HighGear
Vol. 53 Edition 12•December 2011
from the president Rex Heck, President
The high-speed
driving season has
just come to an end,
and we are already
preparing for next
year. We have scheduled
six weekends at
High Plains Raceway
and are planning at least two autocrosses.
This year I didn’t get to drive
as much as I would have liked. One of
the reasons is that I waited until April
to start getting my car ready. Bad timing!
Not only was there not much time,
but the shops were really busy with
other customers like me, who waited
until the last minute. One of my new
year’s resolutions this year is to start
work on the car before the new year.
So, next year, no excuses.
While I am talking (or writing) about
last year, we had a few RMR members
go to the Porsche Parade in Savannah.
And probably as a percentage of members
there, RMR brought home a lot
of prizes. One big one went to Jeremy
Rosenberger (who didn’t even go!).
He won the Paul Heinmiller Memorial
Trophy for the best newsletter in all of
PCA. Ken Provasi and Lynn Zucker finished
fourth in the Navigational class
in the TSD Rally. Those of you who
drove in the TSD Rally at the Parade in
Keystone know that such a placement
is quite an accomplishment! And for
folks who keep their cars really clean,
Patty Kautz
Paul R. Heinmiller Award winner 20 1
Rex Heck with a few of his closest friends from the RMR
and AMR boards of directors and committee chairs.
Dave and Bette Seeland won
their division in the Preservation class
in the concours. Congratulations to all
of the RMR winners. You did a great job
representing the Region.
Here I am writing about next year,
and we have one more big event
planned for this year: the Holiday
Party. Daisy Pettem and Alex Lovejoy
have a very special evening planned.
The deadline for registration is almost
here. Go to rmr.pca.org for details and
to register. And be sure to bring an unwrapped
toy for the Toys for Tots program.
There will be the usual dinner,
socializing and presentation of awards.
Of the three, socializing is the most
fun. In addition, the venue itself will be
an added attraction. Don’t miss it!
This is my last president’s article for
the newsletter. I have been doing this
for two years now, and it is time to get
some new blood (or ink) to prepare this
column. The president’s job has been
easy, thanks to all of the help I have
received from the board, event chairs
and committees. This is a large club
with lots of activities. The president
may have some suggestions and ideas,
but really he just goes along for the
ride. It is almost a full-time commitment
to keep track of all that is happening.
I am looking forward to attending
next year’s many RMR events and just
having fun. See you all there.
unoff area Jeremy Rosenberger, Editor upcoming events
It’s mea culpa
time.
No, that’s not a
new holiday tradition—at
least not
yet. (Although it
could dovetail nicely
with the Festivus holiday’s “airing of
grievances”.)
Last month, on the page
opposite this one, High
Gear promised a screening
of the film “Senna” at the
November membership
social. Well, those of us
who attended watched
“Le Mans” instead
(which really is a
great movie—especially
on the big
screen, which is a
format that many of us
have never seen it in!).
Anyway, if anyone
out there is feeling like
they were the victim
of “bait and switch,” that would
be understandable. But don’t blame
Program Chairman Erik Behrendsen—
the fault is mine. I was a little more
optimistic than he was that the stars
and planets would align properly, thus
permitting “Senna” to be shown on
that early November date. So, while
Erik’s original article was noncommittal
about what film would be shown, I
decided to take a chance and turn up
the sensationalism. Well, we all know
now how that gamble paid off.
But all is not lost. “Senna” will even-
get involved
find a way to show it when it does.
Stay tuned. In the meantime, feel free
to send a nasty letter to the editor expressing
your displeasure. It just might
end up in print! Alternatively, come
down to the holiday party on the 10th
(see opposite page) to give me a piece
of your mind. There I will be sworn in
with the rest of the 2012 board, so I
could probably be
sworn at as well!
And, as a wise man
once said, that’s all I
have to say about
that.
Elsewhere in
this issue you’ll
find our feature
story, in which six
other RMR members and
I trekked to Miller Motorsports
Park in Tooele,
Utah, for Intermountain
Region’s club race and
DE. While the journey
itself was fun (and, fortunately,
largely uneventful), this time
it was more about the destination! For
those who have never been to Miller,
it is quite a Mecca of motorsports—a
world-class facility centered around a
24-turn, 4.5-mile road course. But no
need to go into detail here; check out
the article beginning on page 10.
