HighGear
Vol. 53 Edition 11•November 2011
from the president Rex Heck, President
As 2011 winds
down, the board is
working hard planning
the events
for next year. A lot
of our events, like
Driver Education,
take several months to plan. There are
many issues to consider. One big one
is the event schedule—we have a joint
board meeting with AMR in late October
to lay out the next year’s schedule.
Some dates are pretty well fixed; for
example, HPR is such a popular track
that we have already had to commit
to our dates for next year. Then
around that we have to schedule tours,
autocrosses, concours, socials, and any
other event the members would like
to have. We work with AMR to avoid
conflicts—we don’t want to have an
autocross the same day the AMR is
having one. Likewise, we try to avoid
tours and track events the same weekend.
However, even with the best of
intentions, it doesn’t always work out.
Then there are the financials to consider,
the goal being to break even for
all events collectively at the end of the
year. There are relatively fixed costs
associated with events, such as facility
rental and ambulance costs for DE’s,
that are pretty well defined. There are
other optional expenses like giveaways,
water, beer, soda, etc. We all
like these things, but the costs have to
be covered. Many of the event chairs
seek sponsors to pay for the extras. In
fact, without our sponsors, our events
would cost a lot more. So when
you patronize one of our sponsors,
thank them for their support. Other
regions charge up to $400 a weekend,
or $250 per day and an extra $30 for
timed runs. Our costs have increased
in the past few years—track and venue
rental has gone up, and we are adding
more amenities to make events more
enjoyable. For example, we now pay
corner workers at HPR. This helps keep
events on time, and we don’t have a
corner worker chair going through the
pits begging for corner workers.
Now that we have scheduled the
events, we need to get someone to
run them. The Second Vice President is
responsible for recruiting event chairs.
Our goal is to have a different chair
for each event; that way, a member
only has to do it once a year. For most
events, we try to get two co-chairs to
share the load and to pair an experienced
chair with a first-timer. We also
conduct event chair training in January
to go over the procedures for running
events. We have an excellent training
manual for event chairs. So no excuses—raise
your hand and volunteer to
help! No experience necessary.
Speaking of events, the final event
of the year is upon us. That’s right. It
is time for the annual holiday party. We
are holding it at a very special location
this year. So you had better register
early so you don’t get left out. Check
the ad on page 5 of this issue of High
November Membership Social
This month’s membership social takes us to the south part of town to
watch a movie (which is even tangentially Porsche-related) on the big
screen at the Landmark Theaters in Greenwood Village.
We will be screening “Senna” (barring any unforeseen technical difficulties),
but more importantly, we need to elect our new board members
that evening. The evening will be great fun for all, as the movie, popcorn
and a drink are on the house! In other
words, you don’t need to bring any money
with you to enjoy the night’s entertainment.
There is limited seating, however
(184 people)—so first come, first served.
When: Thursday, November 3, 6:30 PM
Where: The Landmark Theaters, 5415
Landmark Place, Greenwood Village
Plenty of free parking just across the
street from the theater!
You won’t want to miss this event!
See you then,
unoff area Jeremy Rosenberger, Editor upcoming events
The original plan
for this month’s
issue of High Gear
looked a lot different
than what you’re
reading now.
As I’ve written
about in the past, the feature article
and other major content for an issue
are typically set a month or so
in advance. Some articles and event
coverage appear as space permits, but
I generally know the “broad strokes”
well ahead of press time. And that’s
the way the planning for this issue was
going.
Then a funny thing happened. Most
of you have probably heard of Rennsport
Reunion IV, which took place last
month at Mazda Raceway Laguna
Seca. But little did I know how many
RMR members were actually attending
(about a dozen of us, that I’m aware
of). Well, that’s interesting, I thought.
But then Dan Carlson reminded me
that back in June, he had offered to
provide some coverage of the event—
which he then delivered. Then, Diane
Collier (who incidentally is a former
editor of the RMR newsletter), upon
her return from Rennsport, offered to
do the same. How could I refuse?
