DR. EDSEL MATTHEWS
VP FOR ATHLETIC AFFAIRS
Drury Panther Baseball 2008
Dr. Edsel Matthews
moved to a newly
created position of
Vice President For
Athletic Affairs in
June of 2007 after
serving as Drury’s
Director of Athletics
since 2003.
In his new position,
Matthews serves
as the primary fundraiser for the athletic department and
oversees all aspects of Drury athletics while working
closely with new AD Pat Atwell. While at Drury, Matthews
has helped Drury make the switch to the Great Lakes Valley
Conference and add new sports like the highly successful,
first-year DU baseball program of last season and this
year’s new entry, softball. Under his direction, the Panthers’
finished a best-ever ninth place in the Director’s Cup
all-sports competition for NCAA Division II in 2006-07.
Matthews, a Southwest Missouri State graduate, was a
former basketball assistant and head coach of the Panthers
before joining the Springfield R-12 Schools as their Director
of Athletics/Activities Director for the next 25 years starting
in 1978, where his tenure brought significant change and
advancement for the city’s athletic programs. Matthews was
recognized as the Missouri Athletic Director of the Year in
1984 and was selected in 1990 for the National Award of
Merit, naming him one of the elite athletic administrators in
America. Matthews is a member of the Drury Athletics Hall
of Fame, the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame and the
Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. He and his wife of 42 years,
Becky, have three married children (Beth, Cheryl and Mark)
and five grandchildren.
BARBARA COWHERD
Assistant AD/Senior Women’s Administrator
The Panther head volleyball coach for 20
years, Cowherd accepted the position of
assistant director of athletics five years
ago and is now largely responsible for
event scheduling and assisting in promotions/marketing.
The program’s Senior Women’s Administrator
and assistant professor in the exercise and sport science
department, Cowherd has been an invaluable part of the Drury
athletic administration staff the past six yeaers. A 1979 graduate
of Missouri Southern State College, she earned her master’s
degree from Pittsburg (Kan.) State. Barb and husband Gene
reside in Purdy.
PAT ATWELL
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Pat Atwell was named
Drury’s director of
athletics on June 7,
2007, in a joint move
when former AD Dr.
Edsel Matthews was
promoted to a newly
created position, Vice
President for Athletic
Development. Atwell
had spent the past 16
years at a fellow Great Lakes Valley Conference member
school, Quincy (Ill.) University, where he had served as
athletic director since 2001 and helped the Hawks not only
become highly competitive in the GLVC, but construct
several new facilities in his tenure. Atwell was also a highly
successful head baseball coach with the Hawks from 1991 til
he assumed the AD’s role. Atwell coached the Hawks to a
record of 284-196-3 over the next 10 years, making him the
all-time winningest coach in the history of the program. He led
Quincy to Division II Tournament appearances in 1997 and
1999 and to back-to-back 40-win seasons in 1999 and 2000.
Atwell was named GLVC Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1999
and produced six All-Americans, including first-teamer Josh
Rabe, who was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 11th
round of the 2000 Major League Baseball amateur draft, and
pitcher Josh Kinney, who reached the major leagues in 2006
with the St. Louis Cardinals, serving as a key contributor on
the World Series championship team. A native of Andover,
N.Y., Atwell graduated from Salem-Teikyo (W.V.) University
with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in physical education in
1983. He also earned his Master’s of Arts degree in education
from Salem-Teikyo in 1990. Atwell and his wife, Lisa, are the
parents of two children. Melissa is a freshman at Catholic High
School and Eric a sixth-grader at Immaculate Conception.
DAN CASHEL
Assistant AD/Compliance Coordinator
A member of the athletic department
since 1978, Dan Cashel began his affiliation
with Drury in the fall of 1974 as
a member of the college’s admission’s
staff. A native of Springfield, he graduated
from Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., in 1974.
Since the fall of 1978, Cashel has handled numerous positions
in the athletic department, including its intramural director and
men’s tennis coach. He was Director of Sports Information
from 1978-2005, and his sports publications won 30 national
awards. As senior assistant athletic director, he handles a variety
of tasks, in addition to his role as Drury’s NCAA compliance
coordinator. Dan and wife Marti have one daughter, Malorie.