This issue completes Volume 53
of the Rocky Mountain Region news
magazine. It’s hard to believe I’ve
been doing this for two whole years
now. See you in January!
membership musings Nancy Warren, Membership Chair
Well, another year
has gone by the
wayside, and another
year of Porsche Club
events is almost kaput!
I hope everyone
has enjoyed the many
events during the year: DE’s, Autocrosses,
Membership Socials, Concours, a
Rally, several Breakfast Club Tours and
several Charity events.
There are many fun and exciting
events being planned for the new year,
2012. But these activities cannot happen
without volunteers! Volunteers are
needed for each event, whether chairing
events or helping out in some other
capacity. All you have to do is offer your
time and talents to help with any of
the events scheduled for 2012. You can
contact any member of the RMR Board
if this is something you would like to do.
Please check the Web site at rmr.pca.
org for the 2012 schedule of events.
As of December, we have welcomed
207 new and transferred members to
our region this year. We need to keep
adding new members and keep our
region growing in the new year. Current
members, please remember to renew
your membership on time at www.pca.
org. Also, every member needs to keep
their information up to date so you will
know what is happening! We need both
a current mailing address and a current
e-mail address.
The last event of this year is our
annual Holiday Party. It will be held on
Saturday, December 10 at the Denver
Museum of Nature and Science in the
Bird Exhibit room. Please remember to
bring a new, unwrapped toy for “Toys
for Tots.” Cash or check donations will
also be accepted. “Toys for Tots” is a
charitable program founded by the U.S.
Marine Corps Reserve. They have been
providing happiness and hope to disadvantaged
children during each holiday
season since 1947! We will have two
Marines as our special guests and to
accept your donations.
Also, remember we have nifty name
badges and colorful car badges. They
make great stocking stuffers!
Have a joyous holiday season and a
very happy New Year! Hope to see you
at the next Porsche Club event, because
it is more fun with you there!
Join the Event Registration Team!
Although the 2011 driving season is drawing to a close, we
are already looking forward to another great year coming up
in 2012! Whether maneuvering cones in an autocross, keeping
track of the “rules of the road” in a rallye, or trying to hit every
apex with precision at a DE, our events would not be possible
without the help of volunteers. The registrar works closely
with the event chair as well as the chief driving instructors and
track control, so that we know how many people are coming,
what they’re driving, and whether they are a newcomer or PCA
veteran.
Are you interested in understanding more about how PCA
events function? Do you like meeting new people? Do you
enjoy sharing your passion for Porsches and driving with others?
If so, the registration committee is looking for you! We
need committee members to help in two different capacities:
pre-event organization and on-site registration. If you are interested
in helping on the registration committee or would like to
learn more about the committee, please contact Kristie Widrig
at 303.655.7495 or widrigkl@aol.com.

With a bowl of red beans and
rice on the console and a huge
glass of iced tea in the cup
holder, I pulled onto I-25 Thursday
morning just outside of Fort Collins.
About one exit behind me were six
more RMR members from the south,
bound for Miller Motorsports Park. As
I crept along at an eternally slow 50
MPH, I waited with some anticipation
for the caravan, as five cars on trailers
and one lone untrailered Boxster
passed me at an unpublishable speed.
So I dropped pedal on my version of a
turbo, turned up the radio, watched a
cloud of diesel smoke trail out behind
me, and we were off to the races.
After maintaining a brisk pace from
Fort Collins to Laramie, our caravan
pulled into town in search of fuel,
snacks and a chance to check our
respective loads. Although I knew all
the guys that we were traveling with,
I didn’t really know any of them well,
and certainly not well enough to admit
that the pace of travel so far
was a little fast for me. After
some jockeying around
at the pumps and
filling my tank
with far more
diesel than
should have been consumed so far,
I found the courage to speak up and
suggest a more trailer-friendly speed.
While oppositions were voiced from the
front runners, it turned out that others
had been thinking the same thing, and
a seemingly arbitrary speed of 73 MPH
was decided on. With new confidence
that the fuel budget would now hold
out for the remainder of our pilgrimage,
and the two-way radios provided for all
the vehicles, the seven of us continued
on. As the road passed beneath us, the
radio banter was light and fun, punctuated
by occasional musical interludes
(provided by anonymous caravan members)
and discussions of lunch stops
and who needed fuel when. After a
quick 7.5 hours, we were coming up on
the biggest and most impressive race
track facility I had ever been to.
