people who are passionate about paddling and the outdoors.”
Mills recently wrapped up a long stretch of travel and competing with the World
suit pocket.
As a National Freestyle Kayaking Team member, Mills primarily competes in
whitewater kayak competitions but she also tries her hand at stand up paddling
events. 2010 was a breakout year for her as she notched results at FIBark, the
Beyond Coastal Guide: How to
choose the best sunscreen
Salt Lake City, Utah, (August 4, 2011) - Whether it’s overcast where you live or
blazing bright, you should wear sunscreen every day. But which one? We
consulted the American Academy of Dermatology and the Environmental
Working Group to find the best protection.
Here’s what to look for:
Strength
Fact: There are two types of harmful rays from the sun: UVB and UVA.
Sunscreens’ strength is measured in Sun Protection Factor (SPF). The SPF only
refers to a sunscreen’s ability to deflect the sun’s burning rays (UVB). An SPF
rating, which can range from 2-100, is calculated by comparing how much
longer it takes someone wearing the cream to burn versus how long it takes
unprotected skin to burn. It’s important to note that UVB protection does not
actually increase proportionately with a designated SPF number. For instance,
an SPF of 60 is not twice as strong as SPF 30; it only offers 1 percent more
protection.
Bottom Line: Dermatologists recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF of 30
and reapplying every two hours for the greatest protection against sunburn.
UV What?
Fact: Sunlight consists of two types of harmful rays: Ultraviolet A (UVA) and
Ultraviolet B (UVB). UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin. Actually, they can
penetrate most things, including glass, and they’re always present—even on
cloudy days. UVA rays can suppress the immune system, and are responsible
for causing wrinkles and age spots. UVB rays cause sunburns. Excessive
exposure to either or both can cause skin cancer.
Not all sunscreens offer protection against both types of UV rays. Those that do
are called broad-spectrum sunscreens.
Bottom Line: Only broad-spectrum sunscreens can protect against both UVA
and UVB rays.
The active ingredients to look for in these sunscreens are:
Avobenzone, Zinc, and Titanium
(disclaimer: titanium doesn’t protect against the complete range of UVA rays.)
To be sure, there are other active ingredients proven to block both types of rays,
but their health risks preclude their regular inclusion. For instance, Beyond
Coastal stopped using oxybenzone because it was linked to hormone
disruptions.
Mineral versus Chemical (Sunblock versus Sunscreen)
Fact: Sunscreens fall into two categories: mineral and chemical/non-mineral.
Mineral: Sometimes called “natural,” mineral sunscreens physically block the
sun from reaching the skin by using the active ingredients zinc oxide and
titanium dioxide. Mineral sunscreens tend to be thick and opaque, and can be
difficult to spread. They rarely go above SPF 30 because as you increase the
amount of active ingredient like zinc or titanium, you also increase the formula’s
density. Many parents prefer mineral sunscreens for their kids.
And, if a sunscreen is too goopy or unappealing, people won’t use it.
Consequently, it can’t protect you.
Non-mineral: These sunscreens are absorbed into the skin where they act as
filters and reduce ultraviolet radiation penetration to the skin. They rub in
smoothly and evenly and can be more water- and sweat-resistant.
Bottom Line: Whether you choose mineral or chemical, the critical factor with
sunscreen is to use it. Experts recommend applying about a shot glass worth of
sunscreen every two hours when outside. Chemical sunscreen should be
applied a half-hour before exposure to the sun.
What’s Inside Fact:
Sunscreens are made up of about 20 percent active ingredients and 80 percent
inactive ingredients. Sunscreens essentially share the same active ingredients,
and the cocktail of inactive ingredients distinguishes products from each other.
These inactive ingredients can be moisturizers, scents, and more.
Most health hazard issues are derived from inactive ingredients, so you should
check with the Environmental Working Group to learn what’s in your sunscreen.
Avoid sunscreens with paraben, petroleum, and added fragrance.
Bottom line: Rather than buy a sunscreen with a high SPF (and a higher
concentration of chemicals), follow dermatologist recommendations and use an
SPF 30 sunscreen with frequent reapplications.
So what should you look for in a sunscreen? First decide if you want mineral
or non-mineral, then use this article as a guide. Beyond Coastal offers a range of
options with different SPFs, scents, and intended uses. The key is to find a
sunscreen you will apply daily, with frequency.
Just as you don’t leave the house without a coat in the winter, you ought not
leave without sunscreen in the summer. We all love the sun. We long for long
days outside. And with the right sunscreen, we can do that while protecting our
skin and our health. It’s really that easy.
Beyond Coastal Guide: Stay
safe in the sun
Salt Lake City, Utah, (August 4, 2011) - To hear some tell it, the only way to
stay safe in the sun is to avoid it. We couldn’t disagree more. For millennia
humans have sought energy, warmth, and life from the sun. Whether you’re a
gardener, an athlete, a bike commuter, or someone who just likes to meander
outside, you know as well as we do the joys the sun can bring.
