presidential thoughts Rick Gonçalves, President
In last month’s article,
I wrote about what a
surprise the Porsche
cars really are, and
said that this month
I would write about
the surprise the
Porschephiles gave me.
Before becoming an “in-chassis
Porschephile,” meaning one who actually
owns a Porsche, and only dreaming about
owning a Porsche, I held those cars in
the highest esteem, and I had a picture of
Porsche owners as millionaires who dress
in tuxes and drive to the casinos of Monte
Carlo—like James Bond and his Aston
Martin. Kind of a stupid thought, I know!
I mean, how on earth can you drive to
Monte Carlo from here? Quite seriously,
though, I thought Porsches and Porsche
owners were rather untouchable.
That vision began to fog, of course,
when I finally bought my first Porsche, the
’84 Carrera. After all, I thought of myself
as being kind of an ordinary person. But
still, I felt odd, because now I figured that
people were looking at me in the same
way as my impression of Porsche owners
had always been, and that just wasn’t
true—I was just an ordinary guy who
loved Porsches! That’s why I resisted
joining the club for over four years after
I bought the Carrera, even though a
business acquaintance at the City of
Denver kept at me all that time to join. He
was an ordinary guy, but still…
It was when I drove to tennis practice
one morning in that Guards Red Carrera
and George Peabody, who was on my
team, saw my car, approached me and
said, “You know, you should join the
Porsche Club!”
“Why?” I asked.
He replied that he was a member, that
he had a 968, that there were great people
and you could get into racing around the
track! Racing? Did he say racing? I’m
sure George said the correct thing—that
I could learn to drive my car around the
race track at very high speeds as the car
was designed for—but I heard
“racing.” It would be later that I would
learn the difference between racing
and driver education, but, nonetheless,
George’s comment piqued my interest,
and I joined the club. Besides, I was
starting to notice that George certainly
wasn’t some hoity-toity who sauntered off
to Monte Carlo all the time. I don’t think
he even goes to Las Vegas much! So I
considered him pretty down-to-earth.
The first membership meeting I went
to was the first part of my surprise!
Everyone was friendly, engaged me in
conversations on how I got my car, what
kind it was, when did I get it, etc. They
were all such fun-loving, interesting
people of all ages and just your basic
all-American ordinary people! No one
there was even wearing a tux! I think
it was June and everyone encouraged
me to sign up for the next driving event,
although I didn’t really need to be talked
into it.
So I signed up for my first driver
education event at Pueblo. Besides the
sheer adrenaline rush of actually driving a
Porsche on the track at 100-plus miles per
hour, that event opened my eyes to the
second part of my surprise—the paddock
was full of just ordinary, fun-loving Porsche
owners out to have a great two days at
the track driving their fantastic cars as
fast as they wanted (or, for some, as fast
as their instructors wanted, whichever
was slower). People of all walks of life
were represented. Teachers, lawyers,
engineers, stock brokers, independently
wealthy—you name it! And cars of all
types were represented, from 356s and
914s to the then-modern 993s. It was just
incredible to see how how friendly and
helpful this diverse group of people was
and how much fun they were having! And
no one was even wearing a tux!
That, then, was my second surprise.
And what a pleasant surprise it was and
has been! This club is full of great funloving
people who love their equally great
and awesome cars!
NOVEMBER
MEMBERSHIP
SOCIAL
13,000 square feet of pure power,
precision, performance and passion
The next Membership Social will be Nov. 8th at 6pm at RaceKraft & Design in Englewood
(see their ad on page 16 of this publication). The shop is a really cool cross between a
race shop and a restoration shop. It is massive, meticulously clean, and well lit. They
have some interesting cars in storage, in for service, race builds or restoration, plus
an engine building “clean room” and some top notch machining equipment. They will
have break-out groups for people to ask questions and hear about car building and high
performance ideas. Parking is ample on the street with a few handicap spots near the
shop entrance and there will be the usual adult beverages and snacks. It is also the RMR
Election meeting, so please be there to cast your votes!
Last month’s RMR-PCA social was merged with the Oktoberfest at Prestige Imports.
Over 1,000 people showed up for free Bavarian style food, beer, wine and plenty of
German festivities! Once again, it was a smashing success.
The place I used to
work had a saying:
“If we did something
amazing but nobody
captured it in words or
pictures, then it’s like it
never happened at all”.
Please don’t let this travesty befall the RMR
Porsche club. We do all kinds of awesome
events, get-togethers and festivities, but I
cannot get them recorded for posterity nor
shared amongst our entire membership if I
don’t have content in the form of a simple
write-up or a few photos. So, please send
me a quick paragraph or two and deluge my
In-box with photos from an event you were
at that somehow involved a Porsche or two
so I can get it included in HighGear.
A great way to start is to feature your
car “In the Spotlight,” which is a whole
page dedicated to you and YOUR Porsche
in each and every issue of HighGear. All of
us have some sort of story about how you
obtained the keys to that Stuttgart special
in your driveway. When we get together, the
stories come pouring out about how, where
and when you found that exact Porsche. If
you are proud of your car, then please share
your tale with the rest of us and show off
that German-made beauty. Shoulder your
humility, shyness, or fear of typing you may
have and offer your constituents a glimpse
into how that car found its way into your
garage. I promise you, we’ll make it turn out
spectacularly.