After a little confusion
regarding
registration
and the process of getting into the
secured paddocks, we all made our
way to the garage spaces that had
been procured for us by Chad and
offloaded our toys and tools into the
pristine space. While I had long planned
to attend the club race at Miller, I was
a latecomer to the group and had no
idea that we would be storing our cars
in such luxury. The garages offered
TVs with views of the track, nearlyprivate
bathrooms, air lines, power on
the walls and ceiling, oil dumps, rollup
doors, and seriously ample light.
After unloading, we walked across the
paddock to the timing and scoring
building, a three-story structure with
many classrooms and other spaces I
never explored—but best of all, a huge
second-story patio from which you
could see almost all 4.5 miles of the
24-turn track. The immensity of this
facility was really starting to set in, and
conversations quickly turned to racing
in the morning.
Friday, 6 AM: After a sleepless night
of anticipation, we met in the lobby
of our hotel, had some quick
food, and headed
to the
track. While only Tommy and I had
come for the Club Race portion of the
weekend, the excitement for our first
laps of the weekend were felt by all.
A few short drivers meetings, a quick
change of wheels, fuel, and helmet
and... Wait, where to now? The Miller
facility was so big that Tommy and I
had to drive up and down the paddock
looking for the grid entrance —surely it
wasn’t actually all the way at the other
end, almost a mile away! I can’t speak
for Tommy, but that time when I was
pretending to check equipment, I was
really just hoping that other trackbound
cars would pass me and I could
fall in line behind them. After finally
gridding and seeing a green for the first
practice session, we headed on track
for the longest lap of my life—four
minutes and I still hadn’t seen a
turn twice.
Back in the garages, we all
commiserated with great
excitement about how lost
we were, how we thought
turn X was really turn
Y, how much time we
needed to pick up,
what tire pressures
how much fuel we were burning on this
wide-open track, and how this was going
to be an awesome weekend.
Saturday, 6 AM: Another sleepless
night, but this time I knew it was the
first race day—and I, like all the other
guys, had been running the track in my
head all night. So... food, fuel, drivers
meeting, tires... and we were out for
the first warm-up sessions. It seemed
that everything was going well: The
cars were running well; the track was
looking familiar; my ‘78 SC hadn’t
eaten itself yet; and except
for Chad and I, everyone
else had late-model
cars, so we
were
good. Unfortunately, however, that
was not the case. Joe’s Mexico Blue
GT3 RS had developed a problem with
the sequential shifter, a sure weekendwrecker
for him. After pulling together
to lend tools and to all take a look at
something we knew very little about, I
stepped away for a track-side nap before
the enduro later that day. When
I returned from my nap to
ess with diagnosis and a possible
sequential system had failed
and that a new part was needed, but
not to worry. He had been on the phone
with the manufacturer, who was dispatching
a technician from Florida that
evening with a new part, and he would
be on the track before the first session
in the morning. I had heard about
guys who got things taken care of, but
this was seriously impressive. So while
Joe waited for his mechanic and part,
I nervously wandered around trying to
get ready for the enduro. Thankfully,
Angela had driven in the previous night
and was there to get me settled down
while Carlos, Tommy and Chad divided
up the pit crew responsibilities. The
enduro has undoubtedly become one
of my favorite parts of a weekend, and
although an untimely crash of another
competitor brought out a full-course
yellow, causing me to lose position,
the excitement of working with Carlos,
Chad, Tommy and Angela during the
pit and feeling like we had all worked
on that race together really made the
day for me and generated some of my
favorite pictures from the weekend.
day with friends and competitors alike.
With the cars loaded and the fuel
over, and we were ready to start the
trip home. When we set out, I had met
all the guys I would be traveling with
previously, and while we had all shared
passing “hellos” in the paddock back
in Denver, I had no idea how much fun
it would be to really spend some time
with these guys. After talking about it
subsequently, I would say that RMR can
expect that the eight members who
made the trip this year will be headed
that way again, and will be looking for
new racers and DE drivers alike to join
us on what should be an annual pilgrimage
to Miller.
miller mania
Early in 2011, someone threw out
the question, “Hey, why don’t we all
go learn a new track, visit our PCA
neighbors to the west and have some
fun?” Seven guys said, “Road trip!” We
thought we would share our experiences
so that everyone would know
just how much fun a road trip to the
West can be! Alex Acevedo, Joe Bank,
Chad Cox, Tommy Dean, Adam Jaspers,
Carlos Pereira and Jeremy Rosenberger
made plans. Here is our account.
