Admissions Office<br />

Admissions is your first-stop at <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> <strong>College</strong>, where staff can assist students with questions<br />

or concerns about getting started, admissions advisement, the student ambassador program, and<br />

campus tours. Students can also apply for admission or pick up and submit required forms at the<br />

Office of Admissions.<br />

In addition to these services, the Office of Admissions manages ask<strong>Santa</strong><strong>Fe</strong>, your online source<br />

Advisement Center<br />

The Advisement Center is located at R-201 (NW Campus) where advisors provide Associate of<br />

Arts (AA) degree seeking students with direction, information, guidance, and support as they<br />

pursue their AA degree program. Whether students need to complete an educational plan, are<br />

interested in changing majors, need help completing petitions, want clarification of general<br />

education, graduation, or transfer requirements, need guidance with choosing courses for the<br />

next semester—whatever assistance they need to reach their educational goals, our advisors are<br />

here to help.<br />

Athletics, Intramurals, Gymnasium and Fitness Center<br />

<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> <strong>College</strong> fields intercollegiate teams in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s baseball,<br />

and women’s softball. Additionally, there are opportunities for student involvement in a variety<br />

of intramural sports. An on-campus Fitness Center is located in V building and is open weekdays<br />

from 6:30am until 9pm, except for Fridays when closes at 6pm.<br />

The History of intercollegiate athletics at SFC<br />

<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> <strong>College</strong> began competing on the intercollegiate level in 1979-80.<br />

SFC is a member of the Mid-Florida Conference. Other members of the MFC include Central<br />

Florida CC, Daytona Beach CC, Florida CC at Jacksonville, Lake Sumter CC, Seminole CC and<br />

St. Johns River CC.<br />

SFC intercollegiate athletics is affiliated with the Florida Community <strong>College</strong> Activities<br />

Association and the National Junior <strong>College</strong> Athletic Association.<br />

Men’s basketball and baseball, women’s basketball and fast pitch softball are presently the four<br />

intercollegiate sports provided at SFC.<br />

Exercise your body and your mind<br />

SFC offers all students the use of a fully equipped Fitness Center. The SFC fitness staff provides<br />

one on one instruction on the use of our aerobic equipment, free weights and Cybex resistance<br />

machines.<br />

Individual fitness programs are available for students, staff and faculty of SFC. Individual fitness<br />

testing ranging from body composition to cardio respiratory fitness is available by appointment.<br />

SFC Intramural Competition<br />

<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers intramural sport programs for SFC students throughout the fall and<br />

spring semesters.<br />

Among other activities, Flag football is offered during the fall semester. Flag football teams play<br />

their games at the soccer field on the southeast corner of campus.<br />

SFC offers volleyball and basketball during the spring semester. Both programs play all games at<br />

the SFC gymnasium.<br />

Weightlifting events are offered during both the fall and spring semesters.<br />

A SFC intramural information and signup bulletin board is located across from room V-01 in the<br />

SFC gymnasium.<br />

Intramural programs are provided to encourage SFC students to participate in competitive and<br />

healthy activities as a way of enhancing their college experience.<br />

Career and Job Placement Services<br />

This is a practical, hands-on service that helps students find a job and gives tips on getting the<br />

job. Through Job Placement students learn to develop a resume, polish their interview skills and<br />

go about landing a job. We have a comprehensive job database in the office and students can find<br />

It’s hard to make choices when you don’t know what the choices are. But there are so many<br />

career choices that no one can know about all of them. The Career Resource Center is here to<br />

help. We have computerized assessments, which show how career options relate to your<br />

interests, skills, values and personality.<br />

We have resources to help you learn about possible career fields including salaries, job market,<br />

training requirements, other schools, and much more.<br />

Child Care Scholarships<br />

<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers a limited number of childcare Scholarships each semester to full-time<br />

SFC students. The scholarships are available for children from 14 months to 5 years of age. The<br />

award criteria are as follows:<br />

1. Enrolled full-time at SFC during the scholarship period;<br />

2. Satisfactory academic standing;<br />

3. Statement of needs;<br />

4. Financial need (complete documentation required).<br />

Counseling Center<br />

Advice about many areas of student's life: We can help with anxiety about math or tests, study<br />

tips, choice of a career and majors, personal problems with family, relationships, stress,<br />

motivation, ability to communicate and adjustment to college life. Students may stop by the<br />

Alcohol and Drug Awareness Education<br />

If a student has a problem with substance abuse, or wants to help someone such as another<br />

student who does, the Counseling Center can provide general helpful information as well as<br />

make referrals to helpful agencies in the community. Students may stop by the receptionist desk<br />

