A word from the Principal
Wonthaggi Human Powered Vehicle Grand Prix
We should be very proud of our senior students in the 2012 HPV
team. They demonstrated outstanding resilience, persistence
and team work on the weekend at the Wonthaggi HPV Grand
Prix. This is a two day endurance event that the students, teachers
and parents have been working on together for some time.
Well done to our amazing parents who supported and cheered
the team. Thank you to Christian Fraser (coordinator), Tina Alsop
and Tabitha O’Brien for their involvement in this program.
EDEC Sports Day
Last week, the year 4-6 students competed in various athletic
events with our friends from the local primary schools. This was
a most enjoyable day. Our students were fantastic! They tried
their best, had fun and were great sports! Congratulations to
Chloe Goodie for winning the EDEC Girls Championship.
Gembrook Market
Last Sunday the school had the sausage sizzle at Gembrook Market.
This is a terrific fundraiser and money from the markets will
contribute to some new outside seating for the students. Thank
you to Ellisa and Tracy our two fabulous parent organisers.
Thank you also to the team of parents and teachers who assisted
on the day.
School Council 2012
The Annual Report to the Community for 2011 and the Annual
Implementation Plan for 2012 was presented to School Council
last week. The school community would like to acknowledge and
thank retiring members Jude Everett and Darren Petrie. Jude has
been on council for many years and has supported the school in
many ways. Darren has spent many years involved in school
council and contributed greatly to the development of the new
buildings in recent years. Darren has been president of the
School Council for the last two years and the school has benefited
significantly from his great leadership and .commitment.
Term 1 has certainly been very exciting for all at Gembrook Primary
School. It has been a fantastic start to the school year. In
the classrooms the focus has been on literacy and numeracy. The
preps have made a fabulous start to school and are reading and
writing already! The student leaders, Captains, House Captains,
Eco Warriors and SRC teams continue to be outstanding in their
different roles around the school. Our school captains, Chloe and
Joel, are truly wonderful at assembly, at school events and being
a great example around the school. There have been some outstanding
personal achievements throughout the term by students
and some of these were awarded with certificates at the
weekly assemblies. Congratulations to all students. We are very
proud of you. During the term there were many extra- curricula
activities including:
HPV Wonthaggi Challenge
Under the Big Top – school production
Family Picnic
House Swimming Sports
House Athletic sports
EDEC Sports Days
Prep Family Night
Excel Music program
Whole school excursion on Puffing Billy
Lunchtime activities
Produce Markets
Prep Breaky
Buddy Bear Day
Next term promises to be just as exciting. The teachers have
been working together planning a fabulous array of learning
challenges and activities for next term. Next term we will begin
our Jellybeanz Music program. This program is a weekly instrumental
music program for all students.
The eco warriors team led by Karen, will once again have a produce
market. Our eco warriors will be selling produce from the
market as well as other donated produce. If you would like to
assist Karen and Ellisa with these markets please contact Karen
or me. This is a wonderful real life learning experience. Money
from the market is used to purchase materials for the vegetable
garden. The Middle Learning Centre will be planting autumn
seedlings tomorrow.
This Friday is an out of uniform day and students are asked to
bring along a gold coin donation. This money will go towards
supporting our school’s World Vision child.
Puffing Billy
We had a whole school excursion on Puffing Billy on Monday.
Students, teachers and parents had a wonderful day together,
culminating with a picnic at Emerald Lake Park.
Dismissal time will be 2:30pm on Friday March 30 and school
will resume on Monday April 16.
I wish everyone a safe and restful holiday.
Ride to School Day
Well done to our students and parents who rode to school on Friday.
We were impressed with the great participation for this event.
Great effort to everyone!
JLC Breakfast
The JLC students had breakfast at school on Thursday. They enjoyed
preparing and serving their food and we were impressed with the amount of
food they ate! It was a great morning.

I READING
Help your child develop a love for reading with our
reading tip of the week:
Talk to your child about how you choose
books for your own reading. Encourage them
to share their thoughts about the things
they are reading and look for things that
might encourage further insight, such as
reading other books by the same author,
or watching a movie based on the book together
and discussing the differences.