High Gear: Why did you guys
decide to “head out west”? What
were your reasons for going?
Tommy: A pro driver told me that I
needed to experience not only different
tracks, but a professional track. I had
heard that the PCA folks out there put
on a great event, so a road trip to Miller
was on!
High Gear: Did you guys all follow
each other out, caravan style? Did
everyone keep up?
Joe: Track drivers aren’t competitive
at all! I will say this: The best part
of the drive out was that we each had
communicators, so we could buzz anyone
at any time and share the (eclectic)
mix of music we were each listening to.
High Gear: Which way did you
go? How long was the drive?
Joe: I-80 to avoid the mountains—and
it went by very quickly, driving with
these lunatics!
High Gear: I’ll bet the scenery
was beautiful. Anything stand out
along the way?
Jeremy Rosenberger
Sean Cridland
Tommy: The roads were clear, and
the skies were as big as they get. I
enjoyed seeing the wind farms.
High Gear: Where did everyone
stay?
Alex: All in Tooele, very close and
convenient to the track. I was at the
Holiday Inn Express and the others
were at the Hampton Inn. Both were
equal in appearance—relatively new
and clean—with an included breakfast. I
would recommend either.
Jeremy: Almost all of us. I had a
reservation at the Chateau de Father-in-
Law in Salt Lake City. About 30 minutes
farther than downtown Tooele, but the
price was right.
High Gear: OK, when you rolled
up to Miller, what were your
thoughts?
Joe: Impressive. I had been there
before for ALMS races, but never to
drive. We rented three garage bays
together, but since only 5-6 cars rented
the garage bays at all, we had a 10Ksquare-foot
warehouse to park in. We
had electricity, air, and nearly private
bathrooms! I couldn’t wait to get out
on the track. You can see much of the
course from one location. It was going
to be a tough night of sleeping.
High Gear: The event ran the
full track—24 turns and 4.5 miles.
What did you think of that?
Alex: Driving the 4.5 miles feels like
you’re on track for a long time before
seeing the start-finish line again. The
laps don’t feel so redundant because
you just don’t have time to do as many
laps. And there are more turns to figure
out and learn, to keep you from getting
bored. There are a lot of subtle points
to each turn that can make a difference
in your lap times. Riding with folks that
have driven it a lot will help your lap
times. The turns at first seem easy to
figure out, but to really extract the best
times, you need to know the best line
with your car.
High Gear: What was the hardest
for you to learn?
Jeremy: The full course at Miller
is twice as long, with twice as many
turns, as our “home” track, High Plains
Raceway. It’s also relatively flat, with
fewer visual cues to remind you where
you are on course. So some of the turns
look the same at first, making it easy
to get lost out there. And it’s hard to
develop a rhythm with a four-minute
lap time!
High Gear: How did the cars hold
up—I heard Joe had a small issue?
Joe: On my second run of the first
day, my sequential shifter froze out on
track, stuck in third. Luckily, I was still
able to drive “Mexico” and get it back
to the garage. It was Friday around
11:00. I called my pals at AutoQuest in
Fort Myers, Florida (the sole distributors
for this sequential unit) and asked
them what I could do to try and fix it. I
was not going to be left unable to drive
after this 8-hour journey and only a
small taste of how much fun this track
was going to be. Long story short, I
flew one of their mechanics, Frank, out
morning. I drove him straight to the
track, where he wrenched on Mexico
for 60 minutes to install a new sequential
the DE portion of the event? Were
there lots of cars to chase? And
what about that Panoz?
Alex: The DE was fine, with one
“slow” and one “fast” run group. The
attendance for both race and DE were
a bit sparse, especially on such a large
track. But still fun! I tried to keep up
with Joe and Carlos in their 997.2 GT3
And the Panoz was no match for Joe and
Carlos!
High Gear: What about the Club
Race—how did that go?
Joe: Yes, the club race. Our “team”
did outstanding! It was a blast to watch
the process. As many club racers know
from actually racing, it takes, shall we
say, a different level of stress than DE
work. I was very worried about Tommy
on the first and second days. That is
to say, I knew he was going to be fast
and that he would figure out how to be
right up there (which he did!), but for
the first 48 hours, it was clear that he
wasn’t sure himself. But, like all great
drivers, Tommy figured it out (like we all
knew he would), and he was right in it.
