Drury’s NCAA-II baseball program is now in its fifth year of existence,
having fashioned one of the great start-up stories in college sports
of league coaches . But as much as the success they’ve enjoyed on the
diamond, Drury Baseball prides itself on excelling in the classroom

Fifth year, 112-93
Few start-up athletic
programs in
the country can
boast of opening
with four straight
winning seasons
like the Drury
baseball Panthers
of head coach
Mark Stratton .
But that’s the case
with DU Baseball, which hit the ground running
with a 33-24 overall record, Great Lakes
Valley Conference championship and NCAA-
II berth in its inaugural campaign of existence
(2007) and hasn’t stopped winning since .
Stratton’s Panthers finished 26-23 last season,
including an 18-8 mark in GLVC play that
qualified Drury for the league’s post-season
tournament for the second time in the program’s
four-year history .
That 2010 effort pushed Stratton’s overall
record to 112-93 in four seasons (a .546
winning percentage) since the Drury baseball
program was revived after three decades of
Byron Hagler is in
his fifth season as the
Panthers’ pitching
coach in 2010-11,
continuing to guide
one of the most
respected staffs in the
Great Lakes Valley
Conference . Before arriving at Drury, Hagler
spent 28 seasons as a high school coach in the
Ozarks, including his final 12 at Springfield’s
Hillcrest High School, where his final Hornets’
team finished 21-5 and fourth in the state in
Class 4 . He also spent 15 years at Licking High
School and one at Climax Springs .
Hagler had an overall record of 571-188 as
a prep coach, including 223-94 at Hillcrest,
where he produced seven Ozark Conference
championships and four district titles . He
finished 348-94 at Licking, where his Wildcats
captured 13 district titles and two state
championships .

infancy, continue to establish themselves as
one of the premier teams in the league and the
Midwest region .
In 2007, his first season as the Panthers head
baseball coach and Drury’s first intercollegiate
season since 1974, Stratton led the Panthers to
a 33-24 overall record and a Great Lakes Valley
Conference post-season tournament championship,
writing a story that perhaps is unprecedented
for first-year NCAA programs .
The Panthers advanced to the NCAA-II
Tournament’s North Central Regional, where
sixth-seeded Drury posted a 2-2 mark before
being eliminated as one of the final 24 teams
still playing in the country despite featuring a
squad with just two seniors .
Stratton is a 1977 graduate of Southwest
Missouri State University who received his
masters from the University of Missouri-Columbia
in 1981 . He began his coaching career
as an assistant to Don Provance at Glendale in
1982, and held that position until he replaced
the retiring Provance in 1993 .
In 13 seasons as the Glendale High School
Falcons’ head coach, Stratton’s teams amassed
a record of 244-154 and won four district

Nasby is entering
his fifth season with
the Panthers and
his third in guiding
the Drury junior varsity
squad as its head
coach when DU hits
the practice fields in the fall of 2010 .
In addition, Nasby is the program’s recruiting
coordinator and serves as first-base coach and
handles defensive alignments for the Panthers .
A 2005 graduate of Missouri State University,
where he obtained his degree in Marketing, Nasby
played four seasons of baseball for the Bears .
He started at every infield position (excluding
pitcher), and drew the starting assignment at first
base for the Bears during their remarkable run
into the 2003 College World Series in Omaha,
Neb . Nasby is a graduate of Springfield’s Glendale
High School, where he played three seasons
for DU coach Mark Stratton . Nasby also has
picked up experience by coaching in Italy’s professional
leagues .

Stratton also coached the Glendale Merchants
American Legion baseball squad from 1988-
2002, compiling a 421-243 mark and winning
a state championship in 1997 .
Stratton and wife Gay have been married for
36 years and have four adult children – sons
Brian, Kevin and Chip and daughter Sara .