In December, the annual RMR holiday
party and awards ceremony beckons with
a gala event in downtown Denver.
January calls us to a daredevil event on
a frozen lake called Eiskhana. All vehicles
are welcome as their drivers test their skills
on a snowy, slick and slippery surface while
wide-eyed witnesses revel in the spectacle,
The Porsche Breakfast Club continues to
meet all year long on the second Saturday
of each month at the Village Inn on Colorado
Blvd. just north of I-25. If you find you still
need your Porsche fix and the blogs and
chatrooms just don’t fill the bill, then
gather around with your fellow lack-of-fairweather
sufferers and wax poetic about all
things Porsche until you burst.
I can also tell you that members of
your prestigious and prodigious Board of
Directors have been working diligently
behind the scenes to secure another year
jam-packed with adventures for you and
your Porsche. Recently, members of the
RMR met with members of the AMR to
coordinate schedules and help one another
in as many ways as possible.
What this means to you, dear reader, is
that you will have plenty of events to sign
up for and participate in. Just don’t forget to
share your story and photos about it!
The driving season has come to a “screeching
halt” for 2012. Now is the time to do those
repairs and upgrades to your “baby” so she
is ready for next year’s driving season.
We do have one event remaining for the
year. Don’t miss out on the annual Holiday
Party. This year the party is being held at
the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver. Registration is still open
on motorsportreg.com. We will have two U.S. Marines as our
special guests to collect toys for their “Toys for Tots” program.
Feel free to share the spirit of the holiday season by bringing a
new, unwrapped toy for “Toys for Tots” and help someone less
fortunate celebrate the holiday season. Cash or check donations
will also be accepted.
EIGHT CANDIDATES
EIGHT BOARD POSITIONS
Meet your (unopposed) RMR 2012 Board of Director Nominees!
Rick Gonçalves, Nominee for President
I was 18 when I first became infatuated with Porsches. Randy Hoch (former RMR President and long-time member) and I used
to sit around in the dorms up at CU discussing them. It wasn’t until ‘94, however, that I finally got my first Porsche—an ‘84 911
Carrera. I finally joined the club in 1998 and started Club Racing the next year, after having done every DE possible. Since then,
I realize how much the club has helped me learn, and I now understand so much about these wonderful and almost magical
cars. I started becoming very active in the club. For six years, I was the program chairman, after which I was elected to the
board as Secretary, then Treasurer, Second Vice President, Vice President and most recently as President. As President, I see
new challenges to address. Continuing to improve the status and satisfaction level of the Club Race is one. I would also like
to implement the committee format for DEs to provide better continuity of events, thereby producing a more pleasurable and
rewarding experience. The greatest challenge, however, will be to increase enjoyment for all club members in the wide variety of
events that we hold—rallies, autocrosses, tours, concours, car club gatherings, and DEs, while at the same time trying to reduce,
or at least stabilize, increasing costs. To do this, I look forward to working with the excellent proposed slate of officers and with
the club’s hard-working committee members and volunteers.
Jim Widrig, Nominee for 1st Vice President
I have been a member of RMR since 2004, when we took our 1st tour to the Black Hills in a newly restored 1969 911E. I have
been a member of the RMR Board since 2009, having served as Treasurer for 2009 and 2010, 2nd Vice President for 2011, and
1st Vice president for 2012. In 2012 we expanded our volunteer standing committees with another team of volunteers to run our
Driver Education Events throughout the year. As a member of the RMR board, we have all seen and worked through changes
necessitated by the construction and development of the track at High Plains Raceway, funded new amenities, and provided
direction on continuous improvements in the manner in which events are managed for the club. We will continue to look for
ways to increase the types of events, involve more volunteer members in running club events and activities, appeal to a greater
number of club members, and have a huge amount of fun! I would like to continue my contribution to serve the club as your 1st
Vice President in 2013. In this role, I will be managing communication and assisting other board members and volunteer groups.
As many of you have heard me say, this is a club of volunteers, and without your assistance, the events and meetings that we all
enjoy so very much would not be possible. I look forward to seeing you at an event soon, and welcome you to volunteer and to
help out in or run an event in 2013.
John Mackin, Nominee for 2nd Vice President
I have been a Porsche owner since 1976 and a PCA member since 1981. I currently own a 1986 Iris Blue 911 Cabriolet which I
bought new. Last year, I also acquired a 2003 Lapis Blue Carrera 4. I have been a member of three previous regions (First Settlers,
Potomac and Connecticut Valley) before moving to Colorado in 1994. I have been an active DE participant since 1999 and am
currently a DE Instructor. My wife Florence and I have been to six Parades and we were Banquet Chairs for the 2009 Colorado
Parade. I was also awarded Region Patron award in 2006. I will be assuming the duties of National Parade Banquet Chair in 2014.
