HISTORY
Rhipsalidopsis and Schlumbergera are
closely related species; both of them
originate from Brazil where they grow wild
in the mountains. You can tell the difference
between Rhipsalidopsis and Schlumbergera
by looking at the flowers and
the shapes of the leaves. Rhipsalidopsis
has star-shaped flowers and non-serrated
leaves whereas Schlumbergera has oblong
flowers and serrated leaves.
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
Since the 70s, PKM has bred numerous
new Rhipsalidopsis varieties. These new
varieties are marketed under PKM’s wellknown
quality brand FAIRYTALE FLOW-
ERS® as FAIRYTALE FIRE®.
Modern growing techniques and many
years’ intensive breeding efforts has turned
FAIRYTALE FIRE® into an incredibly longlasting
plant which is easy to care for by
busy families in modern homes.
FAIRYTALE FIRE® spring cactus does not
require much care and reappears year after
year.

SEASON & PRODUCTION PERIOD
Many people associate Rhipsalidopsis with
Easter but as its season is from January and
through the months of spring, calling it a
SPRING CACTUS is much more appropriate.
The FAIRYTALE FIRE® season starts as

early as January and lasts until the end of
March.
It takes 2-3 months longer to produce a
spring cactus than an autumn cactus making
it more expensive to produce.

COLOURS & POT SIZES
FAIRYTALE FIRE® is available in white,
orange, red, pink and lilac in 5½ cm , 9 cm
and 11½ cm pot sizes.
OPTIMUM BUD SIZE
We recommend a bud size of 1-2½ cm
measured from leaf edge (see page 5). A
FAIRYTALE FIRE® spring cactus bought at
this stage will be a source of great pleasure
to you as it is beautiful both when budding
and flowering.
EXHIBITIONS
FAIRYTALE FLOWERS® participated in numerous
different exhibitions in 2009, both
together with customers and alone. We
have been to Moscow, Hong Kong, Italy,
Belgium, Sweden, France, Germany and
the Netherlands. And FAIRYTALE FLOW-
ERS® appeared both on Russian television
and RAI UNO; furthermore, FAIRYTALE
FLAME® could be seen in six shows of the
popular Dutch garden programme “Tuinruimer’s”.
We will also be highly visible in 2010 in
Great Britain, Spain, etc. and at EXPO 2010
in Shanghai, China. For further information,

CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Placement:
Tolerates both bright and dark positions.
Place it in a bright position during the flowering
season
Watering:
Every 8 - 10 days. Do not over-water as its
roots do not tolerate standing in water
Temperature:
Summer 15 - 20 ° Celsius
Winter 10 - 20 ° Celsius

Frequently in the growing season

MEE®, MEE®, WONDER®, KRONPRINS-

FIRE® are registered trademarks.

Therefore only FAIRYTALE FLOWERS®
produces the original GET MEE®. We do
not sell young plants or semi finished
plants in Europe. PKM has licensed production
in North America, Canada and Japan.
MADE IN KENYA
In 2008, PKM sets up in business in Kenya.
In the future, FAIRYTALE FIRE® and
FAIRYTALE FLAME® will therefore have
been on a trip to Kenya. As PKM do not
want to compromise on our high quality,
all our plant material will be tested by PKM
in Denmark before it is sent to Kenya. The
FAIRY FLOWERS® nursery covers 10,000
m2 and is situated near Nairobi.
ENVIRONMENT
PKM has signed up to MPS, the international
environmental certification organisation,
which evaluates production
resource consumption in a general perspective
specifying requirements concerning
energy consumption, fertilizers, plant
protection and waste management. Since
1 June 2004, PKM has been classified in the
best category as an A-rated nursery.

FAIRYTALE FLOWERS® IN BRIEF
Hans Christian Andersen, the famous
Danish fairytale-writer, has inspired us to
call our fantastically beautiful flowers for
FAIRYTALE FLOWERS®.
Gartneriet PKM A/S was founded by Kristian
Madsen’ parents, Poul and Marie, in
1948. Kristian Madsen took over PKM in
1989. Today, the nursery has 167,000 m2
greenhouse area and 80,000 m2 outdoor
production areas where 180 competent
employees produce approx. 20 million
