Annaba <strong>on</strong> lichens, urbanizati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> industrializati<strong>on</strong> are influencing the flora, despite the<br />

evident lack of a lichen desert in the city centre. Behaviour of some species clearly differed<br />

from that shown by them in north-east Europe. Three categories of lichens are listed:<br />

polluti<strong>on</strong>-resistant, medium-resistant, <strong>and</strong> poleophobes.]<br />

mainly beech, form the basis of m<strong>on</strong>itoring carried out at 5-year intervals. Four categories<br />

of synergistic emissi<strong>on</strong> impact were established, <strong>and</strong> found preferable to numerical values<br />

<strong>and</strong> formulae in comm<strong>on</strong> use elsewhere.]<br />

Their advantages are: geographic spread, all-year availability, lack of seas<strong>on</strong>al morphological<br />

variability, slowness of growth <strong>and</strong> well tried <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ardized methodologies.<br />

Disadvantages are: difficulty of laboratory culture, unavailability of genetically uniform<br />

material, lichen SO 2 -sensitivity, <strong>and</strong> the impossibility of aging different parts of the thallus.<br />

In Europe the most comm<strong>on</strong>ly used m<strong>on</strong>itor is Hypogymnia physodes.]<br />

Woods, R.G. (1993) Flora of Radnorshire. Cardiff: Nati<strong>on</strong>al Museum of Wales. [Atmospheric<br />

polluti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> lichens are discussed in a short secti<strong>on</strong> (: 217-218). 'The present widespread<br />

abundance of Usnea species suggests that sulphur dioxide levels are still fairly low. Yet there<br />

is accumulating evidence to suggest that sulphur <strong>and</strong> nitrogen are exerting a c<strong>on</strong>siderable<br />

influence <strong>on</strong> many lichen communities in Radnorshire.' Lobari<strong>on</strong> col<strong>on</strong>ies close to the<br />

Radnor border are am<strong>on</strong>g the slowest-growing in Britain. 'Extincti<strong>on</strong> of the Lobari<strong>on</strong> seems<br />

lichens used were Clad<strong>on</strong>ia sp. <strong>and</strong> Cetraria sp. There are maps of Cu, Ni <strong>and</strong> Sr<br />

accumulati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>and</strong> table of metal levels in Clad<strong>on</strong>ia <strong>and</strong> mosses.]<br />