COACHING STAFF

MARK STRATTON
Head Coach
BYRON HAGLER
Assistant Coach
Drury Panther Baseball 2008
In his first season as the Panthers head baseball coach and Drury’s
first intercollegiate season since 1974, Stratton led the Panthers to a
33-24 overall record and a Great Lakes Valley Conference post-season
tournament championship. The Panthers advanced to the NCAA Division
II North Central Regional, where sixth-seeded Drury posted a 2-2
mark before being eliminated as one of the final 24 teams still playing
in the country.
Stratton is a 1977 graduate of Southwest Missouri State University
who received his masters from the University of Missouri-Columbia in
1981. He began his coaching career as an assistant to Don Provance at
Glendale in 1982, and held that position until he replaced the retiring
Provance in 1993. In 13 seasons as the Glendale
High School Falcons’ head coach, Stratton’s
teams amassed a record of 244-154 and won four
district and three Ozark Conference titles.
In all, he sent 30 Falcons on to college scholarships.
Stratton also coached the Glendale Merchants
American Legion baseball squad from
1988-2002, compiling a 421-243 mark and winning
a state championship in 1997. Stratton and
wife Gay have been married for 33 years and
have four children – sons Brian, Kevin and Chip
and daughter Sara, a former Lady Panthers’ basketball player – as well
as two grandchildren.
A longtime area prep coaching standout Byron Hagler enters his second
season as the Panthers assistant coach in charge of pitching. With his
pitching staff compiling a 3.97 earned run average, Hagler helped DU to
a 33-24 record, a GLVC title and a trip to the NCAA-II national tournament
in their inaugural 2007 campaign. Hagler, 55, has coached for 28
seasons in the Ozarks, including the past 12 at Springfield’s Hillcrest
High School, where his final Hornets’ team finished 21-5 this spring and
fourth in the state in Class 4.
He also spent 15 years at Licking High School and one at Climax
Springs. Hagler’s overall record of 571-188 includes the most victories
in Missouri prep baseball coaching history. He was 223-94 at Hillcrest,
which included seven Ozark Conference championships and four district
titles, and 348-94 at Licking, where his Wildcats captured 13 district
titles and two state championships. Hagler and Stratton formed a coaching
bond by squaring off for 11 seasons when the latter was at Glendale
High School before retiring from that post last fall to prepare for Drury’s
first intercollegiate baseball team since the early 1970s. Hagler and wife
Dana have one child – son Lance – and two grandchildren.
Graduate Assistant Coach Scott Nasby
Scott Nasby enters his second season as the graduate assistant coach
at Drury, where he is pursuing his Masters in Business Administration.
He is a graduate of Missouri State in 2005 where he obtained
his degree in Marketing and earned a letter in all four seasons for
the Bears. Nasby started at every infield position besides pitcher and
started in the 2003 College World Series at first base. Nasby is also
a graduate of Glendale High School here in Springfield where Mark
Stratton coached him for 3 years. Nasby has coached in Italy’s professional
league, where his squad compiled a winning season in one of
the country’s top leagues.
Volunteer Assistant Coach Curt Plotner
Curt Plotner enters his second season as the volunteer assistant coach
where he works mainly with the infielders and baserunners. He is a
graduate of Hillcrest High School where he played for current DU
assistant coach Byron Hagler. Curt graduated from William Jewell
College in 2004 while earning a degree in accounting. He was named
to the Heart of America Athletic Conference first-team in 2002, as
well as collecting all-region honors. His team set a school record for
victories in his senior season with 47, losing in the super-regional one
win shy of the NAIA World Series. Curt is currently working on his
Masters in Education. He is getting married in June to current DU
women’s basketball graduate assistant Amanda Newton.
Volunteer Assistant Coach Chuck Essary
A native of Springfield, Charlie “Chuck” Essary, has spent many years
involved in baseball. Chuck has spent the last 22 years volunteering
his time at his alma mater, Hillcrest High School, and other area
high schools. It was through this that he developed ties to Coaches
Stratton and Hagler. Both of Essary’s sons played collegiate baseball
at Labette Community College, and Chuck began working with
the baseball program there in 1989 continuing to 2000. He was
instrumental in recruiting nearly 100 players to the Labette program
in 11 seasons. He also worked as an associate scout for the Texas
Ranger organization during that time, and played a role in drafting
several Ozark area ball players to the minor league organization.
Chuck characterizes his volunteer efforts as “teaching,” with the goal
of helping the players continue in their education and rise to the next
level of their baseball career.

To label the Drury Panthers’ 2007 season – their
first intercollegiate competition in more than three
decades – as a storybook finish might still not do
it justice.
