Study (CAGS) <strong>in</strong> <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Education</strong>:<br />

<strong>Positive</strong> <strong>Behavior</strong> <strong>Support</strong><br />

Assumption College Graduate School is pleased to <strong>in</strong>troduce the Certificate of Advanced Graduate<br />

Study (CAGS) <strong>in</strong> <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Education</strong>: <strong>Positive</strong> <strong>Behavior</strong> <strong>Support</strong>.<br />

The first course will be offered this Fall 2010 semester. SED 587 Advanced Application <strong>in</strong> <strong>Positive</strong> <strong>Behavior</strong> <strong>Support</strong><br />

will focus on the logic and research support<strong>in</strong>g schoolwide positive behavior supports, targeted group <strong>in</strong>terventions,<br />

and on tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g teams and staff to implement and monitor behavioral support systems <strong>in</strong> schools. SED 587 will meet<br />

on Thursday nights from 4:30-7:00pm. The Fall 2010 semester starts August 30.<br />

The 15-credit CAGS <strong>in</strong> <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Education</strong>: <strong>Positive</strong> <strong>Behavior</strong> <strong>Support</strong> is for—<br />

• <strong>Special</strong> educators who hold a master’s degree, are <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> behavioral support, and wish to get their Professional<br />

licensure as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities<br />

• <strong>Special</strong> educators and other school professionals who hold a master’s degree and their Professional license who are<br />

seek<strong>in</strong>g to expand their knowledge <strong>in</strong> the important field of behavior support <strong>in</strong> schools<br />

The five courses <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

• Advanced Application of <strong>Positive</strong> <strong>Behavior</strong> <strong>Support</strong>, <strong>in</strong> which students learn about how to apply behavioral<br />

science to <strong>in</strong>crease appropriate student behavior, assess<strong>in</strong>g and evaluat<strong>in</strong>g behavior support systems, and lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

behavioral support teams <strong>in</strong> schools.<br />

• Educat<strong>in</strong>g Students with Emotional and <strong>Behavior</strong>al Disorders, <strong>in</strong> which students will learn to design effective<br />

classroom management systems that maximize social success for all students, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those with challeng<strong>in</strong>g<br />

behaviors.<br />

• Research and Practice <strong>in</strong> <strong>Positive</strong> <strong>Behavior</strong> <strong>Support</strong>, <strong>in</strong> which students learn about the science support<strong>in</strong>g<br />

schoolwide positive behavior support and the research-based best practices that schools can use to improve<br />

student behavior.<br />

• Diversity <strong>in</strong> School<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> which students learn the impact of culture on the curriculum, teacher-student<br />

relationships, and pedagogy <strong>in</strong> schools.<br />

• The fifth course will be a performance assessment and sem<strong>in</strong>ar (for students<br />

seek<strong>in</strong>g Professional licensure) or an elective of the student’s choice (for those<br />

seek<strong>in</strong>g the CAGS only).<br />

Application Requirements:<br />

• Master’s degree <strong>in</strong> special education or related field<br />

• M<strong>in</strong>imum <strong>graduate</strong> GPA of 3.0<br />

• At least one year of full-time employment <strong>in</strong> an educational sett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Completion of the application and payment of the application fee<br />

• Official transcripts of <strong>graduate</strong> and under<strong>graduate</strong> degrees<br />

• Three letters of recommendation<br />

• A personal statement expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g why you want to pursue the CAGS <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Special</strong> <strong>Education</strong>: <strong>Positive</strong> <strong>Behavior</strong> <strong>Support</strong><br />

• Students who wish to obta<strong>in</strong> their CAGS and their Professional licensure<br />

should possess an Initial license as a Teacher of Students with Moderate<br />

Disabilities<br />

The GRE is not required.<br />

Students may take up to two classes as a special student before matriculation is required.<br />
