the SANDAG representative to
LOSSAN and has provided an
important link between our
agency and the rail board. He
not only represents the interests
of the San Diego region, he
also brings a corridorwide perspective
that will serve the organization
As chairman, Kellejian
will oversee the launch of a new
CARLSBAD — From the
sounds of music and great
debate to the visual and performing
arts, many Carlsbad Unified
School District sites and programs
are beneficiaries of 2011
Carlsbad Community Arts
Education Grants. One such program
is a fourth-grade woodburning
project at Hope
Elementary orchestrated by
Hope’s artist-in-residence Amy
Miller.
An $837 grant, with matching
funds raised by the Hope
community, enabled the purchase
of the wood, burners and
other supplies. The Native
American-flavored project aligns
with the fourth-grade social studies
curriculum.
On Feb. 15, as the students
began burning the Native
American symbols they had previously
selected, traced and
transferred onto 4-inch-by-6-inch
wood blocks, Arts Office
Coordinator Colleen Finnegan
OCEANSIDE —
Oceanside’s Christian Youth
Theater performs a premier
show based on the “Just So”
stories of Rudyard Kipling,
author of “Jungle Book,” beginning
March 5 at the Star
Theatre, 402 N. Coast Hwy. 101.
More than 65 North
County youngsters, ages 8 to
18, will take attendees on a
journey through the African
jungle meeting elephants, the
zebra, the giraffe, the rhino and
many more colorful characters
Tonya Rodzach visited Miller’s
classroom. Both say they were
awed by the students’ work and
delighted to see how well the
grant money is being spent.
“I am very impressed by the
visual eloquence of the students’
designs,” Rodzach said. “They
understand the symbols they are
using and they are creating interesting
compositions on the wood.
Each piece is unique and beautiful.”
“Every year, we see the
tremendous benefits the schools
derive from our grants,”
Finnegan said. “It amazes me
that teachers and parents can
make even a small amount go so
far and do so much terrific work.”
While the visitors observed,
the children worked intently and
enthusiastically. “You have to do
this complicated project step by
step,” said student Taelor
Holdcraft. “It teaches you
patience.”
“Everyone is an artist,”
Miller said.
Christian Youth Theater
set to stage creation story
as they find their unique place
in creation. This musical promises