And so this issue is full of all things
Rennsport. It’s clear that those of us
who didn’t attend missed a spectacular
event, but there’s always Rennsport
Reunion V! Start making plans
now—and if you find yourself in need
of press credentials, High Gear will be
here for you!
But since the next Rennsport Reunion
is still a few years away, you
may be pleased to learn (or you may
already know by now) that another
Porsche-related event of national significance
is coming to our own backyard
next year—or at least to our own
PCA Zone. I’m talking about Porsche
Parade, which returns to the West
next summer, specifically Salt Lake
City. Yes, I know I’ve written about this
recently, so I’ll stop now. You’ll be seeing
the Parade publicity articles appear
within these pages soon enough!
Back to the subject of the newsletter,
we have some exciting content
in the pipeline. So even though there
won’t be many events to report on
over the next couple of months, High
Gear will still bring you an evening’s
worth of reading enjoyment as you
warm yourself by the fire this winter.
Among the upcoming stories are a
member caravan to Miller Motorsports
Park in Utah, coverage of the Concorso
Italiano (which, despite the name, actually
included some Porsches), a pair
of RMR members’ Porsches with some
unusual powertrains, and a wrap-up of
October’s “Cones Are a-Fallin’” autocross,
which just missed the cutoff for
this issue. So stay tuned—and consider
sending in your own stories as well!
The pipeline can never be too full...
On a final note, hopefully this issue
will reach most of you in time to inform
you of the November membership social,
which (if all goes well) will include
a screening of the film “Senna.” Details
on the opposite page—see you there!
November 2011

membership musings Nancy Warren, Membership Chair
The real driving
season is done... winter
weather is on the
way... now is the time
for upgrades, maintenance
and storage for
our Porsches, and the
“other” car gets more time on the road.
The RMR/AMR events remaining in the
season will be membership socials and
the annual RMR Holiday party.
Thanksgiving is this month, and we
should all be thankful for what we have!
And please try to remember those who
are less fortunate. A big “thank you” to
all the club members who volunteered
their time to help pack holiday food
boxes at Sister Carmen Community
Center. We had a good turnout and lots
of fun, and we packed many grocery
bags in the process!
Here are some statistics about membership.
Nationally, the Porsche Club of
America now has over 60,000 primary
members and over 105,000 total members!
PCA is the largest single-marque
car club in the world and is averaging
225 new members per month. RMR has
1270 primary members and 2170 total
members, and we continue to grow as
a region. Keep up the good work! And
please remember to renew your membership
on time...
The November membership social will
be held at the new Landmark Theaters,
theater #5 on Thursday, November
3rd. The documentary “Senna” will be
shown, and popcorn and soda will be
served! The 2012 Board nominees will
also be elected at this meeting (if no
other candidates are nominated).
The annual Holiday Party will be held
on Saturday, December 10th at the
Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
Please bring a new, unwrapped toy for
“Toys for Tots.” A cash or check donation
will also be accepted. “Toys for
Tots” is a charitable program founded
by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. They
have been providing happiness and
hope to disadvantaged children during
each holiday season since 1947. We will
have two Marines as our special guests.
Happy Thanksgiving... hope to see
YOU at an event soon!
2012 board slate change
When I was age
Then one summer
his brand-new 912. I stuffed my lanky
we made it to the end of the block. Needless
to say, I didn’t renew Hot Rod.
Registration Team!
Although the 2011 driving season is drawing
to a close, we are already looking forward
to another great year coming up in 2012!
Whether maneuvering cones in an autocross,
keeping track of the “rules of the road” in a
rallye, or trying to hit every apex with precision
at a DE, our events would not be possible
without the help of volunteers. The registrar
works closely with the event chair as well as
the chief driving instructors and track control,
so that we know how many people are coming,
what they’re driving, and whether they
are a newcomer or PCA veteran.
Are you interested in understanding more
about how PCA events function? Do you like
meeting new people? Do you enjoy sharing
your passion for Porsches and driving with
others? If so, the registration committee is
looking for you! We need committee members
to help in two different capacities: preevent
organization and on-site registration. If
you are interested in helping on the registration
committee or would like to learn more
Apply for Instructor Training!