My professional background is as a career Nuclear Submarine Officer, IT Manager, small business owner and consultant in the
nuclear field. I am currently transitioning in retirement. I served as your RMR Treasurer in 2006 and 2007, Membership Chair in
2008 and 2009 and 2nd Vice President in 2012. I look forward to continuing my service to the Rocky Mountain Region.
Roger Buswell, Nominee for Treasurer
When I was a teenager, I was a subscriber to Hot Rod magazine and dreamed of Mopar Hemi drag racers. Then one summer
afternoon in 1968, my dad’s best friend showed up at our Omaha home, driving his brand new 912. I stuffed my lanky frame into the
back “seat” and off we went in search of Mexican food. I was in love with everything Porsche by the time we made it to the end of
the block. Needless to say I didn’t renew Hot Rod. Since then I’ve been to business school, earned my CFP® license (practicing
for over 35 years), am a devoted father and grandfather and I’m married to my soul mate and second wife, Deneen. She isn’t a
car person at all yet we have a wonderful marriage. I have been involved with RMR as Advertising Coordinator, three-time event
chair for the June Rock ‘N’ Roll DE, three-time flag chief for the annual Porsche Club Race, member of the Control Committee and
sundry other RMR tasks that I love doing. I founded the Porsche Breakfast Club about five years ago. I’m also involved with SCCA
as a corner worker and withy Rocky Mountain Sidewinders. I’ve been treasurer of a large service club foundation. This will be
my second year as RMR Treasurer. My car is a 1982 911SC that is notoriously known as “the car in infinite rehab.”
Scott Henderson, Nominee for Secretary
I guess we all have a first experience with a Porsche that sent us on the path that results in being
a part of this Club. Mine occurred in the 7th grade. As a classmate and I were going home from Cheyenne Mountain
Junior High School, he told me that his dad had just bought a Porsche: a red 1965 356C cabriolet. That night, I got to ride
in the back seat with them as his son said, “Come on, Dad, show him what it’s got!” His father had been plodding along
and finally submitted with a heavier foot. Wow! The sound of the motor, the feel around the turns—I had been bitten.
A few years later while in high school, I walked into the VW dealership in Eau Gallie, Florida. The salesman asked if
he could help me. Knowing the roots of the marque, I announced that I wanted to order a “bug” with a Porsche motor.
I was floored when I was told that was not possible. As the years went by, the purchase price of a Porsche went up
much faster than my income. I continued to be a window-shopper. I finally bought my first Porsche in 2006—a 2003 C2
cab. Now, on my fourth Porsche, an air-cooled car, I have had a taste of the new and the old. Having been a member
of RMR for more than five years, I have enjoyed these fine automobiles with some of the best people I have ever
met. The camaraderie and friendships are some of the most meaningful I can imagine. There is so much commitment
demonstrated by the continuous volunteer work that others have done that I am prepared to contribute, too. Being
asked to serve as Secretary of this Club for the next term is an honor. With your permission and support, I will do so—
hopefully, in a way that honors you and our Club.
Nancy Warren, Nominee for Membership Chair
I have been an RMR member since 2002, shortly after we purchased our ’98 Boxster. Since driving events were not my
forte, I started volunteering to help out at the events where I was usually tagging along anyway. Gate duty, noon-time
rides, rally checkpoints, assisting with timing at DEs and Autocrosses, grid, social chair and DE registration at Club
Race, and co-chair of several events. All this has certainly kept me busy! I also serve on the Charity and Registration
Committees. I have driven several driving events in the last year or so; they are fun but, still not my thing! We enjoy
“touring” in our ’02 Carrera and have been on a variety of tours with the Porsche Breakfast Club, Alpine Mountain and
Roadrunner Regions and several tours at Parades and Escapes. We recently toured Amarillo, Lubbock, Midland and
El Paso Texas; we have now visited all seven regions in Zone 9 this year! As Membership Chair, I have responded to
many questions about membership and Porsches. I send out welcome letters to the new and transferred members.
I also send letters to renewing members, reminding them to pay their dues. I mail copies of HighGear to the newest
members each month, so they can start enjoying the club as soon as they join. I look forward to continuing my
contribution to RMR and serving as the Membership Chair again in 2013.
David Schmidt, Nominee for Newsletter Editor
I am relatively new (again) to the RMR club as my wife, Jody, and I bought our 02 Boxster S last year after a 10year
hiatus without one since we sold our ‘84 Carrera back in 2001. I have over 25 years experience as a graphic
designer and finished out my career in the military as a photojournalist and historian. I have also been working for the
government in the Visual Information field for nearly 20 years now. I took on HighGear last year as a challenge, to add
another crown jewel to my personal portfolio, and as a way to meet new people in the club. It is also helps quench
my desire to be a contributor (ideally, as a designer) for one of the automotive magazines such as Motor Trend, Car &
Driver or Road & Track, all of which I’ve subscribed to ever since puberty hit me as a kid back in Wisconsin. I’ve been
having fun creating the past five issues of HighGear and hope to continue to do so for a few years more.