Dental Clinic<br />

Maintain your smile by visiting the <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> <strong>College</strong> Dental Clinic, where you receive oral care<br />

provided by dental hygiene students under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist and<br />

hygienist. Services available include the review of medical history, vital signs, complete head<br />

and neck exam, teeth cleaning, x-rays, sealants, amalgam polishes and a caries check – your<br />

complete dental checkup. For additional care, you may be referred to a dentist. Call the clinic in<br />

Disabilities Resource Center<br />

Students with disabilities are encouraged to contact the Disabilities Resource Center (DRC) in<br />

Building S, Room 229, and 395-4400. This office works with the individual student with a<br />

disability to provide reasonable accommodation and counseling for disability related issues. The<br />

Disabilities Resource Center also assists in arranging for adaptive equipment and assistive<br />

Displaced Homemakers<br />

The Displaced Homemaker Program: Focus on the Future offers employment assistance to<br />

homemakers who are 35 years of age or older, who have been dependent upon someone for<br />

support which is no longer available to them, who are unemployed or not adequately employed<br />

and who would have difficulty in securing adequate employment. The program offers free<br />

classes and workshops throughout the year with regard to:<br />

• Life Management Skills including self esteem building, stress management, assertive<br />

communication skills, time management, problem solving and goal setting<br />

• Employability Skills including applications, resume development, interview techniques,<br />

professional image, job search plans and job retention<br />

Diversity and Outreach Programs<br />

*CAP is a six-week academic enrichment experience that occurs each summer. It is administered<br />

by the Office of Diversity. CAP provides diverse groups of recently graduated high school<br />

students with the opportunity to obtain critical academic instruction and skills to enhance<br />

college-readiness and placement requirements. Students selected to participate in CAP, must<br />

complete a program application and plan to enroll full-time at <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> <strong>College</strong> (SFC).<br />

Interviews are conducted at Alachua and Bradford counties high schools during the spring of the<br />

student’s senior year. High school students who want to know more about CAP are encouraged<br />

to speak with their Guidance Counselors.<br />

ESL Program<br />

The ESL (English as a Second Language) program is located in I-001.This program is designed<br />

for students whose limited English language skills would hamper their success in any SFC<br />

Program. Students for whom English is a second language are encouraged to work in this<br />

program until their language proficiency is improved. Students and instructors may contact the<br />

ESL Learning Lab at 395-5055 for additional information concerning this program.<br />

Financial Aid<br />

<strong>Fe</strong>deral, state and institutional funding are three sources of financial aid at SFC. Awards are<br />

made on an academic year basis and the amount of assistance is determined by individual need,<br />

student eligibility, and availability of funds. SFC's Board of Trustees makes a number of<br />

scholarship awards to outstanding students. These include, but not limited to, scholarships in the<br />

following areas: Academic, Athletic, Creative Arts, Honors and Speech/Debate. In addition,<br />

there are privately funded scholarships offered to SFC students by <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong>'s Endowment<br />

Corporation. Inquiries should be directed to the Scholarships Office, telephone 395-5470, Room<br />

Students are encouraged to apply for financial aid by March 15, for the following academic year.<br />

Health Sciences Pilot for Success<br />

The Health Sciences Pilot for Success program is a federally funded Perkins grant project<br />

designed to provide academic support services to students enrolled in Health Sciences Programs<br />

or taking required prerequisites towards application to a program. Pilot provides tutoring,<br />

academic advisement, campus referrals and mentoring services to eligible students. In addition,<br />

Pilot works directly with faculty and conducts academic skill presentations each semester in<br />

various Health Sciences classes. Pilot selects tutors from among current high achieving students<br />

in Nursing and other Health Sciences Programs. Pilot for Success services are available to<br />

students free of charge.<br />

Health Sciences Counseling Office (HSCO)<br />

The Health Sciences Counseling Office (HSCO) provides recruitment and advisement services<br />

for the Health Sciences Programs and Sciences for Health Programs. It is the initial contact<br />

office for individuals interested in health professions – Cardiovascular Technology, Cardiac<br />

Electrophysiology, Computed Tomography, Dental Assisting, Dental Hygiene/Hygiene Bridge,<br />

Nuclear Medicine Technology, Practical Nursing, Registered Nursing, Registered Nursing<br />

Bridge (LPN to RN and Paramedic to RN ) , Radiography, Respiratory Care, and Surgical<br />

