ThURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2
Closing General Sessions
Austin Convention Center
Ballroom C
8:30 - 9:15 am
Vision of Courts and Technology
Keynote Speaker: Chief Justice Wallace
Jefferson, Texas Supreme Court
Raised in San Antonio, the son of an Air
Force major, 42 year-old Jefferson is a graduate
of Michigan State University and the University
of Texas Law School. After working
at prominent law firms for 13 years, he was
tapped by Rick Perry for a seat on the court
in 2001, and he was elevated the top spot
in September of 2004. But resumes don’t tell
the whole story of the first African American
to serve on and lead the Texas Supreme
Court, who, as it happens, is descended from
slaves. His great-great-great grandfather, Shedrick
Willis, was freed after the McLennan
County judge who was his master ruled that
a free black man could not be bound by contract
to sell himself into slavery and went on
to serve two terms on the Waco City Council
after the Civil War. An amazing history that
sheds only a little light on the life of his descendant,
who happened to grow up to be
pretty amazing himself.
Chief Justice Wallace will share his vision
of where Texas Courts are and where they
are going.
9:15 - 10:15 am
Remote Magistrate and Remote
Attorney Visits
Speakers: Mr. Woody Gossom,
County Judge, Wichita Falls County and
Mr. Renan Ramirez , CIO Hidalgo County
It’s the next best thing to being there.
Remote magistrate warnings and attorney
visits enhance court security, public safety
and speedy access to bail and justice for the
accused. Wichita and Hidalgo counties are
currently using and will demonstrate these
exceptional tools.
10:30 - 11:30 am
Technology Related Legal Issues
Speaker: Mr. Peter Vogel, Partner and
Technology Attorney, Gardere, Wynne
Sewell, LLP
from the start and has proven to be a
Security and Privacy issues.
