Sustainable solutions that won’t cost the earth
AGGREGATE INDUSTRIES believes in continuous improvement and
development but not at the cost of the overuse of scarce natural
resources or inefficient production processes.
Our businesses...
take a responsible approach to the consumption of resources, the
management and minimisation of our waste and the impacts our operations
have on the communities within which we operate. We are also mindful of
the increasing customer requirement to describe the environmental
performance of our products and services.
With this in mind...
we have developed a dedicated symbol to highlight
those products that have especially strong sustainability
credentials.
The icon and strapline has been created to...
embody the principles of innovation, sustainability and regeneration, and has
been assigned to those sector products and services that conform to
sustainability criteria, ranging from the use of recycled materials to systems for
sustainable drainage.

AGGREGATE INDUSTRIES BUSINESSES
Overview
As an indication of our commitment to minimising
impacts we have through the agreement of a
target of net reduction, begun a process of
reducing our emissions of carbon dioxide,
working towards a target reduction of 12.5% per
tonne of production, by the end of 2010.
The acceptability of our products in use, and the
desire to provide a better living environment for
local communities and their future generations,
are important issues for our business. As a
demonstration of this, Aggregate Industries
sponsors the Civic Trust Sustainability Award,
which recognises and rewards excellence in
sustainable landscape design. In addition, our
Charcon business has given its name to the Civic
Trust Hard Landscaping award, which encourages
submissions from large or small schemes that
exhibit imaginative and varied use of hard
SUSTAINABLE DRAINAGE
Charcon Commercial SuDS
Aggregate Industries have combined a number of its product technologies to offer a wide
range of sustainable drainage systems, which can be tailored to suit the specific
requirements of a particular project.
The innovative high strength sub-base replacement system, Charcon Permavoid, forms the
basis of some of Aggregate Industries’ range of SuDS solutions. Charcon Permavoid
combines with a range of surfacing options, including Charcon Infilta block paving and Bardon
DrainAsphalt. Charcon Permavoid also provides an effective drainage solution when
combined with Charcon Permakerb.
As an alternative, each of the surfacing options supplied by Aggregate Industries can also
be used in conjunction with a granular sub-base.
SUSTAINABILITY CRITERIA
Case Study
Salford Sports Village, Charcon Permavoid and Permachannel
In order to provide ‘a sporting opportunity for all’, the car park and roof drainage system at the new
Salford Sports Village had to be able to withstand the full force of the British weather. In keeping with
Salford City Council’s sustainable development policy, a Charcon Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS)
was chosen to meet the project criteria.
The Charcon solution provided comprised: a Permavoid TM cellular interlocking box structure;
a geotextile fleece to protect against ingress of silts, and Charcon Permachannel TM to provide petrol
interception/oil separation. Very little excavation was required to install the system.
AGGREGATES
Enviroaggs Secondary
Enviroaggs Secondary is a full range of construction aggregates (including concreting
aggregates), fills, hardcores and sands, produced from mineral waste generated from the
extraction of China Clay in Cornwall. Asphalt products can be produced using a proportion
of these aggregates.
SUSTAINABILITY CRITERIA
Bardon Aggregates currently re-processes in excess of 1.5 million tonnes of China Clay waste
annually, which would otherwise be sent to tips. This represents about 7.5% of the overall tipping
carried out by clay producers.
Case Study
A30, Goss Moor, Enviroaggs Secondary
Bardon Aggregates, Bardon Contracting and Needham & Cullen were involved in the largest
construction project of its kind in the South West, to construct a new by-pass on the A30 at Goss Moor
near Indian Queens in Cornwall. Working in association with main contractor, Alfred McAlpine, this
unique project is the first ever major national network highway road built using almost entirely
secondary aggregates. Figures suggest that in excess of 90% of the imported materials were secondary
aggregates derived from the waste generated by the China Clay industry. The China Clay industry
generates waste at a high ratio to finished product, usually around the 9 tonnes of waste to 1 tonne
of finished clay product. Currently some 20 million tonnes of waste is generated per annum.
This particular method was very successful and has reduced wastage considerably.
Garside Glass Sand
Garside Sands is working towards a sustainable future through the development of ‘Glass Sand’
a sustainable alternative and complementary addition to its portfolio of silica sand products.