Technology. The Office offers academic and career advisement to students; leads recruitment<br />

efforts for the programs; and provides student support services such as promotion of endowment<br />

scholarships. The Counseling Office is located in the lobby of the Health Sciences Building W,<br />

Room 002.<br />

The Health Sciences Counseling Office is responsible for maintaining Health Sciences applicant<br />

files and notification letters. The advisement Specialists register all students enrolled in Health<br />

Sciences Programs. HSCO staff work closely with Health Sciences and Sciences for Health<br />

Programs faculty and leadership. HSCO sponsors a campus Health and Wellness Fair and Health<br />

Sciences Career Placement Day each year.<br />

Honors Program<br />

The Honors Program offers a select group of highly motivated students with outstanding records<br />

the challenges and benefits of small classes that emphasize creative and critical thinking. Visit<br />

the Honors Program web site for more information about the program and scholarship<br />

Upon completion of the program requirements, students receive an Honors Certificate, special<br />

designation on their transcripts, and recognition at graduation.<br />

In order to complete the Program, students must complete 15-credit hours of Honors Program<br />

courses and maintain a 3.5 GPA.<br />

ADMISSION:<br />

Current students are invited into the program according to the following criteria:<br />

a 3.5 academic GPA and a minimum of 12 credit hours in appropriate course work<br />

at SFC<br />

two supporting signatures from faculty, and/or<br />

approval by the Honors Program Coordinator<br />

Incoming students with strong high school records and test scores are also accepted.<br />

A.S. and transfer students who are interested in Honors courses are encouraged to<br />

Honor Society<br />

Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society for the two-year <strong>College</strong>. The purpose of Phi<br />

Theta Kappa is the recognition and encouragement of scholarship among two-year college<br />

students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa provides opportunity for the development of<br />

leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for the exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively<br />

fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.<br />

Membership is by invitation. For eligibility, a student must achieve a minimum 3.50 grade point<br />

average on all course work attempted at this college with at least 12 earned credit hours. <strong>College</strong><br />

Prep courses do not count as courses attempted for the requirements.<br />

International Students<br />

<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> <strong>College</strong> (SFC) has an Office of International Student Services (ISS). It is maintained to<br />

assist international students in making the transition from their native lands and educational<br />

systems to SFC. The staff will gladly assist students with F-1 student immigration regulations,<br />

health insurance information, personal problems, and other areas of concern. No housing is<br />

provided on the SFC campus. The Office of International Student Services is unable to make<br />

rental reservations, negotiate lease agreements, or act as an agent for the student. Referral<br />

information is made available solely to aid students in their search for housing. Unless you are a<br />

United States Citizen or have a United States Permanent Resident Card you must apply using the<br />

online international student application and admission requirements. International students<br />

LAWRENCE W TYREE LIBRARY<br />

The Lawrence W. Tyree Library is committed to service, offering highest quality resources and<br />

library instruction for students, faculty and staff. The library team will help you explore and use<br />

the reference collection, books, magazines, electronic databases, multimedia materials, Internet<br />

sites and more. All resources are accessible through the library website at<br />

Resources include 89,545 volumes, 462 periodical titles, 98 databases, 142 public computers, 8<br />

small and 2 large group study rooms, 17 preview areas for VHS and DVD media, 1 DRC<br />

workstation with adaptive technologies – scanner, magnifier and software.<br />

Your SFC ID card is your library card. You may obtain your ID/library card from S-147, the<br />

Student Activities Office in the Wattenbarger Building. Normal working hours are 8 a.m. - 4:30<br />

p.m.; additional evening hours vary by term. Call 395-5912 to confirm that cards are being made.<br />

Please present your current fee slip (stamped "Paid") and a picture ID (driver’s license, passport,<br />

etc.) when requesting your ID/library card. The ID/library card is free. If you lose your card,<br />

there is a $5.00 replacement cost for duplicate cards.<br />

Use your card to check out books and materials on Reserve and to access eBooks and My<br />

Account from the Library Catalog. Your Borrower ID number is your 8 digit SFC ID number,<br />

without the hyphen. Your PIN is the last 4 digits of this number. If you wish, you can change<br />

your PIN to another 4 digit number within My Account. If you need assistance accessing library<br />

resources using these numbers, please call the Circulation Desk at 395-5412.<br />

If you are on a <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> computer on campus, you can access the library’s Electronic Databases<br />

from the library website. If you are not on a <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> computer, access the library databases<br />

through e<strong>Santa</strong><strong>Fe</strong> under “Other.”<br />

Handouts are available in the Library and on the website to help you find the information you<br />

need, and Reference Librarians are always available to assist you. For more information on<br />

