The first Super Summer Science Camp at the Watson Center ran two weeks from June 23 to July 3. 1 st – 6 th
graders learned about biology, geology, chemistry, and physical science from Santa Fe Community College
professors Angela Dobberfuhl and Melanie Roberti. SFCC Watson center student Kelly Michalos; dual
enrolled students Cory Marsh, Deanna Christian, Sarah Mauldin, and Megan Salas; and Keystone Heights
High School students Brian Vance and Maria Roberti; as well as SFCC Watson Center alums Katie
Huddleston and Scott Huston got valuable experience volunteering as lab assistants. The students did
experiments and demonstrations every day. Some of the fun experiments included: what do fish and
crickets eat; what factors affect crystal growth; making and testing electrical circuits; and testing different
types of rockets (for a complete list Summer Science Schedule). Learning about science extended to snacks
that were provided each day with such fare as cell cookies, soil cake, color mixing cookies and graham
cracker Wright fliers. Camp culminated in a Mad Scientist’s Chemistry Tea Party, with chemistry activities
such as baking soda and vinegar boats, red cabbage juice bracelets, make your own fizzy drink and roll your
way to ice cream. The rockets that the students made were launched by Melanie Roberti and finally the lab
assistants demonstrated the power of diet coke and mentos! This first run of Super Summer Science has
been a great success with full enrollment and enthusiastic response. The Watson Center community was
truly involved in making this a real community education experience!