He not only finished very high overall
(fourth overall in Sprint 3 and fifth
overall in the Super Sprint), but he also
won his class. And Adam was a rock
star, too. Honestly, the dueling between
Adam and other drivers in E class was
some of the most excitement of the
weekend. It was like watching Jörg Bergmeister
and Jaime Melo finishing the
final lap of Sebring. Adam ran strong
and finished second in class in Sprint 3.
High Gear: Going back to the
facilities, there was gas, garages—heck,
everything you wanted,
right?
Tommy: Yes, everything! The only
thing missing were the flag girls and my
pit crew.
High Gear: The Intermountain
Region had a great dinner Saturday
night.
Jeremy: While this was my first time
driving in a DE at Miller, I’ve been going
to Intermountain’s club race for a few
years as a spectator, and the Saturday
night dinner has always been superb.
This year was no exception.
High Gear: How was Tooele? Good
food? I hear the town gets rowdy
on Sunday nights.
Alex: In Tooele we ate at a Thai
restaurant the first night, and I thought
the food was great. I had a salmon dish.
The next night, Friday, we ate at a local
Italian restaurant, which was surprisingly
large inside and fairly elegant.
Tommy had a meat ball the size of a
softball. The process to cook it was
explained to us, and was way more
complicated than I ever imagined.
High Gear: How was the drive
back home?
Tommy: Usually, the drive back
home is something I dread. Not this
time. The chat on the radios was all
too much fun! Joe started the “What is
your favorite Porsche ever?” plus a lot
of other questions. It was as much fun
driving back as going.
High Gear: Would you go back?
sister carmen volunteering wrap-up Camilla Rosenberger, Charity Committee Co-Chair
It was a beautiful Saturday morning
in late October in Lafayette, Colorado
when several members of the RMR/PCA
gathered at the Sister Carmen Community
Center Food Bank with a common
goal: to fill cutely child-decorated grocery
bags with food to be distributed to
those in need during the 2011 holiday
season. There were bags for Thanksgiving
and bags for Christmas, and the
Food Bank was buzzing with volunteers
from various organizations. Although
our group was small, we spiritedly
worked with determination and speed.
As the piles grew tremendously, it was
amazing to see how many people would
benefit from this short but important
volunteer session. The Food Bank graciously
accepted our assistance, as well
as a check from the Charity and Good
Works Committee in the amount of $250.00.
Thank you to all who came and worked—your
cheery dedication to helping others is a thoughtful
reminder of the great impact volunteering has
on our community. Happy Holidays!
in the zone Sean Cridland, PCA Zone 9 Representative
If you’ve read my
columns before, you
know that I don’t shy
away from my love
for new technology.
Certainly Porsche has
made its reputation
on the world stage
by being a step—or several—ahead
of its competitors in engine, handling
and aerodynamic developments. At the
same time, much of our PCA activity has
centered on tradition. And that often
means fetishizing a particular favorite
model or period. Sometimes that
leads to an interesting tension between
Porsche’s reputation as an innovator and
Porsche enthusiasts’ love for the brand
as they’ve come to know it.
This past month, I’ve found myself
at a similar crossroads with a project
I’ve been working on for Zone 9. I’ve
been updating the Zone 9 Web site (see
zone9.pca.org) and have been working
on a couple of historical pages. One of
them is a listing of all our Zone 9 Reps,
and the other is a page which commemorates
Zone 9’s Regions and members
who have won either National or Overall
Parade trophies.
This project came about when I was
over in Amarillo this fall, visiting the
Llano Estacado Region for their 45th
anniversary. While there, I met former
Zone 9 Rep Mike Tiernan, and we started
talking about who all the Zone 9 Reps
had been. I said, “You know, Mike, a
couple of years ago, Frank Barrett and
Dale Thero—also former Zone 9 reps—
put together a list. I’ll send it to you.” Of
course, when I got home, I couldn’t find
it. So, recently I got back in touch with
Frank and Dale, and we reconstructed
the list. Then we ran it by other former
Zone 9 Reps, Kathy Fricke and Larry
Pittsley. OK, we got it and did it.
