proud tradition of quality women’s<br />
tennis has only been enhanced in the<br />
three seasons that Jarrod Smith has<br />
been in charge of the <strong>Drury</strong> Panthers’ program.<br />
Fresh off a solid career as a player at Northwest<br />
Missouri State, Smith transitioned into one<br />
of the youngest NCAA head coaches in the<br />
country when he led the Panthers to a 23-5<br />
record and the school’s first NCAA-II Elite<br />
Eight appearance in 2006. To prove it was no<br />
temporary thing, Smith had <strong>Drury</strong> back in the<br />
national limelight a year later, posting a 19-6<br />
mark and a trip to the NCAA-II Sweet 16.<br />
Last season, Smith’s Panthers posted their<br />
best record to date, finishing 23-4 and<br />
advancing again to the Sweet 16, where <strong>Drury</strong><br />
ran into then-top ranked BYU-Hawaii and fell 5-0 in Houston, Texas. Add<br />
it all up, and Smith’s 65-15 overall mark and .813 winning percentage ranks<br />
among the best in NCAA-II nationally, helping the Panthers maintain their<br />
current string of seven consecutive NCAA tournament appearances…though<br />
before Smith’s arrival, the previous four had ended in the round of 32 or 64.<br />
Smith’s Panthers have been ranked in the Top 20 nationally in each of<br />
his three previous seasons, reaching a high of 10th nationally during the<br />
2006-07 campaign. His individuals have excelled as well, including an<br />
appearance by then-junior Mouna Sabri in the ITA Small College National<br />
Championships final eight in the fall of 2006. His squads have had<br />
representation in either the singles or doubles final in the ITA Great Lakes<br />
Region championships in each of his three seasons at <strong>Drury</strong>. And that’s<br />
without mentioning the success his Panthers have had in the Great Lakes<br />
Valley Conference. Since joining the GLVC in 2005-06, the Panthers have<br />
finished second, first and first in their three seasons of league competition.<br />
Smith was named Co-GLVC Coach of the Year in 2007 and won the<br />
league’s award outright last spring, when his Panthers rolled to the league title.<br />

New to <strong>Drury</strong> Panthers tennis this<br />
season, Volunteer Assistant Coach<br />
John Bunselmeyer has been a name<br />
in Springfield area tennis for many years.<br />
Playing in tournaments and working with<br />
youth programs, he has kept his interest in<br />
tennis sharp and saw this as an opportunity to<br />
share his knowledge of the game with a new<br />
generation while having a little fun working<br />
alongside the Panthers and coach Jarrod Smith.<br />
Before joining the staff at <strong>Drury</strong>, Bunselmeyer<br />
coached both the boys and the girls Central<br />
High School tennis teams. He is a graduate<br />
of Missouri State <strong>University</strong> with a degree in<br />
Accounting and currently is the Vice-President<br />
of family owned business, Johnstone Supply.<br />
He is married to Barbara and they have two children, Amy and Ryan. Both<br />
children are tennis players and all are avid tennis fans.<br />

Smith also has coached the league’s Player of the Year recipient in each of<br />
DU’s three seasons as a member - Alejandra Miranda-Sanchez in 2006, Sabri<br />
in 2007 and Laure Piquemal in 2008.<br />
A Lee’s Summit native, Smith was a standout player at NWMSU as well,<br />
lettering all four seasons and earning six Mid-America Intercollegiate<br />
<strong>Athletics</strong> Associations championships (three in singles, three in doubles.<br />
He was a first-team all-MIAA selection each season from 2000-03.<br />

Jarrod Smith has constructed quite the successful NCAA Division II<br />
program in his three seasons with the Panthers, and his fourth would<br />
appear to be headed down that same path in 2008-09.<br />
The Panthers lost the last two GLVC Player of the Year when<br />
Mouna Sabri graduated and Laure Piquemal chose not to return<br />
after sensational seasons last spring, but Smith has reloaded<br />
around the addition of Incarnate Word senior transfers Chandra<br />
Capozzi and Alba Passanissi and talented freshman Katia Bon<br />
this season.<br />
Added to the mix with another newcomer, junior transfer Anna<br />
Lustig, and returning veterans in senior Lindsey Castrodale and<br />
Khrystsina Tryboi, and the Panthers appear to have the makings of<br />
a squad capable of producing a three-peat of championships in the<br />
Great Lakes Valley Conference, not to mention a seventh straight<br />
berth in the NCAA-II Tournament.<br />