Rex Heck, Past President
I have been a Porsche owner since 1980 and an RMR member since 1999. My RMR experience has enhanced my
appreciation for everything Porsche. The wide variety of events, from social where mostly what we talk about our
cars, to concours where we learn how dirty our “clean” car really is, to tours where we take leisurely drives through
the countryside, to rallies where we take not so leisurely drives through the countryside, to autocrosses (including one
on the ice at Georgetown) where we learn about cornering, to Driver Education events where we learn about faster
cornering, and to club racing where we really learn about how much we need to learn, RMR has been an enriching
experience. In my second year as past president I am looking forward to some really exciting events. The role of past
president is lower-key than the other board positions because it is mainly an advisory role instead of an active board
membership. This makes it possible to sit back and relax and enjoy the board experience.
Did you know that the United States Marine Corps program Toys for Tots has
been collecting and distributing toys to needy children since 1947? Since its
inception, Marines have distributed more than 452 million toys to more than 209
million children.
Once again, RMR will be partnering with the Marine Corps at our annual
holiday party to help them collect new toys to distribute in the Denver
Metropolitan area. Over the past 2 years, your generosity has helped the club
fill up table after table with your donations. In addition to the toys, the club has
also received sizable cash donations for the organization.
Please plan on joining us again this year for holiday cheer, but more
importantly, provide a needy child with a little something from Santa.
Cones Are a-Fallin’ Autocross Wrap-Up
Story by David Schmidt, photos by Troy Nakatani
This year’s Cones Are a-Fallin’ Autocross once again
took place at the preferred out-of-the-way gigantic
parking lot obscurely sandwiched between DIA and
Front Range Airport. October 20th proved to be a perfect
cloudy autumn day, and over 50 drivers showed up to
test their skills, hammer their cars, and try their best to
swiftly and deftly maneuver through the tightly designed
course laid out in a wandering river of orange pylons.
Chris Sulley, event chair, broke the anxious wouldbe
lead-footers into two heats with one squad driving
and the other working the course as safety monitors
and cone replacement specialists. Each group got four
runs in the morning and another four in the afternoon,
all under the ever-watchful and flawless eye of the laser
timer.
“Judging by the smiles and ‘bench-racing’ at beer
thirty, everyone enjoyed the event and all were rewarded
with a 12 ounce trophy,” Sulley said. “The popularity
of autocrossing within the club has grown over the last
few years and the credit goes to our volunteers that are
essential for coordinating and setting up the events.
Autocrossing is an excellent venue for learning car
control in a safe environment,” he added.
Thankfully, no horrific incidents took place; however,
the voluptuous Lamborghini-Yellow Noble M400 had its
bonnet unexpectedly slam open while tearing around
the track, a certain brand-new 981 Boxster S (featured
in last month’s HighGear) took on a hitchhiker in the
form of an orange cone throughout almost an entire
run, and lastly, a rather large dog of the Yellow Labrador
persuasion was seen on a few occasions swiping donuts
right out of the hands of some unsuspecting patrons.
Amongst the majority of Porsches dancing their way
through the cones, a variety of other cars representing
manufacturers from all across the globe came to play:
a couple of modern American muscle cars; some frontwheel-drivers
from Honda, Kia and Pontiac; a trickedout
Nissan 370Z; some dainty but deadly Mini Coopers
and their equally lethal BMW brethren; a pair of angry
Subaru STi’s; plus Keith Hall even rolled his Formula Ford
open-wheel racer off the trailer and proved the value of
adult-owned toys to all in attendance.
Much like the hodge-podge of cars that squealed at
least a year of quality rubber off their tires, so too was
the mix of drivers. Several attendees had never been to
an autocross before, some were novices sharpening
their skills and learning the limits of their cars, but
most seemed to be well-seasoned, experienced drivers
flogging their mechanical beasts for one last time before
winter sets in. Yet, no matter the level of expertise it was
plain to see that all participants came away with a wide
smile and plenty of awesome stories. Except maybe that
Noble owner.
November 2012
I find that my perspective as both an
enthusiast and an industry professional is
somewhat unique in the world of air-cooled
and otherwise early Porsches. Since I was
not a licensed driver until after the watercooled
911 came into being, I consider myself
an air-cooled enthusiast living in a watercooled
world.
Through my involvement in the industry,
RMR-PCA, and the resto-modding of my 1980
911 SC (and tracking of my 951), I continue to
delve deeper into the world of exotic, limitededition,
and historic Porches along with some
that may only be categorized as “Legendary.”
With every new depth I explore in this realm
of epic brand history, I am rewarded with the
discovery of visions of Porsches that otherwise
seemed unimaginable, inconceivable! I feel
like I am the automotive version of Jacques
Cousteau! Exploring deep within the Sea of
Porsche History! Finding new species of yet
unseen marine life! But woe is the naive and
unlearned explorer. For many of you have
already known that such things exist. And
indeed my findings are not noteworthy at all.