So, I figured, rather than lose it again,
we should post it on the Zone 9 site for
all to see. But once I got it there, I was
unsatisfied. It looked empty. In putting
together the list, a number of colorful
stories were told about this person or
that who contributed to the Regions that
make up Zone 9, and it got my mind
going again. Rather than just a list, we
need some photos and biographies.
Well, that’s a different kind of project
entirely. See, it works out that many of
us who are having fun with our Porsches
and great times with the people of PCA
don’t ever think to write anything down
or even to take photos. These days, it’s
a bit different because our phones have
cameras, and the digital age has made it
much easier and cheaper to record just
about everything. But that wasn’t the
case in decades prior. And even if people
did take photos, not as many thought
anyone would want to see them in 10,
20, 30 or 50 years!
Finding info on the last four Zone 9
Reps was easy; they’re still active in the
club, and it’s just a matter of rousting
them to get something to me. Going
back a little further is harder. Luckily
for me, Frank Barrett is an author and
former newsletter editor, and has a mind
for keeping and recording things. I’m
also lucky to be able to draw on some
members from my own and nearby Regions
who were present for some of the
great adventures and stories. Roadrunner
Dave Stinchcomb has a wealth of
stories about Zone 9 in the 70’s. Carrera
Past President Fran Walker knows everyone
from that era and even manages to
keep track of many of them.
We’re also lucky to have some PCA
members who are either club historians,
or just keenly interested, or both.
Amy Legg-Rogers is the Rocky Mountain
Region’s historian and has done some
good digging around for me. Phyllis
Godfredson and Kathleen Lennon of
Alpine Mountain Region have done some
excellent research and found some info
that I was having trouble with. National
PCA Historian RJ Wilmoth and PCA Office
Manager Charlotte Chirinos have both
helped me to find bits and pieces. I was
able to find a thread about one of our
early Zone 9 Reps, Jim McConnell (dec.),
on the Studebaker Drivers forum online,
and through them his wife Mary contacted
me. And the list goes on. So now
it seems that I have info on all our Zone
9 Reps, starting with Jim Stubbs at the
very beginning in 1974.
Our list of Zone 9 Reps is: Sean
Cridland (Roadrunner), 2009 to present;
Dale Thero (Rocky Mountain), 1993-96,
2006-08; Howard Burr (Alpine Mountain),
2005-06; Kathy Fricke (Rocky Mountain),
2001-04; Larry Pittsley (Roadrunner),
1997-2000; Cal Hansen (Roadrunner),
1989-92; Allan Worrell (Alpine Mountain),
1985-88; Frank Barrett (Rocky
Mountain), 1979-84; Mavis Hampton
(Carrera), 1977-78; Mike Tiernan (Llano
Estacado), 1977; Jim McConnell (Rocky
Mountain), 1975-76; and Jim Stubbs
(Rocky Mountain), 1974. For more complete
info, see zone9.pca.org/history.
html.
What struck me as I was working
with everyone to pull this list together
wasn’t just how dedicated these people
were to the Porsche marque, and how
dedicated and enthusiastic they were to
serve their clubs by putting on events
and organizing, but most of all, their
dedication to having a GREAT time and
encouraging others to have an equally
great time together as a community
of friends. Reading and listening to the
stories makes me think that we’re going
to need a couple more history pages on
the Web site—one that might be a “Wall
of Fame” of notable Zone 9 characters,
and one that’s just stories and photos.
That brings me back to my original
thought. When it comes to the cars, we
love innovative technology, but also
have great reverence for our favorite
period. That’s the rub that I’m encountering
in my research. Let’s call it the
356 Syndrome. Everyone loves their era,
but no one seems to think that it’s worth
much... until it’s too pricey to retrieve. If
we think only of modern cars and modern
PCA, we lose a great bit of the value
of both. If we think only of our favorite
period, we don’t appreciate the developments
and the excitement of the present.
That’s true of our Regions as well.
When I was newsletter editor for Roadrunner,
I had the opportunity to write
the monthly history column, and that
meant sifting back through old issues of
our newsletter and Panorama and putting
together names, faces, places and
events. What struck me was how much
fun was had with so little. In many of
the photos, the cars were being driven
on dirt roads and showed signs of use.
The PCA Regions we all take for granted
were chartered by people with great zeal
and passion for their cars, for adventure,
and for each other. Just as you can see
the heritage of the original Gmünd prototype
356 in the current 991 Carrera,
you can feel the enthusiasm of our PCA
forebears in our own activities today—
but not without concentrated effort.
