Chapter 2 Flavor Structure of the Standard Model 2.1 Flavor Structure of the Standard Model In the Standard Model of elementary particles there are three generations of leptons and quarks νe e u d νµ µ c s ντ , (2.1) τ t , (2.2) b and their interactions are described by a gauge field theory with the gauge group SU(3)C × SU(2)L × U(1)Y . The group SU(3) denotes Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), which governs the strong interaction among quarks. The transformation property under the electroweak gauge group SU(2)L × U(1)Y differs for the left and right chiralities of fermions. The righthanded components of the leptons and quarks are singlets under the weak SU(2)L, and the weak hypercharge Y is 0, −1, 2/3, −1/3 for neutrinos, leptons, up-type quarks and down-type quarks, respectively. The left-handed components of leptons transform as doublets under the weak SU(2)L while the weak doublets of quarks differ slightly from (2.2) and are given by u d ′ L c s ′ L t b ′ L .
