Rennsport Reunion IV October 14-16, 2011 “Rennsport” means “racing” in German Location Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Monterey, CA: A very technical 2.24-mile track featuring a dramatic 300-foot elevation change and 11 turns, including the famous “Corkscrew” at Turns 8 and 8A. The Porsche racing team of Flying Lizard Motorsports also had an awesome display of race cars and memorabilia. Our Rocky Mountain Region was wellrepresented by drivers Alan Benjamin and Alex Welch and their Porsches. Alan’s 1995 GT2 Evo was displayed with 20 other significant historic race cars in the fascinating Porsche History of Racing exhibit. A hint as to why it was selected: It was the 1995 season overall winner of the Speed World Challenge; it won its class at the prestigious Daytona and Sebring endurance races; and it had 20 podium finishes in 25 professional races. Another, more subtle link to RMR: At least three of the Dyson Racing 962’s were present, including the most-valuable-in-the-world chassis #001, decked out in white/orange/yellow—the one that RMR Driving Instructor and Club Racer Dan Mayer crewed for in his spare time a few years ago. Porsche names like Spyder, Moby Dick, Speedster and Baby—Porsche numbers 356, 908, 917, 934.5, 935, 962—and Porsche letters such as RSR, GT, and RS are all starting to make sense! If this wasn’t enough, the Porsche Race Car Classic was held on the grounds of Quail Lodge on Sunday. 175 cars from the Seinfeld, Porsche AG Museum, Ingram, and Collier Collections were presented. It was an expensive ticket, but proceeds went to lung cancer research. To sum it all up, Dave Imes of Apex Auto Body probably said it best: “This is crazy; it’s total sensory overload!” We saw and learned so much about Porsches and their incredible history in such a short time; our respect for Porsche and its heritage has grown even more. Our trip to Rennsport Re-
union IV will be a special memory. Where do we go from here? Rennsport V will definitely be on the Carlson calendar, and hopefully, this article will entice you to do the same. My guess— and this is only a guess—is that it will be held three years from now in Atlanta to show off Porsche’s new North American headquarters. Any bets? Regardless of location, Leslie and I hope to see you there! Diane Collier Porsche Rennsport Reunion occurs only every three years and captures the essence and purity of man and machine. Few, if any, marques can claim such road racing dominance, whether in the early years or today, as Porsche has done and continues to do. But the cars are only half the story. The drivers themselves, who fearlessly put Porsche into countless victory circles, were present to tell their stories. At Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV, fans had the opportunity to see the cars up close and meet the legends. This weekend was a magical one. It combined a perfect race track, a beautiful countryside and picture-perfect weather. On the way home, I was thinking about a story for High Gear that would give a different perspective of the weekend. Also present were engineers and designers from the Porsche factory, from the early days of the 356’s to the unveiling of the 2012 991 Carrera S. With this in mind, I decided to write a story about some of the people at the event. Alan Benjamin from Rocky Mountain Region was driving his 1975 Porsche RSR 3.0 in Group 4, Carrera Trophy. We have known Alan since he joined RMR way back in the 1980’s. He was delighted that Patrick Long—the first American Porsche factory driver in more than a decade and three-time ALMS GT2 Driver’s Champion— drove his #61 1975 3-liter RSR Beverly car. Later, I was thrilled to introduce Patrick Long to my husband Ron, who was Alan’s first driving instructor at Second Creek Raceway. On Sunday, Alan drove his #61 RSR in the Carrera Trophy race, finishing a respectable 20th out of 45 drivers. Alan was surprised to learn his
