Lower Colorado River Authority
Shared Radio System
Booth 723 / 725
In demanding situations, reliable communications
is often critical. As a result, the Lower
Colorado River Authority (LCRA) built a 900
MHz trunked radio system in 1995, with permission
from the Legislature. This system has been
growing since its inception, providing enough
capacity to allow LCRA employees and external
public organizations throughout the service territory
to communicate.
With more than 45 radio sites strategically
scattered within LCRA’s service, radio coverage
reaches from the northwest counties of
McCulloch, San Saba and Lampasas all the way
southeast to Dewitt and Matagorda. More than
4500 radio users rely on the LCRA system for
daily communications.
The radio users have different needs, depending
on the agency. LCRA uses the system
for data exchange for its Hydromet system of
gauges that provide real-time data on rainfall
and stream flow. Automatic Vehicle Location
(AVL), park ranger communication and general
business communications are also conducted by
LCRA employees over the radio system. Transit
authorities use radios to dispatch vehicles to
pick up bus riders, including those with special
needs, while public safety and fire departments
use the radios for routine calls and emergency
situations. Electric cooperatives use radios
to communicate locations of outages and crew
dispatching.
All of LCRA’s radio users have the ability to
use common groups to collaborate with one
another in certain circumstances, even if the
entities do not typically work together. Collaboration
has occurred during catastrophic events,
such as flooding, to weekly events, such as
placing police officers at schools to monitor
football games.
Railroad Commission of Texas
Oil and Gas Information Technology Solutions
Booth 629
The Railroad Commission has made significant
strides in automating agency operations to
provide better service. As stakeholders continue
to demand increased availability of information
over the Internet, the Commission has continued
to respond with new capabilities that redefine
and reshape the way oil and gas well and
pipeline information is portrayed and provided.
Stakeholders have requested more immediate
access via the web to the Commission’s volumes
of information stored on paper, microfilm or in
the Commission’s mainframe databases. In addition,
both internal and external stakeholders
strive for more efficient filing and processing of
regulatory data via the web. Recently implemented
information technology initiatives include
on-line filing capability for oil and gas regulatory
data, efficient processing of that data through
electronic workflow, expanded web-based query
systems for interested stakeholders, and a
Public GIS Map Viewer that provides interactive
search capabilities and map views for oil and
gas wells and pipeline data. Commission staff
will demonstrate several modules now available
through the RRC Online System including the
Production Data Query (PDQ), Drilling Permit
Application System, and Production Reporting
System. Demonstrations will also be provided
on the many ways oil and gas well information
and pipeline data can be located using the
Public GIS Map Viewer.”