This was true for some time now, but
that period of time ended last week. I was
invited out to photograph a private track
day at High Plains Raceway, where a vast
treasure of Porsche vehicles was meant to
be on display! I was perhaps too excited for
this day, as evidenced by my 6-point speeding
ticket on the way to the racetrack. (Note that
a supercharged Audi V8 and a excited photog
should never be mixed!) Nevertheless, my
will was not diminished. I arrived at the track,
and as in my first experience at SEMA (I have
actually only been once) I barley knew where
to begin!
A 908/2 over here, a 993 GT2 EVO over
there, and—dare I say it?—a 996 GT1! A
car of which only 20 were ever made! A car
that looks as if Ferdinand Porsche was given
12
HighGear
November 2012
a 996 Turbo, a bag of medical
marijuana, and a team of engineers
and told to build a super car! The GT1
has more corners and curves than a bowl of
Udon noodles! Yet it somehow is distinctly
undeniably a Porsche 996 derivative. This
is a living legend. The fact that these Living
Legends not only exist on paper, but they exist
right here in front of me, defies my capacity
for explanation. The fact that these cars
are being tracked, risking life and wing, is
mind-blowing. This was like an out-of-body
experience.
While I can continue to write sentences
fraught with overly ambitious similes that
convey my excitement for these Living
Legends, let me now make what I promise to
be the last and most significant point of this
article. And that is while I have been seeking
to explore the depths of exotic Porsche
history, I have been swimming in a sea of
enthusiasm.
The RMR PCA chapter consistently
displays a remarkable level of well kept,
properly driven, and thoroughly exciting
Porsche vehicles. This point cannot be
overlooked. From watching track-prepped
cup cars tear HPR to pieces in this summer’s
DE, to chasing silver 997 Turbos, and C4Ss
over the Peak-to-Peak highway, every PCA
event I have ever attended has been seriously
awesome. We all are to be applauded for not
just supporting, but defining, a very strong
and very rich local car culture. And for that,
this young explorer is thankful.
While many 908/2’s spend their days gathering dust in museums, this Living
Legend still gets properly exercised at our own High Plains Raceway.

Georgetown Lake Saturday, January 19th
Eiskhana, the slickest event of the year, is a fun day to enjoy the unique
experience of driving on ice. It will be a great opportunity to test your car,
your tires and your skill.
The event will be run like an autocross; “cone chasing” will be required
when you are not driving. Since January in Georgetown is cold and often
windy, plan to dress in layers and wear warm boots, hats and gloves.
Runs will be timed for the purposes of bragging rights. Porsches are
of course welcome, but not required— feel free to bring your winter driver
with snow tires or studded tires.
No pre-tech will be required. Since speeds and g-forces are low, we
will not require top tech, but we highly recommend de-cluttering your car
before you drive.
Restroom facilities will be available, but there will be no
concessions or refreshments provided—although you could make
your own “snow cones.”
Hint from the school of (literal) hard knocks: The ice on Georgetown
Lake is very slippery. While your car won’t tip over, walking can
be hazardous. Wearing ice grippers on your feet will help you stay
upright. Upright is good.
There is no pre-registration; just show up in the morning
and register onsite.
By Walt & Kathy Fricke
Several years ago, Walt caught me
online looking at newer Porsches. Many
of us have dreams of owning a beautiful
Porsche, and this dream came true for us on
May 5th this year. We had been seriously
on the hunt for about eleven months. Our
wish list included a water-cooled Porsche
911 with the “Metzger” engine, very
comfortable seats, and lower mileage; fast
is always good but guaranteed, and it had
to be either red or speed yellow. We did
not want this car for track use because
we already have two track cars. Its main
purpose for us is to enjoy on cross-country
adventures and regional tours and the like.
The car we chose was this stunning
2007 997 Turbo in Speed Yellow. At first
glance, it left Walt and me salivating over
its perfection. We found our dream car in
Thousand Oaks, CA, and it just happened
that Walt was in Irvine, CA, at a Club Racing
Scrutineers meeting at the time. I called
him and asked if he had the time to look at
a car a friend had recommended. He said
yes, and that’s when his first adventure
with our new car began.
Walt rose early on the following sunny
Monday morning to pick up the car for the
long trek back to Colorado. It was quite
a bonding experience for him. He knew
its engine’s power, since Alan Benjamin
had let us drive his identical black 480 HP
turbo at PPIR, which meant using the cruise
control on the Interstates. At Cedar City,
Utah, after an overnight stop, he cut across
the mountains to the east to sample the
curves and amazing scenery before getting
back on I-70 for home.
Hunting down a dream...
The cream in the coffee was having
Hans-Peter and Wolfgang Porsche sign its
hood at the Porsche Parade this summer
in UT. What wonderfully accommodating
people. Nothing could get better than that.
We are looking forward to many miles
of quick and comfortable travel in this
amazing automobile.