Consider: The Panthers had just two seniors on a
squad chocked full of some 23 freshmen. They’d
never taken the field together before. They were
about to begin competition in a Great Lakes Valley
Conference noted for its competitive baseball
squads, and as a result, were picked for last (14th)
when the coaches got together and formed their
preseason poll.
But those other league coaches, while assuming
Drury had talent, also greatly underestimated the
competitive fire of this bunch of Panthers. They
apparently were unaware that, when kids come
from decorated prep programs like Hillcrest, Republic,
Glendale, Kickapoo, Lee’s Summit, etc.,
they learned how to win a lot more often than they
did to lose.
And it showed in the final results for Coach Mark
Stratton’s Panthers, who fashioned a 33-24 overall
mark and a 22-14 record in GLVC play (good for
third place in the regular season), saving some of
their best efforts for the league’s top dogs – chiefly,
a double-header sweep of eventual NCAA-II World
Series qualifier Southern Indiana on May 5 before
a large, appreciative home crowd at Meador Park.
That regular season success, in itself, would have
been enough to label this inaugural season a
smashing hit … but the Panthers had much more
in store.
They journeyed to Sauget, Ill,
for the six-team GLVC Tournament
as the No. 3 seed, and
by the time the weekend was
finished, the Panthers had
swept through the field for a
4-0 mark and were hoisting
the GLVC trophy to the delight
of their giddy fans.
And when DU fans start recollecting
the memories from
that first effort, several will
undoubtedly stick out.
*The gutty nine innings junior lefty Ricky Meinhold
turned in, locked in a pitcher’s duel with Bellarmine,
before freshman Harrison Waters ended the classic
contest with a walk-off, solo homer in the bottom of
the 10th. By the way, Waters’ first ball out of the park
all season.
*Junior Justin Skinner’s two-out, two-run double in
the bottom of the ninth to lift DU to a 5-4 victory
over SIU Edwardsville to knock the league’s regular
season champ out of the tournament.
*And, in the topper of them all, Skinner’s dramatics
in the title game vs. Bellarmine (again). Trying
to protect a 2-1 lead in the ninth, he trotted in from
his second base position, took the mound in his dual
role as closer with Knights at second and third and
nobody out, and amazingly, struck out three straight
BU hitters to touch off a celebration
that lasted for hours.
That meant the Panthers were
off to Akron, Ohio, recipients
of the automatic bid to the
NCAA-II North Central Regional
and immediately dubbed
the sixth-seed in a six-team
tournament. All Drury did was
come out and have top-seed –
and national power – Grand
Valley State down 4-1 after
scoring three times in the top

of the tenth before the Lakers rallied with four runs in
the bottom of the frame for a 5-4 victory.
Instead of being crushed, the Panthers bounced back
to beat No. 2 seed Ashland 10-5 and No. 3 seed Saginaw
Valley State 12-5, knocking both Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference squads out of the regional.
Drury fell to Grand Valley State 11-3 to finish
2-2 in the regional and reap additional benefits – senior
first baseman Tony Lewis and freshman shortstop
Joe Rohlfing were named to the All-Region squad.
Lewis was also named a Rawlings Gold Glove recipient
and a First Team All-GLVC selection, while Rohlfing
picked up GLVC Freshman of the Year honors as
well as Second Team All-GLVC accolades for his
work at short.
The rest of the Panthers? A season to remember for
the rest of their lives was a fitting parting gift … just
enough to make a young team hungry for more in
2008.
Drury Panther Baseball 2008
So ... after an inaugural baseball season in which
they won 33 games, captured a Great Lakes Valley
Conference championship despite being picked for
last in the preseason and even made the NCAA-II
Tournament, what do the Drury Panthers do for an
encore?
It’s really quite simple, says coach Mark Stratton.
More of the same ... and then some.
“Last time I checked, we didn’t get to the College
World Series last year,” Stratton said. “Our goal
is to qualify for the conference tournament, and
when we get there, to try to get into the NCAA
Tournament. That’s not any different this year.”
Drury, which opens the season Friday against
Arkansas Tech in Russellville, Ark., returns all but
two players - the graduated pair of first baseman
Tony Lewis and reserve outfielder Michael York -
from last season’s 33-24 finisher in the program’s
first season of intercollegiate play in more than
three decades.