The Lawrence W. Tyree Library has ample study areas on all three floors. There are group study<br />

rooms on the second floor, computers for students on all three floors, two classrooms, and a cafe.<br />

Socializing is limited to the first floor, and cell phone usage is limited to the first two floors. The<br />

eference area is on the second floor, and the entire third floor is a quiet study area. To keep our<br />

library "new," food is allowed only in the cafe. All beverages must be in spill-proof containers.<br />

Library services include orientation, reference assistance, circulation, interlibrary loans and<br />

course reserves. Library instruction is provided one-on-one as needed. Librarians will also do<br />

tailored subject presentations to classes when requested by faculty.<br />

The library also offers three 1 credit courses: LIS1001, “Library Print Resources,” LIS 1002,<br />

"Electronic Access to Information," and LIS 2004, "Introduction to Internet Research." LIS 1001<br />

is exclusively an onsite course. LIS 1002 and LIS 2004 are available both onsite and through<br />

Open Campus.<br />

Leadership Institute<br />

The purpose of the Leadership Institute is to educate, train and encourage individuals within the<br />

campus environment and in the community about leadership theory, principles, and practices.<br />

The Institute serves as a resource for students, faculty, staff, and administrators on campus, as<br />

well as, individuals and businesses within the community to develop and enhance their<br />

leadership skills.<br />

This purpose is fulfilled through a variety of mechanisms. The Leadership Institute presents<br />

seminars on leadership principles each semester. The Leadership Institute offers six separate<br />

classes on leadership for college credit: SLS1265, SLS1266, SLS1269, all one credit courses;<br />

SLS 1260, a two credit course; SLS2261, the three credits Phi Theta Kappa leadership<br />

curriculum, and SLS2262, a practicum in student leadership.<br />

The <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> <strong>College</strong> Leadership Institute is located within the Center for Student Leadership<br />

Little School<br />

The Little school is a parent-child center, which offers a developmental program for children of<br />

ages 14 months to 5 years. Although Little School is a service to <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> <strong>College</strong> students, staff,<br />

and faculty, enrollment is not limited to the campus population; rather it is open to the<br />

community. The program provides, toddler, and preschool care for the financially-able as well as<br />

for those requiring assistance. A limited number of child care scholarships are available for full<br />

time SFC students. One of the goals of the center is to assist student-parents to achieve and<br />

sustain self-sufficiency.<br />

The Multicultural Student Center, located in S-137, provides services to International and<br />

Multicultural Students enrolled at <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> <strong>College</strong>. To create a positive, supportive, and<br />

learning-centered environment, students are assisted with a variety of services including:<br />

academic counseling and advisement, study skills, the career decision making process, cultural<br />

Open Campus<br />

The Open Campus offers students the convenience and flexibility of attending college via the<br />

internet. Classes are web-based although some materials are available on CD-ROM, books and<br />

videotapes. The class calendar (start date...end date) is the same as for traditional, campus-based<br />

courses. The course fees are the same as for regular classes however there is a $10 per credit<br />

Student Health Care Center<br />

<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong>’s Student Health Care Center, a collaborative venture between <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> <strong>College</strong> and the<br />

University of Florida, was opened to help meet the educational and medical needs of <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong><br />

students. The Center is active in promoting a wellness lifestyle, which encompasses and<br />

individual’s physical, emotional, environmental, social, and spiritual health. The Center is staffed<br />

by a Registered Nurse and a Nurse Practitioner. No appointment is necessary to be seen by the<br />

RN, except for HIV testing. However, an appointment is necessary to see the Nurse Practitioner.<br />

Services are available to <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> students only. Hours are 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m.<br />

STUDENT LIFE<br />

Student Life exists to create and support opportunities for student involvement in campus and<br />

community activities, and is housed in the Center for Student Leadership and Activities and the<br />

<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> Gym. Information about all Student Life programs and current events on campus may<br />

CENTER FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP & ACTIVITIES<br />

The Center for Student Leadership & Activities, located in the Wattenbarger Student Services<br />

Building (S Building), includes Student Government, student organizations, the Leadership<br />

Institute, the Multicultural Student Center, Student Legal Services, the Office of Community<br />

Service, and the Student Health Care Center.<br />

Funding and support for intercollegiate athletics, intramurals, the fitness center, and fine arts<br />

programming are also provided through the Student Life.<br />

Offices for Student Government and the many student organizations are located within the<br />

