained samples of more than one thallus, several samples were studied and when different chemotypes were found, they were counted as representing distinct specimens. The material was analysed by high performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) according to Arup er al. (1993) except that the extracts were applied by hand (not by a nanomat) using capillary tubes (1.3-1.5 mm in diameter).