That includes a pitching staff that truly rose to the
challenge down the stretch and carried the Panthers
first into the GLVC Tournament field in Sauget,
Ill., then to a most unlikely league championship
when DU beat Bellarmine 2-1 in the title game to
earn the automatic NCAA-II bid.
The staff, guided by pitching coach Byron Hagler,
is headed by senior left-hander Ricky Meinhold,
who went 7-3 with a 3.54 earned run average
last season but came up especially big late in the
season, finishing off his junior campaign with a
streak of 32 consecutive innings without allowing
an earned run. Included
were outstanding starts
in his final three outings
against Southern Indiana,
Bellarmine and Grand
Valley State in which he
allowed a total of two runs
(both unearned), struck out
17 and walked seven against
three of the top progams in
the region.
Meinhold is backed by senior
right-hander Blake Evans (7-3, team-low 2.37
ERA) and sophomore lefty Harrison Waters (6-3,
3.10), who is also one of the nation’s top defensive
centerfielders when he’s not on the mound.
“You know you’re going to get all Ricky has every
time he goes out there ... that’s the way Ricky
SEASON PREVIEW
PANTHERS BACK FOR MORE AFTER HISTORIC FIRST SEASON
is,” Stratton said. “I
don’t look for that
to change. Blake had
about the same ERA
as Ricky, and it’s his
senior year as well,
so I look for him to
get out and compete
just like he always
does. And Harry
(Waters) is just Harry
... I don’t anticipate
him hitting this year
when he’s pitching,
so he can just work
on pitching on those
days, and that will be
a plus for us.” Likely completing the rotation are the
likes of sophomore right-handers Chris Marston (1-3,
4.19), who has bounced back from an elbow injury at
the midway point of last season, and Blake Wixson
(1-3, 4.81) and sophomore Stephen Bloss ( 2-0, 3.86
ERA). Highly-touted freshman Ryan Anderson from
Venice, Fla., could also get a rotation look at some
point this season.
The bullpen is solid as well, anchored by the return
of sophomore set-up man Sam Pirtle - one of the
GLVC’s top firemen last year with his 4-2 record,
2.29 ERA and six saves - as well as senior closer
Justin Skinner (2-4, 4.91, seven saves), who capped
DU’s memorable GLVC Tournament title game
victory over Bellarmine by striking out three straight
Knights in a 2-1 victory after entering the game with
runners at second and third and no one out in the
ninth.
“Pirtle and Skinner both have the great temperament
for closers ... you don’t know if they are ahead or
behind,” Stratton said. “Those kids give it all they’ve
got, and both can reset the pump as quick as anybody
I’ve seen. Normally we bring Skinner in as the last
option, but we’re fine with bringing Sam in to close
as well. As long as we’re winning, that’s what those
two kids are all about. We’re fortunate to have two
kids that have that skill level and that attitude ... it
rubs off on everybody else.”
Sophomores Beau Beattie, Blake Setzer and Carl
Teghtmyer join freshmen Corey Peterson, Josh Hall,
Dan Baner and Justin Wright to provide bullpen
depth for the Panthers.
The everyday lineup for Drury returns virtually

Drury Panther Baseball 2008
intact from a squad that batted .289 as a team (second
in the GLVC) last season, especially up the middle.
Sophomore catcher Tyler Wright (.293, 27 RBIs),
second baseman Skinner (.282, 42 RBIs), sophomore
shortstop Joe Rohlfing - the GLVC’s Freshman of the
Year and an All-Region choice after hitting .330 with
22 RBIs and 10 stolen bases - and Waters (.269, 29
RBIs) give Stratton and his staff a solid base.
Rohlfing, in particular, has drawn much acclaim after
just one season, and was named a “Player To Watch”
in the North Central Region by Collegiate Baseball
Magazine. He scored a team-high 43 runs and struck
out just 16 times in 227 at-bats while playing every
inning of all 57 games.
“There’s a reason we call him ‘Joe Baseball,’ “ Stratton
says. “You know what you’re going to get from Joe
every time he runs out on that field.”
Also returning are sophomore third baseman Tyler
Goss (.292, 39 RBIs), sophomore left-fielder Jason
Hall (.312, 16 RBIs) and sophomore outfielders John
Tollenaar (.258, 3 HRs, 14 RBIs), Ben York and Dane
Hughes (.271, 12 RBIs), who earned part-time starts
last season. Sophomore Aaron
Burcham could also figure into
the mix.
