Teens learn
to prevent
alcohol and
drug use
VISTA — Members of the
North Coastal Prevention
Youth Coalition, or NCPYC,
returned from a week at the
Gaylord Resort in National
Harbor, Md., energized with
new ideas to help prevent alcohol
and drug use back home in
North County.
Four NCPYC members
from Vista High School attended
the Community Anti-Drug
Coalitions of America’s, or
CADCA’s, 21st annual National
Leadership Forum, along with
three staff members from Vista
Community Clinic.
They joined more than
3,000 adults and hundreds of
teens from across the country
to learn the current trends in
teen substance use, as well as
the latest prevention strategies.
CADCA’s National
Leadership Forum is the
nation’s largest training for
substance abuse prevention
and treatment professionals
and researchers, featuring
more than 100 training courses
to help community and state
leaders prevent and reduce
substance abuse and its related
problems. CADCA is the
national membership organization
representing more than
5,000 coalitions and affiliates
working to make America’s
communities safe, healthy and
drug-free.
In addition to learning
from others, they shared recent
efforts implemented in North
County in a workshop titled,
“Giving Diverse Youth a Voice
in Promoting Awareness of
Social Host Ordinances.”
During Capitol Hill Day on
Feb. 9, they met with staff in
the offices of Congressman
Brian Bilbray (R-Carlsbad) and
Congressman Darrell Issa (R-
Vista).
None of the NCPYC members
had traveled to the D.C.
area before, and they said they
were excited about such a valuable
experience.
NCPYC President Araceli
Reyes said that visiting the
nation’s capitol, and one of the
most beautiful and historical
cities in the country, was very
exciting.
“I really enjoyed getting
to meet a lot of new people
that care about their communities
as much as I do,” Reyes
said. “This was truly an unforgettable
experience.”
Coral Varona, secretary of
NCPYC, said that the workshops
provided invaluable
information. “I learned so
much, and I plan to take all this
knowledge back to my community
and continue to make a
