Several years ago, Walt caught me
online looking at newer Porsches. Many
of us have dreams of owning a beautiful
Porsche, and this dream came true for us on
May 5th this year. We had been seriously
on the hunt for about eleven months. Our
wish list included a water-cooled Porsche
911 with the “Metzger” engine, very
comfortable seats, and lower mileage; fast
is always good but guaranteed, and it had
to be either red or speed yellow. We did
not want this car for track use because
we already have two track cars. Its main
purpose for us is to enjoy on cross-country
adventures and regional tours and the like.
The car we chose was this stunning
2007 997 Turbo in Speed Yellow. At first
glance, it left Walt and me salivating over
its perfection. We found our dream car in
Thousand Oaks, CA, and it just happened
that Walt was in Irvine, CA, at a Club Racing
Scrutineers meeting at the time. I called
him and asked if he had the time to look at
a car a friend had recommended. He said
yes, and that’s when his first adventure
with our new car began.
Walt rose early on the following sunny
Monday morning to pick up the car for the
long trek back to Colorado. It was quite
a bonding experience for him. He knew
its engine’s power, since Alan Benjamin
had let us drive his identical black 480 HP
turbo at PPIR, which meant using the cruise
control on the Interstates. At Cedar City,
Utah, after an overnight stop, he cut across
the mountains to the east to sample the
curves and amazing scenery before getting
back on I-70 for home.
Hunting down a dream...
The cream in the coffee was having
Hans-Peter and Wolfgang Porsche sign its
hood at the Porsche Parade this summer
in UT. What wonderfully accommodating
people. Nothing could get better than that.
We are looking forward to many miles
of quick and comfortable travel in this
amazing automobile.
