SHORTLISTED
Light steel frame building includes roof trusses, made from sections of cold
formed, out of thin gauge, high strength, galvanized steel sheet. The quality,
structural strength, price competitiveness, accuracy and ease of construction of
light steel trusses were sufficient for the developers of this large low cost/affordable
housing project to opt for steel, rather than the conventional timber solution.

How to get 1 000m 2 of floor area for the same price as 300m 2 of conventional
brick and mortar construction? Call in the light steel framing team, cast a high
quality slab and train the learners to do some of the work. Learning the skills to
carry out light steel frame building is not difficult. The result of the effort is a
superb training facility in Hermanus.
SHORTLISTED
An example of a middle class light steel frame double storey house built to the superb
finish we now expect from the building method. This complicated 250m 2 home was
built in less than half the time of a brick and mortar equivalent. The developer and
builder is well known for his brick and mortar buildings – he is a previous winner of
the Western Cape NHBRC award. He is now totally sold on light steel frame building,
just as he expects his clients to be.

50 Steel Construction Vol. 32 No. 5 October 2008
SHORTLISTED
This project is the largest single housing project to date in South Africa. It posed special challenges
to the developer – it is a remote site (think of labour and logistics), subject to inclement
weather conditions which would disrupt conventional building processes, and the 100 houses of
200m2 each had to be built within in a limited construction period to high quality finishes. The
owner decided to use light steel frame building.
To meet the challenges
■ the manufacturer took his roll forming machines to site
■ achieved significant savings on logistical costs due to the low mass of building materials and
components
■ the builder lost very little time due to bad weather
■ as there was very little rubble to clear up afterwards, time and cost savings were achieved.

If you thought that light steel roof trusses are intended for small buildings, you
are wrong! These roof trusses have a clear span of 21.4 metres. The trusses are
spaced at 800mm centres, providing an economical support structure for the ceilings.
The use of light steel roof trusses facilitates interesting architectural finishes
for the ceilings.