The Alpine and Rocky Mountain Regions are looking
for experienced Driver Ed. drivers to apply for
the 2012 Driving Instructor program. As an instructor
candidate, you will be joining an exceptional
group of people. The RMR/AMR instructor corps
has impressive expertise and plays a key role in
the success of our Driver Education program. It will
be a most rewarding experience for you.
If you volunteer and join this hardy, hard-working
group of knowledgeable instructors, you will be
passing on what you have learned to other new
members of our club. You will be instilling in students
the technical aspects of what this wonderful
passion for track driving is really all about.
To apply for Instructor Training, fill out the application
trails to hike at Point Lobos State
And, oh, by the way, there were
hundreds upon hundreds of pristine
Porsches, a famous track called Mazda
Raceway Laguna Seca, and an event
named the Porsche Rennsport Reunion
Get the picture?!
While getting to and being in the area
was half the fun, the Porsche Rennsport
Why? It was all about seeing the cars

people behind them—drivers, visionaries,
engineers, mechanics and their
owners.
Many of you have gone to Formula
One, IndyCar and even NASCAR races
and it’s the usual drill: fight traffic, get
your parking spot, walk a mile to the
gate, shop for some souvenirs, grab
your beverage of choice and a hot dog
(or in my case, a giant turkey leg for
each hand!), walk over people to find
your grandstand seat, watch the race
and sit in traffic once it’s over.
The Rennsport Reunion experience
is so different and so much better!
There’s minimal and mostly Porsche
traffic, a short five minute walk to the
gate, and then it dawns on you that you
have to plan your day—there was so
much to experience!
national anthems played, Co-Grand
Marshall Jerry Seinfeld humorously
commented over the PA system before
dropping the green flag, “I’d like to
thank the 28 people in the grandstand
for coming today!” It’s true—there
weren’t many in the stands because the
other thousands of people were all busy
doing everything else!
There were so many options; here are
a few...
Do we focus on racing, check out the
driving line and the braking points of
the track, and watch a 917 dive through
the famous “Corkscrew” turns? The
track was “hot” the entire day, with
eight run groups of historic one-of-akind
race cars, several of which are valued
at several million dollars. And they
were racing fender-to-fender—are you
kidding me? Who would have thought
that the “slower” Gmünd Cup group,
featuring 356-era Porsches, would be so
fun to watch, as the drivers were feverishly
working their steering wheels to
keep them on the racing line? But they
were.
Or do we explore Porsche Park in the
Paddock? The new 2012 Porsche 911
(991) made its North American debut.
Around the corner were the legendary
935’s “Moby Dick” and “Baby” from
1977-78. You could get in line to grab
an autograph from the only American
Porsche factory driver Patrick Long, or
the other Co-Grand Marshall Norbert
Singer, Vic Elford, Indy 500 champion
Danny Sullivan, David Murry, LeMans
winner Derek Bell, Arie Luyendyk, David
Donohue and Hurley Haywood to name
a few (there were more than 50 in
total).
How about checking out “Cayman
Island” and the Porsche Corral, where
several hundred mint Porsches of registered
spectators were parked in neat
rows? Turbos, GT3’s and GT3 RS’s were
a “dime-a-dozen.”
Then there were the souvenir stands
and rows of vendors that you see advertised
in Porsche magazines. Porsche
fanatics grabbed most of the available
courtesy Porsche Cars North America, Inc.
souvenirs on Friday, as
they were sold out of most
items by noon on Saturday!
One could take up to a
full day to walk through
the racers’ paddock,
with over 300 incredible
Porsches to see. Look,
touch, read the signage
for each—and talk to
the friendly owners and
drivers—amazing. Even
more amazing was that
they would fire up these
very expensive collector
cars and pull out when it
was their time to go to the
awesome display of race
cars and memorabilia.
Our Rocky Mountain Region was wellrepresented
by drivers Alan Benjamin
and Alex Welch and their Porsches.
Alan’s 1995 GT2 Evo was displayed
with 20 other significant historic race
cars in the fascinating Porsche History
of Racing exhibit. A hint as to why it
was selected: It was the 1995 season
overall winner of the Speed World
Challenge; it won its class at the prestigious
Daytona and Sebring endurance
races; and it had 20 podium finishes in
25 professional races.