Center for Student Leadership and Activities. The center also houses a recreation room, a TV<br />

room, computer workstations, and student meeting rooms.<br />

The services provided within the Center include: student identification cards, public notary,<br />

access to FAX machine, a computer lab with printer, TI-83 calculator loans, and other equipment<br />

loans. The Center is open from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8:00 a.m. – 4:30<br />

STUDENT GOVERNMENT<br />

Student Government (SG) is the representative body for students at <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> Community<br />

<strong>College</strong>. It provides students a voice to the <strong>College</strong> administration through active participation in<br />

institutional decision-making. SG is comprised of three branches: the Executive Board, the<br />

Student Senate, and Student Government Programming.<br />

The Executive Board is elected each spring by the student body and charged with the overall<br />

administration of SG. The four executive board officers and the executive cabinet oversee a large<br />

number of committees representing students’ interests to the <strong>College</strong> administration.<br />

The Student Senate is comprised of academic and at-large senator members representing the<br />

general student populace plus representatives from student organizations. As the legislative body<br />

for SG, the Senate votes on resolutions and fund allocations, and approves charters for new<br />

student organizations. Student Senators are often called on to serve on <strong>College</strong> committees,<br />

ranging from the Bookstore Advisory committee and International Education committee to the<br />

<strong>College</strong> Budget Advisory Board and Sustainability committee. Senate meetings are held each<br />

Wednesday, at 4:00 pm in S-29/30 and are open to everyone.<br />

Student Government Programming Board (SGP) puts on large-scale programs open to all<br />

students. A sampling of programs planned for the year includes Casino Night, movie nights, live<br />

concerts, Safe Spring Break, Black History Month block party, and a trip to Universal Studios<br />

Halloween Horror Night. SGP meetings are held each Tuesday, at 3:30 pm in S-141 and are open<br />

to everyone.<br />

Currently enrolled students with at least a 2.0 cum GPA are invited to become involved today.<br />

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS<br />

<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong>’s student organizations come in all shapes and sizes and cover a variety of academic<br />

and special interests. Several groups cater specifically to students in Health Sciences. These<br />

include: Cardiovascular Technology Student Association (CVTSA), Nursing Student<br />

Association (NSA), Pre-Professional Students Organization, Respiratory Care Club, and X-Ray<br />

@ <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong>. Besides these academic-oriented organizations, more than 50 other student<br />

organizations are open to all interested <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> students. A complete listing of student<br />

Student Support Services<br />

Student Support Services is a part of the Student Affairs Division and offers supportive activities<br />

to students who are low-income, potential first generation and/or disabled college students with<br />

an academic need. The major areas in which students may receive services are counseling,<br />

tutoring, mentoring, academic and transfer advising. Students requiring other services can be<br />

referred to appropriate on-campus departments or off-campus agencies. The program mission is<br />

to increase retention, graduation and transfer rates of participants.<br />

These supplementary tutorial and advising services are provided without charge to those who<br />

qualify, and are conducted on a one-to-one basis or in small-group sessions.<br />

Success Services<br />

Success Services assists the following students who wish to enroll or are enrolled in Associate of<br />

Science, Associate of Applied Science, or Vocational Certificate: non-traditional students<br />

(students studying in a program nontraditional for their gender); with barriers to education such<br />

as no personal transportation, single parents, or displaced homemakers; students with disabilities,<br />

economically disadvantaged students, and students with limited English proficiency. Individual<br />

orientation sessions are offered with a focus on information about available college and<br />

community resources. The program provides eligible participants with limited financial<br />

The Teaching Learning Center is located in W-233. The TLC offers computers and specialized<br />

software for Health Sciences and Sciences for Health Programs. Tutor rooms, reference books<br />

and anatomy models are available for check out. Students enrolled in a Health Sciences program<br />

or taking prerequisites are encouraged to take advantage of the TLC resources. A valid SFC<br />

student ID is required. Faculty may also schedule computers or study rooms for class use.<br />

Veterans Services<br />

<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> Community <strong>College</strong> is approved for the education and training of veterans and other<br />

eligible persons under all public laws now in effect. Students who may be eligible for<br />

educational benefits under any Veterans Administration program are urged to contact the SFC<br />

Veterans Affairs Office as soon as application is made to the <strong>College</strong>. Students desiring to<br />

receive benefits must also file an application for VA benefits at the Veterans Affairs Office. No<br />

certification can be made until the application is on file. Benefits are determined by the Veterans<br />

Administration according to VA rules and regulations. The SFC Veterans Affairs Office has<br />

been established specifically to assist veterans and other eligible persons in their pursuit of an<br />