Dang, does it EVER
let up? I mean the FUN,
of course. When I last
wrote, I was packing to
head off to the Alpine
Mountain Region’s Fall
Tour. I got to Colorado Springs late the
night before, then set off in the morning
to find the group. We had a nice breakfast
at the Monument Hill Country Club, then
received our first set of directions -- they
don’t tell you your final destination till the
late afternoon! Off we went over some of
the most beautiful roads the front range
has to offer. At lunch we found out we’d
be heading up and over Trail Ridge Road
in Rocky Mountain National Park. And on
our last stop -- in Kremmling, Colorado --
we discovered our final destination would
be Steamboat Springs. The fall colors
were at their peak and we had dinner on
top of the ski mountain at sunset time.
Their tour is truly magical and mysterious!
For the last two years, the last weekend
has been the calendar slot for the Santa Fe
Concorso, hosted just over the mountain
from us. For me, that’s been a busy
weekend since the Intermountain Region
had traditionally hosted their Club Race
that time of year. Lo and behold, this year
the IR’s moved their race to June and my
weekend was open. I attended all three
days of events as a correspondent for 9
Magazine. Wow, what a great weekend.
Organizers Dennis and Beverly Little
of Santa Fe have been working hard to
put on a show that they hope to bring
to the level of Amelia Island and Pebble
Beach. And they’re on their way. Quite
an amazing array of classic vehicles of
all sorts was on display and Sir Stirling
Moss was back again as Grand Marshall.
Local writer and racing legend Denise
McCluggage has contributed to the event
in many ways, helping to bring in stars,
cars, and dignitaries. A GRAND event it
was.
While there, I ran into my Bonneville
buddy Jeff Brock, who lives just up the
road in Abiquiu. Jeff built and
races one of the most iconic
and most photographed cars
on the web, a 1952 Buick
Super-Riviera. He was on
the Design Forum panel
discussion with former
Cadillac Design Cheif Kip
Wasenko and Pebble Beach
Overall Winner Paul Russell.
The panel was hosted by
automotive journalist and
actor Tim Consadine and was
an amazing discussion of
design trends past, present,
and outlaw! After the panel
Jeff mentioned he was
headed out to Bonneville to
participate in the last meet of
the year and wondered if I’d
like to come along. Hmmmm, I
said, let me think about that for...YES!!! Of
course I would.... So Sandra and I loaded
up all our camera stuff -- both video and
still -- and on Monday morning got up at
4am and drove...to the Santa Fe ski area,
two hundred miles out of the direct path
to Wendover. Why? To take some photos
of some beautifully classic Porsches for
a couple of stories I’m working on. (More
on that another time.) Then we turned
around and made the long drive to the
Salt Flats.
It was a great trip for all kinds of
reasons. We got some great photos and
video of Jeff’s car. To see some of the
video go to: http://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=olhJD6Qu9js
Plus I got to see my friends at Team
Vesco set a new record of 339mph with
their #444 car, the one I rode on as a skier
back in 1985. Jeff set a new class record
of 165.380 What can I say, I have “salt
fever” and there’s just no getting over it.
We made the long drive home through
Moab and the Four Corners on a
beautifully sunny day, with just enough
time to un-pack the car, download video
and stills, get cleaned up and head off
to the Roadrunner Region’s annual Chili
Cook-off. If you’ live in New Mexico, you
can’t live without your “chili-fix” and we’re
definitely addicted to the many great
flavors of red and green to be found both
in the super-hot and the deliciously sweet
dishes you always find at these kinds of
events. The cook-off is always one of the
best attended events in the Region and
is hosted in the beautiful racing-themed
home of Bruce Phillips and Debra Burns.
There’s always a great mix of new and
veteran members and this year was no
different. One of the Region’s founders
and its 1969 President, Jim Miller was on
hand for a Roadrunner event for the first
time in years to enjoy the fun!
As I write this, I’m getting ready to
head off to Las Cruces and Deming, NM
for the Carrera Region’s big event, the
Oktoberfiesta, always a good time and
one of the last warm weekends before
the winter winds blow in. It’s not that
long before I’ll be heading to some of
the holiday parties for my last official
appearances as your Zone Rep. I hope
to see you at one of those events. I look
forward to seeing you there!
Getting Your Car Ready
for Winter Storage
by David Polley, Lead Detailer at
Man Cave, Colorado
Winter is coming, and with the snow many
of us take that beloved summer vehicle
into storage. This may be at a car storage
facility or the corner of our own garage
where the car will sit and wait until spring.
We will walk past it occasionally. We
look at it, sitting there under a tarp, with
longing for warmer days. And when those
days come, we want that vehicle to just
start up and look its best so we can drive.
That, unfortunately, takes work. So what
does your car need in order to ensure that
everything is tip-top come spring? Follow
these simple tips to help ensure that your
vehicle is ready when you want it to be.
1) Ensure everything works before you
put it away.
Check out the wiper blades, turn
signals, air conditioning, radio, and any
other gadgets. Push every button and
knob. Look under the hood for any leaks.
Basically, you want first to make sure
everything is tip-top, and second to get a list
of everything that will need to be repaired
or upgrades you want installed this winter.
2) Complete routine maintenance.
Take your car in for any recommended
maintenance based on your mileage. Now
is the perfect time to get the transmission
flushed or the coolant replaced. Have your
brakes checked and your tires as well. If
you need new tires, have them installed in
the spring.