Another, more subtle link to RMR: At
least three of the Dyson Racing 962’s
were present, including the most-valuable-in-the-world
chassis #001, decked
out in white/orange/yellow—the one
that RMR Driving Instructor and Club
Racer Dan Mayer crewed for in his
Porsche names like Spyder, Moby
Dick, Speedster and Baby—Porsche
numbers 356, 908, 917, 934.5, 935,
962—and Porsche letters such as RSR,
GT, and RS are all starting to make
sense!
If this wasn’t enough, the Porsche
Race Car Classic was held on the
grounds of Quail Lodge on Sunday.
175 cars from the Seinfeld, Porsche AG
Museum, Ingram, and Collier Collections
were presented. It was an expensive
ticket, but proceeds went to lung
cancer research.
To sum it all up, Dave Imes of Apex
Auto Body probably said it best: “This
is crazy; it’s total sensory overload!”
We saw and learned so much about
Porsches and their incredible history
in such a short time; our respect for
Porsche and its heritage has grown
even more. Our trip to Rennsport Re-

union IV will be a special memory.
Where do we go from here? Rennsport
V will definitely be on the Carlson
calendar, and hopefully, this article will
entice you to do the same. My guess—
and this is only a guess—is that it will
be held three years from now in Atlanta
to show off Porsche’s new North American
headquarters. Any bets?
Regardless of location, Leslie and I
hope to see you there!
Diane Collier
Porsche Rennsport Reunion
occurs only every
three years and captures the
essence and purity of man
and machine. Few, if any,
marques can claim such road
racing dominance, whether
in the early years or today,
as Porsche has done and
continues to do. But the cars
are only half the story. The
drivers themselves, who fearlessly
put Porsche into countless
victory circles, were
present to tell their stories. At

Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV, fans had
the opportunity to see the cars up close
and meet the legends.
This weekend was a magical one. It
combined a perfect race track, a beautiful
countryside and picture-perfect
weather.
On the way home, I was thinking
about a story for High Gear that would
give a different perspective of the
weekend. There were so many race
cars, drivers and attendees from all
over the world, including Dr. Wolfgang
Porsche. Also present were engineers
and designers from the Porsche factory,
from the early days of the 356’s to the
unveiling of the 2012 991 Carrera S.
With this in mind, I decided to write a
story about some of the people at the
event.
Alan Benjamin from Rocky Mountain
Region was driving his 1975 Porsche
RSR 3.0 in Group 4, Carrera Trophy.
We have known Alan since he joined
RMR way back in the 1980’s. He was
delighted that Patrick Long—the first
American Porsche factory
driver in more than a
decade and three-time ALMS
GT2 Driver’s Champion—
drove his #61 1975 3-liter
RSR Beverly car. Later, I was
thrilled to introduce Patrick
Long to my husband Ron,
who was Alan’s first driving
instructor at Second
Creek Raceway. On Sunday,
Alan drove his #61 RSR in
the Carrera Trophy race,
finishing a respectable
20th out of 45 drivers. Alan
was surprised to learn his

Beverly #61 was a Concours
d’Elegance winner in Group
4, judged by Hurley Haywood,
Alwin Springer and PCA
President Manny Alban among
others. And on his daughter’s
ninth birthday, too!
One of the highlights of the
weekend was the Porsche
Paddock, hosted by Porsche
Cars North America and
Porsche AG. The unveiling of
the new 2012 Porsche 911
(991) Carrera S, race cars and
Sally Carrera from the “Cars”
film were on display for the
entire weekend. Authentic food, beer on
tap from Germany and Porsche Design
clothing and accessories were available
for purchase. At the Porsche Sport
Driving School, people could sign up for
a “GT3 Cup Car experience,” riding with
an instructor, at speed, on the Laguna
Seca track during the breaks from the
racing events.
The highlight for many were the
autograph sessions throughout the
weekend. One could meet and visit
with most of the drivers from the early
racing days to the present—including
Hurley Haywood, Jürgen Barth, Patrick
Long and David Donohue, to mention
Cecil Morris
just a few. Also present during the
weekend were Derek Bell, Vic Elford and
Chip Robinson.