“We’ve got more flexibility
not only in the lineup, but the
whole team,” Stratton said.
“No question, we’ll have great
competition for jobs all season.
We’re two-deep at every infield
position and well-stocked in
the outfield as well.”
Infield depth is provided by
sophomore Brett Gallion and freshmen Evan Jones
and Joel Potts, while freshman R.J. Knese will see
time at catcher and in the outfield for the Panthers.
Junior college transfer Tino Robbins, who hit .398
with 41 RBIs and 12 steals at Independence (Kan.)
Community College last season, is expected to see
plenty of time in right field as well as leading off in
the batting order for DU. Robbins, too, was cited
by Collegiate Baseball as a regional “Newcomer To
Watch.”
“Tino’s going to be a unique leadoff man, I can tell you
that,” Stratton said. “He’s very athletic and really has
a baseball mentality. He’s an exceptional baserunner
and he’s got a little pop. He’ll be a real asset for us at
the top of the order.”
Attempting to fill the big shoes at first base of Lewis,
the team Most Valuable Player and an All-Region
selection after batting .367 with 36 RBIs, will be senior
Mike Tettamble and newcomer Daniel Mullis, who
hit .373 with 39 RBIs at Three Rivers Community
College last season.
Improving upon last season’s 33 victories will be an
extreme challenge for the Panthers when you consider
how much they’ve beefed up the schedule in their
second season. Among the regular season additions
to the slate are perennial national powerhouses Grand
Valley State, which will visit Springfield for a March
5 double-header, and Central
Missouri, which will face
DU on April 15 at Hammons
Field, in addition to its own
tournament in early March.
“The one thing I learned last
year that if you don’t win the
league tournament, you’re
not in it unless your schedule
helps you get in,” Stratton said.
“We needed to beef it up as far
as strength of schedule in our non-conference, and
we’ve done that. We’re playing eight teams that were
in the top six of their respective regions at the end
last May ... it may be too much, too soon, but we’ll
find out. If we want to play at that level, we need to
show we can.”
The GLVC has switched its regular season play
format to divisional play, with the Panthers preseason
picks to finish third in the West behind Southern
Indiana - a College World Series qualifier last
season despite finishing second in the league during
the regular season - and perennial power Southern
Illinois University Edwardsville, which is in its last
season as a D-II member before making the jump to
Division I.
The conference season will consist of 32 games,
include 24 within the division; Drury finished 22-14
in league play last season, good for a third-place
finish during the regular season. This season, the top
two finishers in each division, plus the next two best
teams, will qualify for the league tourney.
And, in addition to a tougher schedule, there’s another
unknown - the GLVC’s move away from wood bats
for league play to a return to aluminum, which could
mean an extreme challenge for the DU pitching staff
in the cozy confines of Meador Park.
“I think it’s going to be a challenge for everybody’s
pitching staff, playing at Meador with metal,” Stratton
said. “We’ve already found out where we played last
year, we’ve backed up 15 feet. We hit three balls out
of the park in the first hour and a half practice we
had at Meador this year. It makes everybody at least
a doubles hitter. But hey, that’s the rules. That’s the
way we’ll play.”
As the first institution of higher education in
southwestern Missouri, Drury holds a unique place
in the Springfield community. Beginning with its
founding in 1873 by a group of Congregationalists,
Drury has welcomed a diverse student body, offering
unusual opportunity for its time to women and
American Indians. Anyone up to the challenge, the
founders seemed to say, should be able to partake of
intellectual nourishment.
As the 20th century progressed, so
did Drury. In addition to extending its reach and
reputation as a liberal arts college, Drury became the
first in the region to offer courses tailored for working
professionals. In the 1990s, Drury recognized the
need for students to be able to spot economic and
cultural trends on a global scale; a new curriculum,
Global Perspectives 21, accomplishes that goal. With
the School of Education and Child Development,
Mission stateMent
Drury is an independent university, churchrelated,
grounded in the liberal arts tradition
and committed to personalized education in a
community of scholars who value the arts of
teaching and learning.
Education at Drury seeks…
• to cultivate spiritual sensibilities and
imaginative faculties as well as ethical
insight and critical thought
• to liberate persons to participate responsibly in
and contribute to life in a global community
• to foster the integration of theoretical and
34 practical knowledge.
