Weight is very important when diving. Most people need add
small weight bags to sink to the bottom a little bit easier. It is
also important for ascension rates.
The amount of weight added depends on the type, size, and
thickness of your suit. It also depends on if you are diving in
fresh or salt water. The thicker the suit and salt water make
you more buoyant.
For example, I need a total of four pounds to help me to get to
the bottom with a 3 mm thick wet suit in freshwater. While
another person may need a total of ten pounds with a 3 mm wet
suit.
You need to make sure to have the right amount of weight or
you could sink fast or not sink at all. When you find the perfect
amount make sure to make a note in your dive log.