Special thanks to the Porsche Club
of America for organizing the Porsche
Model-Specific Parking Corrals with
more than 1,300 Porsches! It was a
sight to see all the models parked together.
The “History of the 911” display
was exceptional. PCA hosted several
events in the hospitality tent, including
presentations by factory drivers,
autograph sessions and a visit with Dr.
Wolfgang Porsche.
Porsche engineers throughout the history
of Porsche gave a presentation to
PCAers that was incredible for
all present. They are among the
legends of engineers:
Walter Näher: Race Engineer
for the 917 from 1968-
1975
Left: The awesome 917K.
Right: Drivers Hurley Haywood
and Rob Dyson autograph charity
auction materials for Sean
Cridland (see his column on
opposite page for details).
Valentin Schäffer:
began working at Porsche in
1956 in the motorsport department
and was responsible
for designing normal
aspiration to turbocharged
engines.
Norbert Singer: his
development work included
the 917, 1973 Carrera RSR,
935’s, 936’s, the IndyCar
engine, 924GTR, 956—and
his favorite, the 962, which
won the Le Mans races. He
retired in 2004, but remains
a consultant for Porsche AG.
Albert Springer: joined Vasek
Polak in 1969 and went on to work for
Porsche Motorsports North America in
1989. He had 50 victories with the 962,
including the Löwenbräu Car driven by
Al Holbert. His advice to win races is:
Do your homework, look at the rules,
have a good time! He stated that he
really enjoyed the fans.
PCA Vice President Ruben Ledesma
ended the presentation by saying, “Your
work will live with us forever.”
As a member of the Porsche “family”
for 29 years, I couldn’t have said it
better.
Sean Cridland

in the zone Sean Cridland, PCA Zone 9 Representative
I’m starting to call
this year my “seato-shining-sea
tour”
since I’ve been on
both coasts serving
in my PCA Zone Rep
position. Last winter
I was in Las Vegas, NV, then back to
Parade in Savannah in August, then out
to Monterey, CA for Rennsport Reunion
IV just last week. And that’s not even
counting the north-to-south travel
within Zone 9.
Since I last wrote, I made a trip up to
the Salt Lake City area, where I visited
the Intermountain Region for their
annual fall Club Race/DE weekend at
Miller Motorsports Park. I can’t speak
highly enough of this event. First, MMP
is a fantastic facility—kind of like a
racer’s version of Oz—with F1-style pits,
NASCAR-style garages, an amazing 4.5mile,
25-turn course, and on and on...
Second, the Intermountain Region really
knows how to put on a great event. I’m
always impressed with how well that
little region puts on such a fantastic
event. They are truly a dedicated group
of volunteers. And, I have to admit that
I really don’t mind the long drive up
there, since it goes through some of
the most beautiful country in the world,
including the Four Corners area and
Moab, home of both Arches and Canyonlands
National Parks.
The last two years, I’ve taken my
car up to run at Bonneville, then gone
over to Miller for the PCA event. But
I’ve been so busy this year, I’ve barely
had time to drive my car, let alone do
any significant work to it. So I didn’t do
B-ville and went to Miller with the intention
to volunteer for the event. I like
working events; it’s the best way to get
to know the great people of PCA and
to learn about how events like these
work. So I ended up helping out with
registration, then doing quite a bit of
on-track instructing, a little bit with the
scales, and just general gofer-ing. As a
reward, I got to drive the pace car for
the Club Race on the last day. What a
great weekend! I want to send a special
thanks to John Hunt and Kay Koellner
for hosting me at their beautiful home
in Salt Lake. It was a great weekend.
Unfortunately, at least three factors
led to a downturn in the event’s attendance.
First, the economy. We all know
about that, although PCA numbers show
that Club Racing hasn’t really dipped
that much. Second, there was a POC
(Porsche Owners Club) event during the
same weekend, at Fontana Raceway in
California. And third, many people were
saving their resources for Rennsport
Reunion IV at Mazda Raceway Laguna
Seca in the middle of October. For next
year, Intermountain is looking at moving
their event into May so that it has
fewer conflicts with other events of its
kind. I wish them luck and success. It’s
an event I highly recommend to all PCA
members.
