12 2 0 1 0 a n n u a l r e p o r t board designated funds the Community Foundation’s Board of Directors has established a variety of Board Designated Funds to address significant needs in our community. these Funds are sustained by the community and the generous donors who provide the much needed financial support that allow these initiatives of the Community Foundation to continue. angel Fund In 2010, The Angel Fund was the recipient of a $25,000 grant from the Jacob G. Schmidlapp Trusts, Fifth Third Bank, Trustee. This generous gift allowed the Angel Fund to expand its efforts to provide emergency assistance to neighbors in need. One of those emergency cases involved helping the family of a local fire fighter who passed away suddenly in a car accident. With no extended family, his 18 year old son and 14 year old daughter were left to plan and cover the expenses of their father’s funeral. The Angel Fund stepped in and assisted the children in covering the funeral costs thereby giving their father, a local hero, a proper burial. Kids2Kamp Fund Established with the idea that every student should get the opportunity to experience the joys of camp, Kids2Kamp was created to provide disadvantaged children within the Lakota Schools an opportunity to attend summer camp. Children in grades 1-3 are provided with the experience to attend a week-long day camp at the local YMCA, while children in grades 4-6 are offered the opportunity to attend a weeklong overnight camp experience. In November, The Heroes’ Fund hosted its Annual Fundraising Gala featuring music by the Tom Daugherty Orchestra. Heroes’ Fund Similar to the Angel Fund, the Heroes’ Fund has been established to provide one time financial support for any military family, current or honorably discharged, whose primary breadwinner has served in a combat zone or, if the serviceman/woman is unmarried, to the parents or family members with whom he/she resides. This fund is available to qualified persons residing in Butler, Warren and Hamilton County, or to non-profits serving this group of qualified residents. One of the veterans assisted by the Fund in 2010, was Joe, a Vietnam army veteran who had recently undergone back surgery. Not able to work, Joe and his family were falling behind in their bills very quickly. The Heroes’ Fund stepped in and prevented a foreclosure on Joe’s home until he was able to get back to work and support his family. “I seriously don’t know what we would had done if we hadn’t found the Heroes’ Fund. It’s amazing there are such caring individuals out there to help the deserving military guys that have put their lives in jeopardy just to save all of ours.”
YIP Members participate in a teambuilding activity during their summer planning retreat. Youth in philanthropy (YIp) Fund Designed to introduce local high school students to philanthropy and community development, YIP provides hands-on experience that benefits both the participating student and local charities. Students raise money, build endowment funds and make grants to local nonprofit organizations. In addition, YIP seeks to create fun, safe activities for youthful participation, while raising funds to support their work. In 2010, YIP awarded $1,300 to support Reach Out Lakota’s Back to School Program. The program provided more than 400 Lakota students with necessary school supplies at the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year. power of the purse Fund The Power of the Purse (POP) Fund seeks to educate, inspire and increase the number of women committed to philanthropy. Quarterly, POP members host social events where they work to solicit and review requests from area non-profits and recruit new members to join their effort. Together, the membership votes on which organization to receive their annual grant award. In 2010, POP members pooled their financial resources, each making a $100 contribution, to award $10,000 to Healthy Visions. Healthy Visions provides programming to help prepare people to make better choices to build stronger relationships during adolescence, marriage and parenting. To date, the POP Fund has awarded more than $40,000 to area charities. 13