3) Top off your fluids.
Top off all of your fluids including the
coolant, transmission, brake fluid, etc. It is
especially important to have a full tank of
gas with a fuel additive before you put the
vehicle away. Moisture in the gas tank can
cause it to rust from the inside out. The rust
can break off later, clogging the fuel lines
and resulting in costly repairs.
4) Change the oil and oil filter.
Even if it does not need it, change your
oil and oil filter. As the car sits, oil will pool
at the lowest points, and contaminants in
the oil may cause it to turn to sludge. Worse
yet, any water that may be in the system
may cause corrosion. Drain the oil in your
engine until nothing else comes out, install
a fresh filter, and top off with new, clean oil.
5) Get your car detailed.
This is a task you can do yourself
or have a professional take care of. A
professional is always recommended but if
you choose to do it yourself there are a few
areas to pay particular attention to. Make
sure you remove any food items from the
vehicle as critters will find it. Put a couple
of thin coats of hard carnauba wax on your
car to help protect it from scratches when
you dust it and/or when you take your car
cover on and off. And condition all of your
leather, vinyl, and plastic inside and out to
help prevent dry rot.
6) Disconnect your battery or install
a manufacturer-recommended trickle
charger.
Nothing is worse than a car that won’t
start, especially after a long winter on
the first nice day of spring. Regardless of
whether you remove the battery or keep
it under the hood, always put a trickle
charger on the battery.
7) Keep your tires round.
Flat spots on tires can really change
the comfort of your ride. You can raise your
car with a standard lift, a scissor
lift, or good ol’-fashioned
jack stands. If this is not
an option, overinflate
your tires to the
maximum pressure
allowed by the tire
manufacturer. This
will put the least
amount of tire on the
ground. Remember
to deflate them back to
normal pressure in the spring.
8) Seal your exhaust tips and air intake
with aluminum foil.
This will keep the critters from getting
inside your engine or exhaust. Again, make
sure you remove these before you start
your car.
9) Enjoy the car when you can.
Drive your car on nice days, even if
it is just around the block. Gravity will
take its effect on all of the fluids in your
vehicle: in the engine, the wheel bearings,
transmission, axle, everywhere. Many of
these systems use the natural motion of the
systems to lubricate themselves.
If you do not have a spot in your garage
or do not want to keep up with the regular
maintenance of a stored vehicle, you can
contact your local high-end car storage
company.
In the Denver area, Man Cave Colorado
specializes not only in high-end detailing,
but also in ensuring that each vehicle in its
facility is meticulously cared for all winter
long. Starting with a professional detail,
Man Cave stores your vehicle under a
cover, keeps your battery maintained, and
routinely starts and moves the vehicles
around. In addition, their facility is set up to
make any repairs or improvements to your
car over the cold winter months. You can
reach Man Cave Colorado at 303-279-7333
The First Car
Company
to Conquer
Living Space
Ok, how many remember the ad line, “The
first to conquer living space, the Castro
Convertible”?
Didn’t think so. Here’s a hint: it’s not
about cars.
Still nothing? It’s actually a bit of a trick
question. Unless you’re of a certain age,
and from the metro NY area, it never will
mean anything to you.
But, if you are, you remember clear as
a bell the little girl in the TV commercials,
who would gleefully unfold a bed, like
magic, out of what looked like a normal
sofa. And you’re probably humming the
accompanying song, right now.
We’ve come a long way in the 50 or so
years since the advent of the convertible
bed. In fact, the road has led us all the way
to “en suite parking.” That’s right, being
able to drive your car right up to your
apartment in the sky, where that sofa bed
is waiting for you... and a lot more.
The Wall Street Journal, in a story on Oct.
5, 2012, featured several buildings going up
or completed in select urban jungles that
provide just this convenience.
In New York, the structure at 200 11th
Avenue is a 19-story building with 14 units.
Residents drive into an enclosed stainlesssteel
elevator, which runs alongside the
building. In less than a minute, they drive
out the opposite end, and into their very
own garage, adjacent to their unit. The
HighGear
November 2012
elevator is located behind two one-footthick
concrete walls, two stairwells and a
hallway… all to minimize noise.
And the living spaces range from 2,000 to
5,000 square feet. They’ve sold for under
$3 million to $32 million.
In Singapore, Hamilton Scotts is a
30-story condo with 56 units. The driver
inches onto an 18-by-9-foot pallet in
the basement and engages a biometric
scanner that reads his thumbprint and
activates the elevator to lift the vehicle
to the unit’s “en suite car garage.” The
resident then rides up a different elevator,
one presumably just for foot traffic. To
retrieve the car, the owner reverses the
process.
Units start at roughly $7.9 million.
But the best is a development due to
open in January 2014: Porsche Design
Tower, in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, about
18 miles north of Miami Beach on Collins
Avenue.
That’s right, your favorite design division
of your favorite car company is now
venturing into real estate, partnering with
a South Florida developer.