Just a few days after arriving home
from Utah, it was time for the Roadrunner
Region’s annual chili cook-off at
the beautiful, racing-themed home of
Roadrunners Bruce Phillips and Debra
Burns. If you live in NM, chili is not just
a flavoring, it’s a whole culture unto
itself, and it’s always amazing to see
what kind of wonderful recipes people
come up with. I’d have to say that my
favorite new items were Mac Sanford’s
two chili beers, both red and green!
A short respite, then it was off to
California for Rennsport. The previous
Rennsport Reunions were held back
east—the first at Lime Rock, and the
other two at Daytona. This year’s was
the first on the West Coast. I’ve been
wanting to attend since I first heard
of them, and I’ve wanted to visit the
racing shrine of Laguna Seca since I
was about eight years old. Who doesn’t
have the image of various historic races
as the cars spilled over the famous
Corkscrew turn?
Though it wasn’t an official Zone
9 Rep function for me, the PCA had
requested volunteers to help run the
event. So when I got there, I helped
Parking Chair David Bunch and PCA
Cayman Registry Chair Mike Souza to
lay out the parking lots for the Porsche
Corrals. Then I was up bright and early
the next two mornings, directing traffic
at the “green” lot. I saw many of you
as you came in to the lots. I was really
amazed at how many people from Zone
9 attended the event. And, I met a lot
of people from all over the country, too.
The saying really is true—it’s not just
the cars, but the people!
Once my volunteer work was done,
I took the time to visit people at the
PCA tent and to wander around looking
at the cars and meeting the drivers.
It was really amazing to see the
numbers of cars and drivers there
from the early history of Porsche in
1948 all the way up to the present. It
was really a Porsche-a-thon of sights,
sounds, people, cars, events, lectures
and discussions, and demonstrations.
The next one is in three years. I highly
recommend that you pencil it in on your
calendar and start saving your pennies
and do anything you can to be there.
WOW!
I’m not usually much of an autograph
hound, but this time around I was on a
mission. Some of you may know that
at the 2008 Escape in Albuquerque, I
auctioned off a large-format photo of
a Porsche 908 coupe that Vic Elford
signed. It brought in $1200 for the
Roadrunner Region’s charity program.
I’m out to top that, and I mean business.
I have gone through my photos
from the Watkins Glen Can-Am and
Six-Hour in 1973 and found one that I
took of George Follmer in his Porsche
917-10, had it blown up to 20x30” and
had George sign it during Rennsport.
But wait...there’s more (in my best
Ron Popeil voice). I also have the race
program from that event in 1973 and
I’ve had it autographed by most of
the drivers who were in the event and
attended Rennsport. But wait, there’s
more. Always looking for ways to get
rid of your old Panos? You’ll want to
collect this one: It’s the August 1973
issue with George Follmer on the cover,
autographed... But wait... yes, there’s
more. I knew that many of the drivers
at this year’s Rennsport didn’t start
their careers until later. So I took a 1980
issue of Christophorus for many of the
935-era drivers to sign. This is going as
a package next spring, to benefit my
home Region’s charity drive. As time
moves forward, the Roadrunner charity
chair will send out images and more information
about all of this. I hope you’ll
make a bid on this great package of
Porsche memorabilia for your collection.
As I write this, I’m packing to head
down to the Carrera Region’s signature
event, the Oktoberfiesta in Deming,
NM. They always do a great job and
everyone has lots of fun. Home a few
weeks, then it’s back up to SLC for a Parade
planning meeting, and shortly after,
the Christmas Party tour starts. Lots
and lots of driving, from sea to shining
sea and from mountains to plains to
deserts and back. I look forward to seeing
you at one of the events soon!
