Jarrod Smith
Head Coach
A
proud tradition of quality women’s
tennis has only been enhanced in the
three seasons that Jarrod Smith has
been in charge of the Drury Panthers’ program.
Fresh off a solid career as a player at Northwest
Missouri State, Smith transitioned into one
of the youngest NCAA head coaches in the
country when he led the Panthers to a 23-5
record and the school’s first NCAA-II Elite
Eight appearance in 2006. To prove it was no
temporary thing, Smith had Drury back in the
national limelight a year later, posting a 19-6
mark and a trip to the NCAA-II Sweet 16.
Last season, Smith’s Panthers posted their
best record to date, finishing 23-4 and
advancing again to the Sweet 16, where Drury
ran into then-top ranked BYU-Hawaii and fell 5-0 in Houston, Texas. Add
it all up, and Smith’s 65-15 overall mark and .813 winning percentage ranks
among the best in NCAA-II nationally, helping the Panthers maintain their
current string of seven consecutive NCAA tournament appearances…though
before Smith’s arrival, the previous four had ended in the round of 32 or 64.
Smith’s Panthers have been ranked in the Top 20 nationally in each of
his three previous seasons, reaching a high of 10th nationally during the
2006-07 campaign. His individuals have excelled as well, including an
appearance by then-junior Mouna Sabri in the ITA Small College National
Championships final eight in the fall of 2006. His squads have had
representation in either the singles or doubles final in the ITA Great Lakes
Region championships in each of his three seasons at Drury. And that’s
without mentioning the success his Panthers have had in the Great Lakes
Valley Conference. Since joining the GLVC in 2005-06, the Panthers have
finished second, first and first in their three seasons of league competition.
Smith was named Co-GLVC Coach of the Year in 2007 and won the
league’s award outright last spring, when his Panthers rolled to the league title.
John Bunselmeyer
Volunteer
Assistant Coach
New to Drury Panthers tennis this
season, Volunteer Assistant Coach
John Bunselmeyer has been a name
in Springfield area tennis for many years.
Playing in tournaments and working with
youth programs, he has kept his interest in
tennis sharp and saw this as an opportunity to
share his knowledge of the game with a new
generation while having a little fun working
alongside the Panthers and coach Jarrod Smith.
Before joining the staff at Drury, Bunselmeyer
coached both the boys and the girls Central
High School tennis teams. He is a graduate
of Missouri State University with a degree in
Accounting and currently is the Vice-President
of family owned business, Johnstone Supply.
He is married to Barbara and they have two children, Amy and Ryan. Both
children are tennis players and all are avid tennis fans.
Smith also has coached the league’s Player of the Year recipient in each of
DU’s three seasons as a member - Alejandra Miranda-Sanchez in 2006, Sabri
in 2007 and Laure Piquemal in 2008.
A Lee’s Summit native, Smith was a standout player at NWMSU as well,
lettering all four seasons and earning six Mid-America Intercollegiate
Athletics Associations championships (three in singles, three in doubles.
He was a first-team all-MIAA selection each season from 2000-03.
program in his three seasons with the Panthers, and his fourth would
appear to be headed down that same path in 2008-09.
The Panthers lost the last two GLVC Player of the Year when
Mouna Sabri graduated and Laure Piquemal chose not to return
after sensational seasons last spring, but Smith has reloaded
around the addition of Incarnate Word senior transfers Chandra
Capozzi and Alba Passanissi and talented freshman Katia Bon
this season.
Added to the mix with another newcomer, junior transfer Anna
Lustig, and returning veterans in senior Lindsey Castrodale and
Khrystsina Tryboi, and the Panthers appear to have the makings of
a squad capable of producing a three-peat of championships in the
Great Lakes Valley Conference, not to mention a seventh straight
berth in the NCAA-II Tournament.
