“Kalahari King wants good ground and the Arkle is his long-term target” jumps well. He’ll go straight over hurdles and McCoy (who rode him in a bumper at Ayr) said to start over two miles. He’s a big, big, big horse and a chaser in time. I wouldn’t run him on fast ground, he wants to get his toe in. Blackpool Billy He’ll go novice chasing when soft ground and a trip will be ideal for him. He’s done plenty of schooling and jumps well. He’s a nice horse. Kalahari King Goes novice chasing and we’ll start him off over two miles and see where we go from there. Might start off somewhere like Ayr or Haydock, one of those tracks. He wants good ground and the Arkle would be the target. L’Antartique We’ll start him back around Christmas time I would think and then we’d be looking at the Ryanair Chase again as the end of season target. We may try him over further again, we ran him over three in the Leopardstown race (Lexus Chase) and maybe that was the wrong thing to do at the time. He should be alright over three miles, but whether he would be alright over three at the top level is another thing. Master Builder He’s going to go novice chasing, three miles on soft ground and tough tracks will suit him. He won on good ground (over hurdles), but I think he’ll come in to his own on soft ground. Naiad Du Misselot Novice chasing, plenty of options with him and the Jewson at the Festival maybe, races like that. We tried three miles early last season and maybe it was the wrong time to do it, better off trying a trip later in the season and he would have needed the run a bit, but he did stop quick at two-and-ahalf so that would worry you a little bit. That’s why we stepped back then and didn’t push him. He’s best fresh and we may start off somewhere like Haydock, Ayr, those types of tracks. Noir Et Vert He wants fast ground, better the ground the better and he’ll start in a three-and-a-quarter mile chase at Cheltenham. We’ll get on earlier with him this year than what we have done. I was saving him for the Scottish National last season and the owners wanted to run at Cheltenham. He had a hard race at Cheltenham when he wasn’t ready for it. He jumps fantastic and I think in time he will be grand. Aces Four Pakineo Des Pictons He could be anything and he’ll go straight over hurdles now. There was no point killing him last year (only had one run) and we wouldn’t be running him on firm ground, none of the horses here are really firm ground horses, most of them want to get their toe in. We’ll probably start him off over two-anda-half miles and in time he’d probably want three miles. Poker De Sivola Going to go novice chasing and I can’t wait for him to go over fences, I think he’s a nice sort. He’s schooled well, jumps brilliant. He wants a real trip, three miles plus on any ground, makes no difference to him he handles it all. Supreme Builder Again, goes novice chasing and he’s a grand sort, tough as nails. He’ll stay a trip, ground doesn’t seem to make any difference to him, he’s run on fast ground and he’s run on soft ground, doesn’t seem to hinder him in any way. He’s just a nice horse, just taken time to grow in to himself so we took our time with him and it paid off when he won a couple of races last season. He’s just going to take time. The Duke’s Speech We concentrate on chasing with him and I think he’ll get it right. He had some really good runs in handicap hurdles, so I think he will get it right and he’ll do plenty of schooling. He would want good ground and might make up in to a nice sort. The Hollinwell I love him and think he’s going to be a top-class horse, I think he’s going to be brilliant. He’s going straight over hurdles, probably starting over two-anda-half but we’ll see at the time, it’s sometimes hard to get in to these races. I wouldn’t run him on firm ground, he’d want to get his toe in as he’s a big horse. Three Mirrors He’ll probably go for the Paddy Power, we did give him a feeler at Cheltenham over 2m5f and we felt that was OK for him. Tidal Fury Two-and-a-half-miles on soft ground, the heavier the ground the better I think for him. Won at Haydock last year and the heavier the better, flat tracks like Newbury will suit. Won £250,000 in France over hurdles and rated 130 over fences, which is a good mark. Watch My Back Got him along with Bedlam Boy and he won his bumper first time out (also won a novice hurdle). He looks a nice sort. FERDY’S FAVOURITE (trainer’s pick): “The one horse I’d pick for the season would probably Pakineo Des Pictons. I love The Hollinwell but I’m not going to kill him this year. I think Pakineo will go all the way.” FERGIE’S FAVOURITE (reporter’s pick): Though I think both Kalahari King and Naiad Du Misselot will make up in to very smart novice chasers, I have long been of the opinion that Noir Et Vert has a big prize in him and this could be his year. I have a feeling the 16 Racing Ahead
seven-year-old will end up as a Grand National horse one day, so I was pleased when Ferdy told me he definitely jumps well enough to make up in to an Aintree horse.