Looking for a 1990-1994 Porsche Carrera
4 Coupe (no cabriolet, no targa)
w/ manual trans. I am looking for a good
example of the 964 series C4 but not a 1989
(want airbags). The car will be used as a
daily driver, and I am looking for very good
or better condition with relatively low miles
(condition more important than miles). No
track cars, prefer generally stock condition
although some mods/upgrades OK. Service
records a plus, especially for any repair of
the known issues in these cars (primarily
1990-91 flywheel/clutch and head gaskets).
Have cash ready to buy if the car is right
Who strikes awe in
your heart? Who, still
treading this earth,
would make you stop
in your tracks, in rapt reverence?
Not many. We’ve become so jaded.
It seems like every qualifier for “bigger
than life” gets pulled down, inevitably,
inexorably. Actors. Artists. Athletes.
Authors. It doesn’t matter. There always
seems to be some “tell all” report or
commentary or leak. Out it comes and,
pop, the bubble’s burst.
Not when it comes to Stirling Moss.
He’s the greatest driver still living.
Yes? You agree?
I think that would make a great barroom
discussion at, say, Daytona, or
Le Mans, or Indy, or Silverstone. But
at least it wouldn’t be pock-marked by
half-baked innuendo.
When it
comes to Stirling,
it seems like it’s
all out there.
Here’s Exhibit A:
The Brit magazine
Octane, whose
subhead reads
“Fueling the passion,”
interviews
Moss in its Nov.
2011 issue, on
newsstands now.
On the table of
contents, the
listing says, “At home with the world’s
most famous racing driver.” The writer,
racing columnist Tony Dron, starts by
saying, “(He’s) so well known that I’m
determined to use my allotted hour to
fill some odd little gaps in the story...”
He does, with questions like, “His first
accident, when the back tire let go on
his Morgan three-wheeler. What really
happened?” And, “Driving the BRM V16
in 1952 at Dundrod... what was it really
like to grapple with the thing in Ulster,
59 years ago?” And, “At the 1954 Silverstone
Production Touring Cars race,
Stirling was delayed at the start when
the Jaguar MkVII’s engine apparently
would not start. Was that deliberate?”
Can you imagine? I can’t imagine
what I had for dinner last night, and I
don’t know anyone who would care.
This is all leading up to the fact that
I met him. No, not quite. But I was not
more than five feet from him, and his
lovely wife Lady Susie, at the Santa Fe
Concorso this past September. Apparently,
Mercedes-Benz flew them in for
the event, along with a 2012 MB SLS
AMG Roadster.
Here’s what happened.
My wife and I were salivating at a perfect
300 SL roadster, a 356 Speedster,
Ralph Lauren’s McLaren F1, a Chaparral
2E and a Lotus 79/1 “John Player
Special” when up sped a silver golf cart,
with the number 722 taped, in red, on
the sides and nose. I know, nice touch.
Stirling was behind the wheel. He
hopped out and strode over to a guy
standing beside a sky-blue Lotus Elite.
An original 1961 Lotus Elite, which he
actually drove to Santa Fe from Tucson.
The Lotus owner and Stirling spoke
for about five minutes. Then he started
hopping around the car, poking here,
gesturing there. And, just as fast as he
had showed up, Stirling was back in
the golf cart, Susie leaping on, just in
time, to speed off to another vehicle of
interest.
The owner of the Elite came up to me.
He stated, “Stirling said he had an Elite,
back in the day.“
Really.
“Yes, he said it was a terrible car. Terrible.”
How do you feel about that?
He shook his head. “I don’t care. My
car is an original Lotus. It’s going up in
value. I drove it here from Tucson. And I
spoke about it with Stirling Moss.”
This guy, if he ever writes an autobiography
or gets interviewed for a car
magazine—to his dying day—he will
mention his interaction with the greatest
racing driver still living. He’s probably
telling all his friends, right now.
But Stirling probably forgot what he
said, as soon as he slid that golf cart
right up to the owner of another interesting
vehicle at the Concorso.
I was going to introduce myself and
ask Stirling how the Porsche RSK he
bought recently at auction was running.
But I never had a chance. Before I
knew it, he was completely gone. Gone
to that place where idols, where living
legends, where the giants who walk this
earth, go.
The VIP tent.
Makes for a great story.