I would argue, however, that just as
we worry about Porsche losing its identity
as technology rushes further away
from the air-cooled era, we’re in danger
of losing our soul as a club if we don’t
pay a little more attention to our Regional
and Zone histories. So, when you get
a chance, take a look at the Zone 9 Web
site and check out some of our history.
Also, support your Regional historian
with stories and photos, dig out the old
stuff and take care of it. And share it. If
there was anything obvious at the recent
Rennsport Reunion IV at Laguna Seca, it
was that people still love the drivers and
cars from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s,
and they want to know the stories! As
we move into the holiday season, let’s
take some time to remember where we
came from before we move into the next
adventures in the New Year.
Best wishes to you for the holiday season,
and I hope to see you at an event
soon.
December 2011

i get around Dick Badler
All I Want for
Christmas is... a
Type 991
It’s that time of
year—time to make
that list, check it
twice and pin it on the pillow of your
significant other.
I’ve made mine. And at the top of the
list is a new Type 991 911. Why not?
I can dream, can’t I? At least it will be
out soon, so I won’t have to wait, like
I would for a GT3 variant, or a 4WD
variant, or a cabriolet, or a Targa, or a
Turbo, or a GT2. I’m not even asking for
an S.
What sold me on the car was the latest
edition of Porsche’s self-produced
magazine, Christophorus, issue 352,
which has as the cover story, “Our
Identity—A New 911 Generation.”
This issue is so far over the top, it’s
December 2011
coming around
again for more.
Take, for instance,
the
coolest series
of see-through
overlays you’ve
ever laid eyes on.
They start with
the 901 of 1963,
and then overlay
the silhouette of
the G Model of
1973, then the
964, the 993, the
996, the 997 and,
finally, the shape of the 991. There’s
that familial form, unerring through the
gauze of all these years.
No other car can do this. No other
car company can do this. No other car
magazine can do this.
But it gets better. On page 14 starts
a three-page spread of an interview
between Jay Leno and Matthias Müller.
The magazine describes Jay as “one
of America’s most popular television
hosts and a car collector.” It’s the Euro
view and you have to laugh. I describe
him as the luckiest man alive. And I
think he’d agree. Which is part of his
charm.
Jay asks the CEO of Porsche questions
like, “Some cars are merely cars. But
to me, a Porsche is far more than that.
How do you do it, Mr. Müller?” And he
responds with, “If we should ever ask
ourselves where we want to be, a look
at the 911 would tell us right away.”
The magazine is grouped into three
sections, titled “Porsche Pure,” “Porsche
Passion” and “Porsche Performance.”
Here’s how the “Pure” section starts:
“In the quest to understand the car’s
inner values, the first thing you encounter
is its exterior appearance. Painted in
the unspectacular dark gray-blue of a
stormy summer sky, this 911 does not
just stand around on its parking place—
it exudes an inner peace. It concentrates
on its inner life.”
For “Passion,” my favorite quote is,
“The first impression is astonishing.
The icon has lost none of its reduced
quality; the car remains as measured as
ever. But there’s now an unmistakable
subliminal resonance of modernity, an
unarticulated challenge.”
But “Performance” is my favorite sec-
tion. Here you find the images that stir
the soul. Vic Elford and David Stone, lifting
an inside wheel en route to victory
in the Solitude Rally in 1967. A Carrera
RSR tearing through Sicilian streets to
win the Targa Florio in 1973. The Paris-
Dakar Rally-winning 959, at speed in
1986.
And they take a Type 991 for a drive.
Some drive. “The 911 is chomping at
the bit. There’s no need to rein it in,
as its six-cylinder engine is positively
purring with anticipation. The Ring
Road that circles Iceland offers over
800 miles to run loose. After just a few
miles, it’s clear that the comfort factor
has grown proportionately with the
length of the wheelbase.”
Now, here’s the coup de grace. A
3x5-inch (more or less) mini-brochure,
soft-glued into the magazine. It’s
titled “A 911 Love Story.” The subhead
reads, “Forty-seven model years of the
Porsche 911, told in forty-seven chapters:
For each year in the life of the 911,
we have bundled together a short and
sweet collection of anecdotes, associations
and prospects. A brief history of a
successful model by Klaus Kretschmer.”