The glass sand produced for Garside Sands is made from post-consumer bottle waste of all
colours and is processed by implosion rather than crushing. A number of grades can be
produced, from ultra-fine to coarse, each lending itself to a number of applications either
used alone or blended with sand. Depending on performance or aesthetic requirements the
proportion of the sand and glass in the blend can be varied. Waste and Resources Action
Programme (WRAP) has undertaken a number of studies, with encouraging results, into
various applications of glass sand as alternative to silica sand.
It is hoped that glass sand may provide a sustainable filter media for water filtration and
other industrial and decorative applications where silica sand is currently used.
SUSTAINABILITY CRITERIA
Glass Sand has been assigned the sustainability icon as it uses a potential waste material. Made from
recycled bottle glass, the product will provide an alternative to virgin material.
Case Study
West Kent Golf Club, Sustainable Glass Sand blend for bunkers
In response to a need for a more stable bunker sand at West Kent Golf Club, Garside Sands developed
a sustainable solution of a sand blend containing 20% recycled Glass Sand. From a performance point
of view, Glass Sand can be used as a replacement to the traditional natural bunker sand.
The Glass Sand is produced from the surplus of recycled bottle glass in the UK as a result of the volume
of wine imports, and provides similar characteristics to natural silica sand. As well as offering a more
sustainable product, the addition of the Glass Sand to the bunker sand blend maintains a more even
distribution in steep sided bunkers as at West Kent Golf Club. It also results in less ‘plugging’ and offers
greater stability underfoot, giving members a safer, and more sustainable, playing environment.
READY-MIXED CONCRETE
London Claycrete
The greater use of secondary aggregates reduces the demand for primary aggregates.
London Concrete is currently producing Claycrete, which uses secondary aggregate to
replace the coarse aggregate in the product - representing 55% of the total aggregate in the
concrete. The recycled content in elements such as pile caps represents typical values of 70%.
The concrete supplied with an addition of 40% PFA as a cement replacement provides an
overall reduction in CO 2 emissions in the order of 70 kg/m 3 and still meets the required
durability standards.
SUSTAINABILITY CRITERIA
Cornish secondary granite aggregate is supplied by Bardon Aggregates from St. Austell in
Cornwall. The aggregate is derived from the waste stream from the production of
Metakaolin/China Clay process. Once the Metakaolin has been extracted, the remaining hard
material is not processed but discarded as waste. The material is now taken and crushed to meet
the requirements for concrete aggregates.
Ash is a by-product of coal fired power station generation and is used in cementitious
products as a replacement and/or filler.
Ash Solutions Ltd takes a by-product from the electricity generating sector for supply to the
concrete industries thereby reducing the clinker factor (cement) in concrete production as well as
diverting materials from landfill. Using Ash as a cement replacement or filler results in significant
CO 2 savings.
Masterblock Enviroblock
Enviroblocks are sustainable aggregate building blocks certified by the BRE with an A rated
environmental profile. The product range consists of 100mm widths in Dense 7N Solid and
Lightweight Aggregate 3.5N Solid and the range is being expanded to include special paint
finish and high strength variants.
SUSTAINABILITY CRITERIA
Contains 100% recycled aggregate or 100% China Clay secondary aggregate.
Case Study
Housing Corporation and Housing Association, Masterblock Enviroblock
The specification for this project required an external leaf to timber frame houses to be ‘aerated’ or certified
through the ‘BRE Environmental profile scheme’. After some discussion with project consultants the architects,
JJ Jones and Sons, decided that producers of ‘aerated’ blocks were located many miles from Cornwall and
therefore the delivery of blocks would offset any environmental gain in using their product. ‘Enviroblock’ were
the only product that could respond to all aspects of the brief including having a local outlet.
Feedback from those who worked on site was very positive as the blocks are the same size and similar to use
to traditional concrete blocks, so therefore eliminating any confusion with new building methods.
The architects were very pleased with the finished project and would not hesitate to use ‘Enviroblock’ again.
The product allowed the Housing Corporation and Housing Association to achieve a pass with the Ecohomes
Environmental Assessment Scheme.
give a low risk of segregation.
SUSTAINABILITY CRITERIA
Bardon Superbase provides increased durability and best performance against fatigue and
deformation, reducing the requirement for repairs using primary aggregate.
