membership musings Nancy Warren, Membership Chair The driving season has come to a “screeching halt” for 2012. Now is the time to do those repairs and upgrades to your “baby” so she is ready for next year’s driving season. We do have one event remaining for the year. Don’t miss out on the annual Holiday Party. This year the party is being held at the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver. Registration is still open on motorsportreg.com. We will have two U.S. Marines as our special guests to collect toys for their “Toys for Tots” program. Feel free to share the spirit of the holiday season by bringing a new, unwrapped toy for “Toys for Tots” and help someone less fortunate celebrate the holiday season. Cash or check donations will also be accepted. Thousands of members, millions of admirers! Did you know there are 139 regions of PCA and they are arranged into 13 Zones across the United States and Canada? So, no matter where you call home there is a PCA Region near you. Rocky Mountain Region(most of CO, southern WY and southwestern NE) is in Zone 9. The other regions of Zone 9 are Alpine Mountain Region (southern CO), Carrera Region (southern NM and western tip of TX), Intermountain Region(Utah), Llano Estacado Region(TX and OK panhandles), Roadrunner Region (NM and southwestern edge of CO) and the West Texas Region (Lubbock, Midland, Odessa and southern TX). EIGHT CANDIDATES EIGHT BOARD POSITIONS Meet your (unopposed) RMR 2012 Board of Director Nominees! Rick Gonçalves, Nominee for President I was 18 when I first became infatuated with Porsches. Randy Hoch (former RMR President and long-time member) and I used to sit around in the dorms up at CU discussing them. It wasn’t until ‘94, however, that I finally got my first Porsche—an ‘84 911 Carrera. I finally joined the club in 1998 and started Club Racing the next year, after having done every DE possible. Since then, I realize how much the club has helped me learn, and I now understand so much about these wonderful and almost magical cars. I started becoming very active in the club. For six years, I was the program chairman, after which I was elected to the board as Secretary, then Treasurer, Second Vice President, Vice President and most recently as President. As President, I see new challenges to address. Continuing to improve the status and satisfaction level of the Club Race is one. I would also like to implement the committee format for DEs to provide better continuity of events, thereby producing a more pleasurable and rewarding experience. The greatest challenge, however, will be to increase enjoyment for all club members in the wide variety of events that we hold—rallies, autocrosses, tours, concours, car club gatherings, and DEs, while at the same time trying to reduce, or at least stabilize, increasing costs. To do this, I look forward to working with the excellent proposed slate of officers and with the club’s hard-working committee members and volunteers. Jim Widrig, Nominee for 1st Vice President I have been a member of RMR since 2004, when we took our 1st tour to the Black Hills in a newly restored 1969 911E. I have been a member of the RMR Board since 2009, having served as Treasurer for 2009 and 2010, 2nd Vice President for 2011, and 1st Vice president for 2012. In 2012 we expanded our volunteer standing committees with another team of volunteers to run our Driver Education Events throughout the year. As a member of the RMR board, we have all seen and worked through changes necessitated by the construction and development of the track at High Plains Raceway, funded new amenities, and provided direction on continuous improvements in the manner in which events are managed for the club. We will continue to look for ways to increase the types of events, involve more volunteer members in running club events and activities, appeal to a greater number of club members, and have a huge amount of fun! I would like to continue my contribution to serve the club as your 1st Vice President in 2013. In this role, I will be managing communication and assisting other board members and volunteer groups. As many of you have heard me say, this is a club of volunteers, and without your assistance, the events and meetings that we all enjoy so very much would not be possible. I look forward to seeing you at an event soon, and welcome you to volunteer and to help out in or run an event in 2013. John Mackin, Nominee for 2nd Vice President I have been a Porsche owner since 1976 and a PCA member since 1981. I currently own a 1986 Iris Blue 911 Cabriolet which I bought new. Last year, I also acquired a 2003 Lapis Blue Carrera 4. I have been a member of three previous regions (First Settlers, Potomac and Connecticut Valley) before moving to Colorado in 1994. I have been an active DE participant since 1999 and am currently a DE Instructor. My wife Florence and I have been to six Parades and we were Banquet Chairs for the 2009 Colorado Parade. I was also awarded Region Patron award in 2006. I will be assuming the duties of National Parade Banquet Chair in 2014. My professional background is as a career Nuclear Submarine Officer, IT Manager, small business owner and consultant in the nuclear field. I am currently transitioning in retirement. I served as your RMR Treasurer in 2006 and 2007, Membership Chair in 2008 and 2009 and 2nd Vice President in 2012. I look forward to continuing my service to the Rocky Mountain Region. Roger Buswell, Nominee for Treasurer When I was a teenager, I was a subscriber to Hot Rod magazine and dreamed of Mopar Hemi drag racers. Then one summer afternoon in 1968, my dad’s best friend showed up at our Omaha home, driving his brand new 912. I stuffed my lanky frame into the back “seat” and off we went in search of Mexican food. I was in love with everything Porsche by the time we made it to the end of the block. Needless to say I didn’t renew Hot Rod. Since then I’ve been to business school, earned my CFP® license (practicing for over 35 years), am a devoted father and grandfather and I’m married to my soul mate and second wife, Deneen. She isn’t a car person at all yet we have a wonderful marriage. I have been involved with RMR as Advertising Coordinator, three-time event chair for the June Rock ‘N’ Roll DE, three-time flag chief for the annual Porsche Club Race, member of the Control Committee and sundry other RMR tasks that I love doing. I founded the Porsche Breakfast Club about five years ago. I’m also involved with SCCA as a corner worker and withy Rocky Mountain Sidewinders. I’ve been treasurer of a large service club foundation. This will be my second year as RMR Treasurer. My car is a 1982 911SC that is notoriously known as “the car in infinite rehab.” HighGear 5 November 2012