You also know the sun’s strength. If you don’t respect the sun, it will burn your
skin, strip the moisture from your body. With that in mind, we offer these tips for
staying safe in the sun:
1. Sunscreen, sunscreen, and more sunscreen
Here’s a quick recap of what we recommend:
• Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a 30 SPF; this will protect against
both types of harmful UV rays: UVA and UVB
• Choose a Paraben-free sunscreen; once a common sunscreen ingredient,
para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) stains clothes and can cause allergies
• If you use a mineral, or any sunscreen, make sure the active ingredients
include avobenzone, zinc, or titanium
• Choose a water-resistant sunscreen if you will be swimming or sweating
2. Apply sunscreen frequently, in copious amounts
Apply non-mineral sunscreen a half hour before exposure to the sun, and always
put on more than you think you need. Experts recommend using the equivalent
of a shot-glass worth of sunscreen with each full body application.
3. Apply sunscreen to any exposed skin
Yes, we’re even talking about the tops of your feet. And your triceps, the backs
of your knees—essentially any place on your body you tend to forget about until
it crinkles with sunburn. We’ve been known to remove our watches or any other
jewelry that can slide around to apply a thorough coating of sunscreen.
4. Reapply
We know, we know—this can be as fun as telling your toddler it’s time to get out
of the pool and go home for a nap. Trust us: it’s a lot easier than it sounds.
Think back to the last time you suffered a burn. Chances are you applied
sunscreen at the beginning of the day and considered it a done deal, right?
We’ve been there. And we suffered for it. Sunscreen works really well, but only
when you use it correctly. Remember this golden rule: Apply sunscreen
throughout the day, roughly every two to three hours (more if you’ve been in the
water or working up a good sweat). To make this easier, Beyond Coastal offers
tubes and tins of sunscreen that are small enough to fit in a purse, pocket, or
pack. Stash them everywhere and reapplying will become as automatic as
buckling your seat belt.
5. Wear a hat
This comes down to personal comfort, but shade in the sun is like lemonade by
the pool.
6. Drink up
Drinking water throughout the day keeps your skin and lips hydrated and
refreshed as well as helping you feel better when you come in from the sun
7. Wear the right clothes
Some of us see summer as the time to shimmy down to skimpy tanks and
shorts; we should religiously abide by tips 1-4. For the rest, consider sporting
loose-fitting, light colored clothing.
Follow these tips and you’ll have a joyful summer in the sun. Or the clouds—
UVA rays can penetrate even on cloudy days, so don sunscreen regardless of
the conditions outside. We live for our time outdoors and we know you do too.
Just because the sun is strong doesn’t mean it should overpower your
schedule. Lather up, stay hydrated, seek shade, and have fun. We’ll see you on
the trails.
Beyond Coastal Guide: How
sunscreen works
Salt Lake City, Utah, (August 4, 2011) - Here are the things you know about
sunscreen: you should wear it daily, preferably 30 SPF, you should apply it at
least 30 minutes before going outside, you should reapply it frequently, and use
a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects you from both UVA and UVB rays.
But how exactly does this elixir that allows you to spend the day outside actually
work? Good question.
Sunscreen is essentially a filter. Comprised of active and inactive ingredients,
sunscreen either absorbs harmful ultraviolet rays (non-mineral sunscreens) or
blocks them (mineral sunscreens).
The active ingredients are generally similar, regardless of which sunscreen you
use. Currently the FDA has approved 17 active sunscreen compounds that are
proven to block UVB rays—the ultraviolet that results in sunburn. Only four of
those 17 compounds offer UVA protection (UVA rays penetrate and damage the
skin). Those include:
• Avobenzone
• Encamsule
• Zinc Oxide
• Titanium Dioxide
The active ingredients in non-mineral sunscreen are chemicals that absorb into
the skin and protect it by absorbing the UV rays from the sun. Mineral
sunscreens use zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to physically block the rays (they
“sit” on top of your skin and create an actual barrier). Beyond Coastal has
worked diligently to refine our natural formula so it applies more like a nonmineral
sunscreen and leaves little-to-no visible white layer on the skin.
To find a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays start by looking for
products labeled “broad-spectrum” but also read the ingredient list and make
sure that the active ingredients contain Zn, TI, or Avobenzone.
The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) system indicates the length of time someone
can be in the sun and delay burning. For example, if you burn in one minute
without sunscreen, you would burn in 15 minutes with an SPF 15 sunscreen and
30 minutes with a SPF 30 sunscreen. This isn’t a hard and fast rule. Factors that
can affect an SPF include your skin type, humidity, amount of sunscreen
applied, and sun exposure over days.
Sunscreen works best when applied frequently, evenly, and in reasonable
amounts. It may feel like magic (how can this cream actually protect me from the
big burning ball in the sky?) but it’s really quite simple: sunscreen works by
filtering out harmful rays and protecting you against sunburn, skin cancer, and
wrinkles. Whether you choose mineral or non-mineral, sunscreen will work only
if you use it.
So as you choose your product, buy something that’s convenient to access,
isn’t filled with more inactive ingredients than you can count, and that has Zn, Ti,
or Avobenzone as active ingredients! Make sure the texture and fragrance (or
lack there-of) agree with you. Then lather it on and keep at it. Every time you
apply sunscreen you have the opportunity to do something healthy for your skin
– so get out and play!