According to the Journal story, here’s
how it will work. The resident drives to a
spot where a transponder in the car tells
the lift system to deliver both car and driver
to their unit. A robotic arm then raises the
car three inches, moving it into a glasswalled
elevator. The arm then deposits
the car and driver into their garage space.
This tap dance is supposed to take 45 to 90
seconds.
To reverse the process, a touch-screen
system lets residents call back their car,
and gives an estimate of when it will be
delivered.
According to published reports, the
57-story tower will have 132 units, ranging
from 4,200 to 14,000 square feet, and
varying in price from $3.9 million to $21
million. Each residence will have at least
two parking spaces; large residences will
have four… adding up to a total of 284
robotic parking spaces.
And residents will be able to view their
pride and joys from their living rooms.
Amenities include a pool on nearly every
balcony, an on-site spa and see-through
floor plans with ocean and intracoastal
views.
Interested? You’d better hurry. The
Porsche Design Tower Sales Center is
now open, right next door to the site. The
center provides “dollhouse” models of
each residence and demonstrates the
“sky garage” technology using high-tech
videography.
One report quotes the developer as
saying the building is expected to serve
as a catalyst for other Porsche Design
Towers around the globe. “There are very
few buildings which can truly say they will
have inspired and transformed an industry,
but this will genuinely be one of those.”
That’s right. The next frontier… the first
to conquer vehicular living space. First it
was sports cars, then SUVs, then sedans…
and now, places to put the toys… mancaves
in the sky.
What’s next? Porsche Design vehicular
space travel?
Who knows? What I do want to know
is, who are the people who are buying
these units? And how can I become one
of them?

what we do
Whether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in
your Porsche by particip ating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech
sessions, car shows and more. Each year RMR organizes a variety of opportunities to enjoy and learn about
your Porsche.
Tour
A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which
participants follow a given route to a destination
(which may or may not be known in advance). A tour
may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend
with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow
scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/
or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are
sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a
dose of competition to the event.
RMR hosts at least one tour each year; AMR
typically offers several. A number of tours are usually
offered at Porsche Parade as well.
Rally
A rally is a competitive event in which contestants
attempt to follow a course specified by a set of
instructions. Rallies are typically run on public,
paved roads, and speed limits are always observed.
The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-
Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD
rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions
precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points
are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations
of which are not known in advance) early or late. A
Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually
involves solving puzzles of some type.
Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at
least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade
also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally,
each year.
Autocross (AX)
An autocross is a competition in which drivers
navigate their cars through a course defined by orange
cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are
generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH
(no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing
cars are spaced at long intervals—typically only one
or two cars are on the course at any time. Autocross
is a safe way to experience high-performance driving
while learning to drive your car at its limit.
Together, RMR and AMR host several autocross
Membership Social
Membership socials provide an opportunity to
reconnect with old friends and meet new members.
Historically, a membership meeting begins with a
social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s
program. The content of the program varies, sometimes
featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest
speaker such as accomplished Speed World Challenge
racer Randy Pobst.
RMR’s membership socials, unless otherwise
stated, are held the first Thursday of the month.
Different venues and topics will keep the meetings
fresh and inviting. Watch High Gear and the RMR
Web site for details. And if you have any ideas for a
program, talk to the Program Committee Chair or a
Board member!
Tech Session
A tech session is just what it sounds like—a session
in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for
gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical,
“do-it-yourself” procedures such as brake bleeding.
Tech sessions are usually presented by experienced
Driving Events
Non-Driving Events
events each year, including Eiskhana (essentially an
autocross on the ice!) in the winter and an AX school
in the spring. Additionally, autocross is a major event
at Porsche Parade.
Driver Education (DE)
A driver education event provides a safe, controlled
environment for high-performance driving instruction.
DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to
hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced
instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment.
In keeping with PCA philosophy, the primary emphasis
at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though:
the DE experience may be habit-forming!
As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for
racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some
DE events are followed immediately by a time trial
event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their
performance. Lap times may then be used to measure
personal improvement, for bragging rights, etc.
RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains
Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La
Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak
International Raceway tracks.
Club Race
A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event. A race
weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and
“heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint”
and “endurance” races. As a Club Racing license
(issued by PCA National) is required for competition,
club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The
cars they bring with them to the track can be quite
impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing
program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First
Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.
Because of the logistics involved in an event of this
magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers.
However, a club race is also one of most exciting
events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!
RMR hosts one club race each year at High Plains
Raceway which, combined with a Driver Education
event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!
Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of
RMR events and High Gear.
RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically
in the “off months” when few driving events take
place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered
at Porsche Parade.
Concours d’Elegance
A concours is essentially a car show, in which
contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close
to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged
categories usually exist, typically differentiating
between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level
of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation”
or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be
entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to
participate but not compete.
RMR participates in a handful of local concours
events each year, including the annual Exotic Sports
Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United
Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade
also hosts a major concours each year.
Amy Legg-Rogers, Historian
The January, 1987 club newsletter ran this article about the new-back then Porsche road carriers. Apparently, buyers got upset
when their new sports cars arrived riddled with road rash and splattered with mosquitoes.