High Gear is printed in Englewood, CO by
what we do
Whether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have
fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses,
rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more. Each year RMR organizes a variety of opportunities
to enjoy and learn about your Porsche.
Tour
A tour is a non-competitive driving event
in which participants follow a given route to a
destination (which may or may not be known
in advance). A tour may vary in length from a
day trip to a long weekend with an overnight
stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes
(which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit
interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are
sometimes combined with rallies to add variety
and a dose of competition to the event.
RMR hosts at least one tour each year; AMR
typically offers several. A number of tours are
usually offered at Porsche Parade as well.
Rally
A rally is a competitive event in which contestants
attempt to follow a course specified
by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically
run on public, paved roads, and speed limits
are always observed. The two major types
of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD)
rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally,
participants attempt to follow the instructions
precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as
points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints
(the locations of which are not known
in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is
typically a bit less rigid and usually involves
solving puzzles of some type.
Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at
least one of each type—are offered.
Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and
sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.
Autocross (AX)
An autocross is a competition in which
drivers navigate their cars through a course
defined by orange cones, usually in a large
parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate,
topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher
than second gear for many cars). Competing
cars are spaced at long intervals—typically
only one or two cars are on the course at any
time. Autocross is a safe way to experience
high-performance driving while learning to
drive your car at its limit.
Together, RMR and AMR host several autocross
events each year, including Eiskhana
(essentially an autocross on the ice!) in the
Membership Social
Membership socials provide an opportunity
to reconnect with old friends and meet new
members. Historically, a membership meeting
begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed
by the evening’s program. The content
of the program varies, sometimes featuring a
“slide show” from a recent event, or a guest
speaker such as accomplished Speed World
Challenge racer Randy Pobst.
RMR’s membership socials, unless otherwise
stated, are held the first Thursday of the
month. Different venues and topics will keep
the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch High
Gear and the RMR Web site for details. And if
you have any ideas for a program, talk to the
Program Committee Chair or a Board member!
Tech Session
A tech session is just what it sounds like—a
session in which a technical topic is discussed.
Not just for gearheads, a tech session may
demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself” procedures
such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions
are usually presented by experienced Porsche
Driving Events
Non-Driving Events
winter and an AX school in the spring. Additionally,
autocross is a major event at Porsche
Parade.
Driver Education (DE)
A driver education event provides a safe,
controlled environment for high-performance
driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill
levels the opportunity to hone their driving
skills, with the help of an experienced instructor,
in a controlled, closed-course environment.
In keeping with PCA philosophy, the
primary emphasis at all times is on safety. A
word of warning, though: the DE experience
may be habit-forming!
As DE events are not racing, nor preparation
for racing, lap times are not recorded. However,
some DE events are followed immediately
by a time trial event, which gives drivers
a chance to quantify their performance. Lap
times may then be used to measure personal
improvement, for bragging rights, etc.
RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains
Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at
the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future)
Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.
Club Race
A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing
event. A race weekend consists of a number of
practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions),
often involving both “sprint” and “endurance”
races. As a Club Racing license (issued by
PCA National) is required for competition, club
racers are serious and experienced drivers.
The cars they bring with them to the track can
be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the
PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated
with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere”
club race at Second Creek in 1992.
Because of the logistics involved in an
event of this magnitude, a club race requires
a legion of volunteers. However, a club race is
also one of most exciting events to participate
in, so be sure to sign up!
RMR hosts one club race each year at High
Plains Raceway which, combined with a Driver
Education event, adds up to one thrilling
weekend!
technicians, many of whom are sponsors of
RMR events and High Gear.
RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year,
typically in the “off months” when few driving
events take place. In addition, numerous tech
sessions are offered at Porsche Parade.
Concours d’Elegance
A concours is essentially a car show, in
which contestants endeavor to present their
cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible.
A number of judged categories usually
exist, typically differentiating between types of
cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation
(“daily driver” or “full preparation” or
somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may
be entered as “display only,” for owners who
wish to participate but not compete.
RMR participates in a handful of local
concours events each year, including the
annual Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours
d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy
Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also
hosts a major concours each year.