Case Study
A1 Darrington to Dishforth, Yorkshire, Bardon Superbase and Hitex
The A1 through Yorkshire forms part of a strategic link in the national network between Scotland, the
north-east and the south of England. The challenge was to provide a binder course asphalt material that
could support very high volumes of traffic without undue deformation. The laid material had to be
constructed so that it was impermeable and provided protection to the lower bound materials. Modern
thin surfacings are now the surface material of choice because of their user benefits, such as low noise
and low spray. These materials can be regarded as semi-permeable and therefore the impermeability of
the binder course layer is today of greater importance. Bardon Superbase14 was laid as the binder course
layer, 50mm thick on top of a 28mm DBM50 base, with Bardon Hitex as the surface material. The overall
pavement was designed as a flexible composite and used cement bound material in the lower base layers.
Bardon ASHphalt is a patent awarded asphalt material that guarantees a minimum content
level of at least 15% of municipal incinerator ash but typically, used in combination with other
secondary or recycled aggregates, uses levels of up to 20% or more. The product can be
formulated to meet most British Standard requirements or design asphalt base and binder
course mixtures.
SUSTAINABILITY CRITERIA
Uses locally available secondary aggregates to reduce reliance on primary aggregate sources and
reduces impact on land fill.
Case Study
A316 at Twickenham in West London, Bardon ASHphalt
The A316 at Twickenham in West London was chosen as a site for trialling Transport for London’s (TfL’s)
when compared to conventional asphalts and macadams, resisting deformation and crack
propagation, making it ideal for heavy vehicle movement situations. The enhanced
formulation improves fuel oil resistance and provides enhanced workability at higher
temperatures as well as a stiffer product after cooling.
SUSTAINABILITY CRITERIA
Reduced mixing temperature by up to 30ºC resulting in less consumption of fossil fuels in the
production process and subsequently lower CO 2 emissions, reduced exposure to bitumen fumes for
operatives, and increased product life in comparison with conventional surfaces. This reduces the long
term requirements for primary aggregate use, transportation of product and disposal of waste asphalt.
ASPHALT
Bardon Leisuretex Plus
Bardon Leisuretex Plus is a free-draining, durable play surfacing, designed to satisfy the
exacting performance requirements of multi-use games areas (MUGAS). Leisuretex complies
with the Lawn Tennis Association specification for tennis court use. This surface course is
designed to withstand the forces and wear rates experienced from activities such as hard
court hockey. The durable surface allows play to resume within 20 minutes of heavy rainfall.
Bardon Leisuretex Plus provides additional application and performance benefits - improved
workability at mix temperatures and improved durability after cooling.
SUSTAINABILITY CRITERIA
Reduced mixing temperature by up to 30ºC resulting in less consumption of fossil fuels in the
production process and subsequently lower CO 2 emissions, reduced exposure to bitumen fumes for
operatives, increased lifespan of product in comparison with conventional surfaces resulting in less
long term requirement for primary aggregate production, transportation of product and disposal of
waste asphalt.
Case Study
Wimbledon High School, Mansell Road, Wimbledon, Bardon Leisuretex Plus
The objective was to create an updated playing area for a prestigious private school, with a proud
sporting history. The client decided to use Leisuretex Plus because the site involved a play area that was
to be used unpainted and would be likely to get considerable use. The client thought the risk posed
by the material softening in the summer and any subsequent damage issues could be reduced by using
an alternative material.
Bardon Leisuretex Plus is produced using an additive which in addition to enhancing the performance of
the material, allows a lower mixing temperature resulting in lower fuel usage and reduced CO 2 emissions.
Sustainable solutions that won’t cost the earth
Bardon Prodrive has been specifically designed for surfacing estate roads and driveways
where tight turning circles might otherwise cause rutting and scuffing.
SUSTAINABILITY CRITERIA
Bardon Prodrive Plus
Reduced mixing temperature by up to 30ºC resulting in less consumption of fossil fuels in the
production process and subsequently lower CO 2 emissions, reduced exposure to bitumen fumes for
operatives, increased lifespan of product in comparison with conventional surfaces resulting in less
long term requirement for primary aggregate production, transportation of product and disposal of
waste asphalt.
Case Study
Private residence, near Maidstone. Kent, Bardon Prodrive
The challenge was to create a driveway for a large private dwelling in a rural setting, that would both
be tough enough to resist the effects of power steering and would not detract from the idyllic country
setting. The customer, O’Rourke Construction, chose Prodrive Plus because the nature of the site
demanded a tough and resilient surface course that would withstand power steering in tight turning
circles. Prodrive Plus was laid in a 25mm thickness, on top of 0/20 DBM binder course, laid approximately
70mm thick. This in turn was laid, in some areas, on top of a compacted hardcore of brick and concrete,
with Type 1 put down to maintain levels and make it suitable for laying the binder course.