DRURY UNIVERSITY:
EDUCATING LEADERS FOR COMMUNITIES NEAR AND FAR
Breech School of Business Administration and
Hammons School of Architecture, Drury moved
into a class known as the “New American College,”
where profession-oriented education is layered over
a strong liberal arts foundation.
Drury is divided into two main divisions:
Drury College, which serves 1,600 traditional fulltime
undergraduates, and the College of Graduate
and Continuing Studies (CGCS), which offers
classes to more than 3,000 adult professional, nontraditional
and part-time students in 25 majors and
five master’s programs. CGCS offers classes in
Springfield, online and at seven satellite campuses in
central and southwestern Missouri.
Among the majors and programs offered
in Drury College, science, pre-medical and prehealth-science
programs are among the most popular.
Partnerships with the University of Missouri-
Columbia, St. Louis University and the Kirksville
College of Osteopathic Medicine help exceptional
students gain early admission to medical, osteopathic
and law schools. Engineering and occupational
therapy students can earn two degrees through a fiveyear
program with Drury and Washington University
in St. Louis.
Drury’s exceptional resources are
dedicated to a single purpose: educating bright
students who will become the next generation of
leaders. From its oldest alumnus to the newest
graduates, this service to community is a vital part of
Drury University.
Goals & objectives
Adopted by the faculty and board of trustees, Spring 1989
The goal of the Drury University Athletic Department is to provide student-athletes an opportunity to
compete in an intercollegiate athletic program that is an integral part of their educational experiences and
in consonance with Drury’s Mission Statement.
• Operate a program that maintains the highest integrity and standards of conduct.
• Produce winning teams that are competitive on a national level.
• Prepare individuals for the competitive and stressful aspects of life.
• Instill positive attitudes for goal setting and achievement within each athlete.
• Maintain strong public relations through the sports information office and booster clubs.
• Maintain a safe, healthy, drug-free athletic program.
• Provide opportunities for as many students as possible.
• Promote good sportsmanship by all members of the Drury community.
• Maintain high graduation rates for all athletic programs.

MEADOR PARK AND THE DRURY BASEBALL FACILITIES
The Drury baseball program has benefited greatly
in their startup program from the help of several
area businesses in providing donations of goods and
services to help give the Panthers top-notch facilities
in which to hone their games.
Chief among those has been the complete
transformation of the venerable Meador Park in
south Springfield into the quality home of the Drury
Panthers.
Built in 1964, what was once the home of the NCAA
Division I Missouri State Bears has sat relatively
dormant in the 21st century, but has undergone an
extreme makeover in becoming the new park for the
new DU baseball program.
“Meador Park used to be the jewel for people to
play on,” said Stratton, who played on the field as
a Hillcrest High School Hornet in the early 1970s
and coached there while at Glendale for nearly 20
years afterward.
“We’re in the process of getting it back to that status,
and we’ve already come a long way.”
Without question, that mission was in part
accomplished by a late-season stamp of approval
from the Missouri State High School Activities
Association. Needing a place to host its state baseball
championships in a pinch with the University of
Missouri’s field in Columbia in use for an NCAA
regional last June, MSHSAA turned its attention to
Springfield and Meador Park.
Despite a brief tussle with heavy rains, and thanks
to the immaculate work of the Drury coaching
staff/grounds crew, the state championships went
on without a hitch – so much so, that MSHSAA
recently announced a new four-year agreement to
continue to play the state’s pinnacle prep events at
Drury’s home ballpark.
The dimensions of Meador remain the same –
approximately 350 feet down the lines, 365 feet in
the power alleys and 380 to dead center – but the
list of improvements is numerous. They include a
resurfaced infield, an in-ground irrigation system, the
installation of protective nylon netting throughout, a
beautiful, all-brick backstop, a new paint job for the
entire facility, a new high-tech scoreboard and public
address system and the addition of 155 chair-back
seats behind home plate, among other upgrades.
On campus, Stratton and his staff – again with the
help of several local donors – have turned what once
was the Tindle Mills farm supply building on the
southeast edge of campus into an indoor training
facility complete with a synthetic rubber floor in
the 6,400-square foot training, weights and locker
area, an artificial turf surface in the 7,500 square
foot practice area, locker rooms and offices for both
the baseball and DU softball programs, three batting
cages, three pro pitching mounds and approximately
$40,000 worth of weights and training equipment.
Altogether, the facilities are viewed as a key
component in the building of a winning tradition
with the return of Drury baseball.
