Up and Running: A Basic REAPER User Guide
1.17 REAPER File Types
Like any other software program, REAPER creates a series of files that it uses to store your work. The main file
types and their purpose are described in the table below, along with other useful information.
File Type Example Explanation
.RPP
REAPER Project File
.RPP-bak
Project Backup File
.RPP-UNDO
Undo History File
.reapeaks
REAPER Peaks File
.reapindex
REAPER Peaks File
Brad Sucks.RPP This file is the core of your project. It holds all the
information about your tracks and their settings.
.RPP files are stored in text format and can be opened and
examined using any text editor. In general, however, this
is not recommended practice, unless you are encountering
a serious issue with the file and you need to examine this.
Brad Sucks.RPP-bak Each time you resave your project file, the previous version
is renamed and saved with the .RPP-bak extension. This
ensures that if you get into difficulty, you can recover your
project from its previous state by opening the project
backup file.
To do this, simply double-click on the backup file name in
Windows Explorer. This will cause REAPER to open with
the backup file as a new file, which you can then save.
Brad Sucks.RPP-UNDO This optional file type will be created if you select the
option to save your undo history with your project files.
This option is included in the Undo Settings section of
the General settings in your Options, Preferences
window. This topic is explained more fully later in this
guide.
As long as you do not delete this text file, you will be able
to restore your project at will to any earlier state, even if
that is a state that existed days, weeks or even months
earlier.
Guitar.wav.reapeaks Your reapeaks files contain the information necessary to
enable REAPER to draw the waveforms etc on your media
items.
Guitar.wav.reapindex These files also contain information about your individual
media items.