Ha!
Let’s just summarize by quoting the
subhead for the last section. Here’s
what it says; “Want to have, have, want
to have again.”
Never mind. Forget it. I know I’m not
going to get the car, at least any time
soon. But I’m happy... I already have
the magazine! Happy Holidays!

High Gear is printed in Englewood, CO by
what we do
Whether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have
fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses,
rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more. Each year RMR organizes a variety of opportunities
to enjoy and learn about your Porsche.
Tour
A tour is a non-competitive driving event
in which participants follow a given route to a
destination (which may or may not be known
in advance). A tour may vary in length from a
day trip to a long weekend with an overnight
stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes
(which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit
interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are
sometimes combined with rallies to add variety
and a dose of competition to the event.
RMR hosts at least one tour each year; AMR
typically offers several. A number of tours are
usually offered at Porsche Parade as well.
Rally
A rally is a competitive event in which contestants
attempt to follow a course specified
by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically
run on public, paved roads, and speed limits
are always observed. The two major types
of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD)
rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally,
participants attempt to follow the instructions
precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as
points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints
(the locations of which are not known
in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is
typically a bit less rigid and usually involves
solving puzzles of some type.
Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at
least one of each type—are offered.
Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and
sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.
Autocross (AX)
An autocross is a competition in which
drivers navigate their cars through a course
defined by orange cones, usually in a large
parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate,
topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher
than second gear for many cars). Competing
cars are spaced at long intervals—typically
only one or two cars are on the course at any
time. Autocross is a safe way to experience
high-performance driving while learning to
drive your car at its limit.
Together, RMR and AMR host several autocross
events each year, including Eiskhana
(essentially an autocross on the ice!) in the
Membership Social
Membership socials provide an opportunity
to reconnect with old friends and meet new
members. Historically, a membership meeting
begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed
by the evening’s program. The content
of the program varies, sometimes featuring a
“slide show” from a recent event, or a guest
speaker such as accomplished Speed World
Challenge racer Randy Pobst.
RMR’s membership socials, unless otherwise
stated, are held the first Thursday of the
month. Different venues and topics will keep
the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch High
Gear and the RMR Web site for details. And if
you have any ideas for a program, talk to the
Program Committee Chair or a Board member!
Tech Session
A tech session is just what it sounds like—a
session in which a technical topic is discussed.
Not just for gearheads, a tech session may
demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself” procedures
such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions
are usually presented by experienced Porsche
Driving Events
Non-Driving Events
winter and an AX school in the spring. Additionally,
autocross is a major event at Porsche
Parade.
Driver Education (DE)
A driver education event provides a safe,
controlled environment for high-performance
driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill
levels the opportunity to hone their driving
skills, with the help of an experienced instructor,
in a controlled, closed-course environment.
In keeping with PCA philosophy, the
primary emphasis at all times is on safety. A
word of warning, though: the DE experience
may be habit-forming!
As DE events are not racing, nor preparation
for racing, lap times are not recorded. However,
some DE events are followed immediately
by a time trial event, which gives drivers
a chance to quantify their performance. Lap
times may then be used to measure personal
improvement, for bragging rights, etc.
RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains
Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at
the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future)
Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.
Club Race
A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing
event. A race weekend consists of a number of
practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions),
often involving both “sprint” and “endurance”
races. As a Club Racing license (issued by
PCA National) is required for competition, club
racers are serious and experienced drivers.
The cars they bring with them to the track can
be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the
PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated
with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere”
club race at Second Creek in 1992.
Because of the logistics involved in an
event of this magnitude, a club race requires
a legion of volunteers. However, a club race is
also one of most exciting events to participate
in, so be sure to sign up!
RMR hosts one club race each year at High
Plains Raceway which, combined with a Driver
Education event, adds up to one thrilling
weekend!
technicians, many of whom are sponsors of
RMR events and High Gear.
RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year,
typically in the “off months” when few driving
events take place. In addition, numerous tech
sessions are offered at Porsche Parade.
Concours d’Elegance
A concours is essentially a car show, in
which contestants endeavor to present their
cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible.
A number of judged categories usually
exist, typically differentiating between types of
cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation
(“daily driver” or “full preparation” or
somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may
be entered as “display only,” for owners who
wish to participate but not compete.
RMR participates in a handful of local
